Since first posting this I remembered I came across a write-up else where, where another reason they stopped showering was gym coaches were so afraid of being accused of being pedophiles that the thought of having a locker room full of underage boys fully nude didn't sit too well with them.

Only six percent of schools in the US public schools offer daily physical education classes. The problem is money so many of the schools have developed programs that offer physical activity that do not require a shower.
To start a phys ed program costs a school approximately $500,000. And increasingly, schools just don't have that kind of money to spare in this economy.
In terms of your other point schools who do offer a physical education program an adult is never alone with a student in a locker room or shower area.

That's bullshit. Kids aren't showering today but it's not because some preacher says it's sinful. I think the showers are dry for the same reason there are individual urinals with dividers between them-nobody wants to be seen naked. It never was a big deal-shouldn't be now. In the 70's it was everybody in the shower & be quick about it. If you didn't have soap or shampoo you borrowed some. You'd catch hell from the coach or your buddies if you reeked or let your practice stuff get too ripe. Sad to hear guys have gone to rubbing around a big Wet One...

As Clancy Wiggum once said, "Stop in the name of American squeamishness!"

I went to school in upstate NY and we never had to shower after gym class. There isn't time for it. Classes are generally 45(ish) minutes long, it takes at least 10 minutes to get the class started (including attendance and getting to the correct field or court), then we would "play" for about 30 minutes and the last 5 minutes were spent changing back into our regular clothes. We were often late to the next class. I thought that it was a nation wide trend, not just in upstate NY. The times they are a-changing.

This is exactly how it was for me at a school in Northwest New Jersey. People rarely if ever used the shower after phys ed. I've only been in a group shower situation after athletic events a handful of times.

Sigh. This saddens me immeasurably. Showering with the guys is a confirmation of progress to manhood, and as our culture is sadly ritual-free in terms of puberty passages ( and everything else), it's too bad this cultural milestone has fallen by the wayside.
I loved showering with the guys in hs and college. I love it now at my gym, even tho' it's individual stalls, so the closest I get is the steam room, where I often jack off with the other men.

It's telling how you talk of male bonding but then cap it off by the sexual context, which I think is precisely why there is less group shower situations in society today - because they've been overly sexualized and straight guys just don't want that.

I grew up playing team sports and showered after PE. I shower after the gym now if I'm going out afterward or going to work. I don't get a thrill by showering with other guys, nor do I think it's any big deal. I don't use the gym, a place to exercise, as a place to work out my sexual fantasies. I think if people weren't so insistent on making it something it isn't it wouldn't have created the fear that evolved into the situation we have now.
