I have a funny feeling the Ulster Freedom fighters have a shitload to say on this issue. The phrase "Prepared for Peace, Ready for War" kinda gives me the impression that they aren't exactly OK with said British settlers being there. I watched Some Mother's Son the other night again, and granted it has always had an effect on my viewing of the conflict, the British treatment of Irish prisoners was absolutely deplorable even in modern times.

Britain made their own mess with this one when they decided to intervene in an age old conflict of interest between Catholics and Protestants. In my opinion, the first thing which needs to be done is the complete reconfiguration of the "Orangemen". They have been completely dominated by protestants for too long, and granted over the past 10 years things had started to improve, the IRA was killing Catholics who attempted to join (one of my ancestors who is Scouse, but was a Catholic due to his ancient Irish roots was one of em) up until around 20 years ago. You need a cooperative force of protestant and catholic policemen first an foremost. This police unit should only be loyal to Northern Irish parliament, and have nothing to do with Westminster.

It takes a lot to end a conflict, this we all know. Keep in mind however, Israel pulled their settlers out of their homes in Gaza, it's perfectly within reason to have Britain do the same if need be..

Since this thread has been revived, I'd like to bring up the NI situation again, considering the IRA has for the most part disarmed.

Anyone else have an opinion on the Ulster mess?

In the event of war....let's say the French (improbably of course) decided to invade the Islands the British Government would be entirely responsible for their protection.......you could say the Islanders want to have their cake and eat it....independent in peace...reliant in the event of war. Hence the term 'Dependancy' applies.....and good for them...it's a lovely part of the world.

History shows all too clearly that the German Third Reich indeed invaded and occupied the Channel Islands during World War Two, forcing numerous islanders into slave labor and concentration camps in other German-Occupied Territories in mainland Europe from 1940 until 1945.

This is true as in much of Europe..indeed I lost 3 Great Uncles, one who lost his life soon after liberating Guernsey or Jersey (according to my Father he drowned)....and another great uncle Harry actually told us horrific stories of what he witnessed whilst liberating Belsen, truly truly horrific...maybe the whole Nazi concentration camp internments warrants another thread.....dark stuff though. (Of the five brothers...my grandad and great-uncles...only 2 came back.)

Just to agree that it's a mess; a very very very old mess. Given the situation is (or appears from the outside) better than it was I have to hope that it will not remain a mess forever.

This may come as a shock and a surprise, but more Americans care about the Royals than Brits.

If she likes the US so much, mind if you keep her?
Maybe she just thinks that it's a nice place to visit.

If she wants to stay, we can put her in a nice glass case in the Smithsonian (which was founded with money from England, so it's only fair).

Then she might say, "Look at mah face! Do I look bovvered?"

Am I the only one who thinks Catherine Tate is funny?

HRM certainly looked peeved at the delay in disembarcation, if the photo in the paper I saw was anything to go by.

As for Catherine Tate, while she's kind of funny in an 'in your face' way for the most part I prefer my humour a little more dry, subtle and sophisticated. I've never been a fan of mainstream humour I just don't find it 'humorous'.

I do like Monty Python though which to contradict my statement above is very 'much in your face' but then there's always exceptions and sometimes a good old fashioned belly laugh is just what the doctor ordered.:biggrin1:
