In the Greek instance, from which the Roman practise derived, it was as much a question of status as dick size as DMWhopper was pointing out.

The dick size thing only really applied to people of otherwise, relatively equal status, who subdivided into a few givers and alot of takers. Exactly. In the case of Greek pedagogy, the epheboi were upper-class youths and the pedagogues were slaves. Well-respected slaves, to be sure, since they were educated, but slaves nonetheless. A slave would not be permitted to sodomize a free citizen, nor would a youth be allowed to sodomize an adult. Such couplings were not deemed proper, and they would not be tolerated.

you gotta remember that ancient greece was really two countries rather than one. in the athenian-dominated north, slavery of non-greeks was accepted, although it was not permitted for citizens to themselves engage in slave-trading. the spartans, on the other hand, were happy enough to enslave anybody if it suited them - what were the helots, if not slaves? an entire population of fellow-greek, hereditary slaves, come to that, who outnumbered their spartan masters many times over, and upon whom the entire economy of sparta was grounded. granted, there weren't the legally-defined, set-in-stone defintions of "slave" and "slavery" that the romans formalized, but in practical terms there was no difference.

It wasn't considered abuse by the classical Greeks. And when you get right down to it, it was less sexual than commonly thought. Penetration of an ephebos by his pedagogue was strictly forbidden, and vice-versa. There are records of pedagogues being executed for violating that taboo.
