The White Helmets: Risking lives to save fellow Syrians - UpFront

Syria's White Helmets are often the first to arrive after an attack in Syria.

The voluntary aid group, also known as the Syrian Civil Defence, is credited with saving tens of thousands of lives in the face of constant bombardment from all sides of the conflict.

The humanitarian group, which was awarded the Swedish Right Livelihood Award on Thursday and nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize, formed in 2013 and now consists of about 3,000 volunteers.

In a special interview, Mehdi Hasan speaks to White Helmets spokesman Farouq al-Habib about the challenges the group faces and accusations the White Helmets are biased towards rebel groups.

Reality Check: Yes, Islam is compatible with democracy - UpFront

"Muslims don't like democracy" or "Islam isn't compatible with democracy" - that's what is often spewed by some of Islam's biggest critics.

But a look at the big picture - a world where much of the Muslim population lives within democratic countries and most Muslims support democracy - proves otherwise.

In this week's Reality Check, Mehdi Hasan debunks the commonly held myth that Islam and democracy are not compatible.

WHITE HOUSE: Senate override of 9/11 bill veto 'most embarrassing thing' lawmakers have done in decades

It's "the single most embarrassing thing the United States Senate has done possibly since 1983," he told reporters after news of the Senate's 97 to 1 vote broke earlier in the day.

Earnest was answering a question about the size of the override, which was the largest margin since the Senate voted in 1983 to override a veto by former President Ronald Reagan by a 95 to 0 spread.

The override attempt now goes to the House for a vote, where it is expected to pass. If passed, the legislation becomes law.

-

There is honestly and truly no way in hell this won't backfire on america. If this does indeed pass, america can rightly kiss it's financial future goodbye. The amount of civilians killed by our military alone would open us up to an amazing amount of lawsuits. The saddest part being that this can't just be blamed on republicans. Which will only give creditability to those screaming about third parties. Even though those third parties probably would have buckled and voted for it too. Ah well this is america.

Sudan accused of using chemical weapons in Darfur

Between 200 to 250 people, many of them children, have been killed in at least 30 suspected chemical attacks in the Sudanese region of Darfur, according to a new report by global rights group Amnesty International.

Cesar Gaviria vies to get Colombia peace deal with FARC rebels passed

Supporters and opponents of Colombia's historic peace deal with FARC rebels are about to have their say on whether the agreement should be ratified.
A referendum will decide whether to accept or reject the deal signed last week to end 52 years of war.
The man in charge of getting out the YES vote is former president Cesar Gaviria, who helped hunt down the notorious drug kingpin, Pablo Escobar.
He gave an exclusive interview to Latin America editor Lucia Newman.

US elections and the media: How did we get here? - The Listening Post (Full)

Published on Sep 17, 2016

In this special edition of The Listening Post from New York City we explore how a lack of regulation and absence of a strong public broadcaster in America has impacted the coverage of US politics.

As the 2016 presidential election campaign heads into the home stretch, many Americans are accusing their news outlets, particularly on the broadcast side, of not just reporting on the race for the White House - but actually affecting the outcome, through their commercial agendas, prioritising ratings and revenues over journalism and responsible reporting.

So how did we get here? Measuring the totality of media coverage over the entire presidential campaign - the content, the tone, the ideology - is near impossible. But what we can do is examine structural issues in the broadcasting landscape that are unique to the US.

First, America's regulatory requirement for editorial fairness is almost non existent. Broadcasters in the US can be editorially and ideologically biased whether Fox News on the right, MSNBC on the left.

The second thing that sets the US media apart is that unlike every other advanced country in the world, America does not have a publicly-owned broadcaster provided with the resources - the budgets - to actually compete with privately-owned media outlets. So broadcasting in the US is almost entirely corporate-controlled.

We examine the corporate domination of the American airwaves, the ratings and profit imperative related to that and the effect that that has on media coverage and public discourse.

Talking us through the story are: Dan Rather, former anchor, CBS Evening News; Cenk Uygur, host, The Young Turks; Amy Goodman, host, Democracy Now! ; Nicholas Lemann, Dean Emeritus, Columbia Journalism School; Robert McChesney, communications professor, Illinois University; Janine Jackson, programme director, Fairness & Accuracy In Reporting; Daniel McCarthy, editor, The American Conservative; and Patricia Diaz Dennis, former federal communications commissioner.

In a move that sent a wave of shock through Latin America, Colombian voters on

\Sunday appeared headed to reject a peace deal that had been signed by their president and the largest rebel group, leaving the fate of a 52-year war suddenly uncertain.

Pakistan: Man defends killing sister in the name of honour

Killings in the name of honour in the country have increased 25 percent in the last three years

bit of a bummer, but thats the people/countrys decision
very difficult COLOMBIA/FARC
hope the loseing affected get a better deal then ..thyve tried, thats a bonus ..

Inside Story - Can peace in Colombia be saved?

It was hailed as a done deal. But when Colombia's peace agreement was put to a vote - the people said no.
With a difference of less than one percent, they rejected the deal, calling it too forgiving. 260,000 people had died during the war with FARC, which lasted more than half a century.
And critics of the peace deal want justice. President Juan Manuel Santos is vowing to continue the search for peace.
But before the referendum, he'd warned that a 'no' vote would return Colombia to war.
So, where does this leave the country?
Presenter: Hazem Sika
Guests:
Arlene Tickner, professor of international relations at Rosario University.
Gimena Sanchez, Colombia human rights advocate at the Washington Office on Latin America.
Tom Long, professor at the University of Reading and specialist on U.S.-Latin American relations.
