Earlier today, I got a phone call from my credit card company about some irregular charges on my account. It turned out that there were two charges that I had not authorized, to parties of which I had never heard. I have closed the account, but the puzzle is, who got hold of my account information, and by what means? I use the account in question exclusively for purchases on the Web: the card itself never leaves the house, and I do not use it for purchases over the telephone. Further, the vast majority of my on-line purchases are at a few highly reputable sites such as Amazon.com. The only exception to this in my recent history is that in May, I subscribed for one month to the file-storage service Oron.com in order to download a lot of movie files. Even though I looked through the terms carefully before subscribing to ascertain that there was no automatic renewal, I got notice a few weeks later that my account was about to be charged for another month anyway. I succeeded in preventing that charge, but it seemed to me that a site that operates largely for the transmission of porn and that uses sharp practices like automatic renewal is the likeliest suspect in this caper.
So I just wonder if there are others out there who have paid for premium membership at Oron.com and, if so, if any of them have experienced unauthorized transactions on the charge account that they used.
