He's insulting a black female (rumored to be homosexual - a rumor I'm not endorsing) and were me doing so (and God forbid, attacking a democrat), flaming and shit-storm would follow promptly.

Don't play victim :p. You're acting as though I didn't call him out for the statement before you said anything about it.

I agree it helps, but it is not a foolproof assertion. I knew a lot of racist when I worked with several police agencies - on both sides of the racial spectrum. I was often surprised the things some people would blurt out in person or when they thought you were "one of us."

I've seen the same but rarely. Given that it does seem to help, maybe that's part of a model for improvement overall.

I can comfortably say I'm not victimized, even (or particularly) by the flaming storms of shit. :)

Condi once called W her husband on a Sunday talk show. It was a rather famous slip that set tongues wagging, but that no one ever read anything into. It was just a memorable slip of the tongue.

I just learned one new thing here today. Had not heard that.

I've heard the stories about Condi, but a) I never cared and b) I did not take them seriously because I never heard them from any credible lesbian - and I know quite a few in DC, having lived in the area for many years. If I wanted to insult the lady I'm sure I could do better than that - it was just a reference to a long ago but famous at the time slip.

The world has to be able to look past colour and age and judge people on if they can do the job or not.

Agree entirely of course.

As a white male, I have been accused of discrimination when terminating an employee. Which is really frustrating because it is untrue - and demonstrably so since I made the hiring decision in the first place and had I been concerned about skin color, that would have been the easy time to discriminate. But even more worrisome to me is the possibility that the employee terminated actually believed that racial discrimination was at play.

See that now and stand corrected.

When people ask, "Why can't we all just get along," they seem to mean it as opposed to talking about race issues.

Doesn't make much sense to me. I believe the overwhelming majority of those who point out and challenge racism ultimately want nothing more than for us all to truly "get along."

I don't understand. Explain, maybe single-syllable words please. :)

Which word was difficult?

Perhaps I'm wrong, but in other threads I seem to recall you questioning the amount of discussion and activism about race. I took "Why can't we all just get along?" as your alternative. Maybe I misunderstood.

I think maybe I understand but not sure.

I find the name-calling on both sides distasteful and unhelpful. My thought here was to have a more civil discussion.

With an exception or two, so far so good!

"Race relations" is a made up term. As if somehow we are all seperated by some invisible monolithic membrane we must communicate through.

Then how should we refer to the at-least perceived barrier or discrimination we read so much about?

ETA: sincere question, not being PITA. At least not this time.
