As long as we're tossing around terms like 'unpalatable truths' I thought some of the more intellectually adenturesome might be willing to give this a shot.
I assume that those of you whose mind is made up and the book is closed on this subject will quit about a third or less of the way through. But I'm posting it anyway on the outside chance that it will (at the very least) provide someone with a bit of mental exercise.

Shelby, you will be surprised to learn that I completely support black conservatives. It is their choice in how they choose to combat their situation, and I wholly believe that there will be many more to join their ranks as time goes on. At this moment in time, I would call these people exceptions to the rule, but the rule is changing.
Much of this change has come about BECAUSE of affirmative action, but it has happened nonetheless. That we will not (or should not) need the crutch that affirmative action provides is my dearest wish. I am just not at the place yet where I am able to trust my fellow Americans enough to do the right things on their own. Not yet. Still, one can't help but admire those who are able to stand out and say "Disadvantaged or not, I will not be held back!"
I feel this way for myself as well, I guess I could be called a conservative of sorts in my own right. The difference in mainly that I also support the rights of those who are not strong enough (yet) to do this, until a time of a little more balance comes. If we truly think of minorities as equal, then we must make allowances for there to be exceptional ones, along with a majority of average ones. That's what average means!
I dislike standing up for mediocrity, but let's be honest- the vast majority of people are and always will be average, and there's no shame in that. I do appreciate the posted article, it is indeed food for thought.
