Thais begin year of mourning over King’s death

A royal procession carrying the body of Thailand's late King Bhumibol Adulyadej travelled on Friday from the Bangkok hospital he died in to the Grand Palace.

The king will lie there for a year as his country mourns the loss of the world’s longest reigning monarch.

Wayne Hay reports from Bangkok.

South China Sea: The world's next big war? - UpFront
The South China Sea is one of the most hotly contested and lucrative regions in the world.

In July, an international tribunal in The Hague ruled in a landmark case in favour of the Philippines, which rejected the Chinese claim to almost the entire South China Sea. China called the ruling ill-founded and non-binding.

As the row in the maritime area continues to heat up, will this lead to war? Or are claims of a possible conflagration exaggerated?

In this week's Arena, we debate the issue with Charles Liu, a senior fellow at the Peking University Centre on China and Global Affairs and the founder of Hao Capital, and Bonnie Glaser, a senior adviser for Asia and director of the China Power Project, at the Centre for Strategic and

Speaking truth to power: Journalism in a post-fact era - The Listen...

Against a never-ebbing tide of false claims stands a small but growing army of specialised fact-checking journalists and news outlets. But do they really make a difference? Are people not happier to live in worlds built out of their own facts?

Journalists are supposed to be the people standing and saying, actually, no, what you're being told is untrue; what you're being told is not the whole story.

Mihir Sharma , columnist, Business Standard

There are signs that the mainstream news media have belatedly begun to push back against Donald Trump repeatedly trampling on the facts, the debate this past week being the latest example of that. There are dozens of fact-checking outfits whose specific task is to dissect the claims made by politicians and public figures, drill deep into their past statements, statistics and raw data, and test them against reality

"Our goals are twofold. One, to hold politicians accountable for what they're saying and also to be there for voters. We really s... (more)

US elections and the media: How did we get here? - The Listening Post (Full)

Published on Sep 17, 2016
In this special edition of The Listening Post from New York City we explore how a lack of regulation and absence of a strong public broadcaster in America has impacted the coverage of US politics.

As the 2016 presidential election campaign heads into the home stretch, many Americans are accusing their news outlets, particularly on the broadcast side, of not just reporting on the race for the White House - but actually affecting the outcome, through their commercial agendas, prioritising ratings and revenues over journalism and responsible reporting.

So how did we get here? Measuring the totality of media coverage over the entire presidential campaign - the content, the tone, the ideology - is near impossible. But what we can do is examine structural issues in the broadcasting landscape that are unique to the US.

First, America's regulatory requirement for editorial fairness is almost non existent. Broadcasters in the US can be editorially and ideologically biased whether Fox News on the right, MSNBC on the left.

The second thing that sets the US media apart is that unlike every other advanced country in the world, America does not have a publicly-owned broadcaster provided with the resources - the budgets - to actually compete with privately-owned media outlets. So broadcasting in the US is almost entirely corporate-controlled.

We examine the corporate domination of the American airwaves, the ratings and profit imperative related to that and the effect that that has on media coverage and public discourse.

Talking us through the story are: Dan Rather, former anchor, CBS Evening News; Cenk Uygur, host, The Young Turks; Amy Goodman, host, Democracy Now! ; Nicholas Lemann, Dean Emeritus, Columbia Journalism School; Robert McChesney, communications professor, Illinois University; Janine Jackson, programme director, Fairness & Accuracy In Reporting; Daniel McCarthy, editor, The American Conservative; and Patricia Diaz Dennis, former federal communications commissioner.

Zipline Delivery Time Lapse – Blood Delivery to Muhororo District Hospital

Published on Oct 18, 2016
Just another routine aerial delivery of life-saving blood to Muhororo District Hospital in Rwanda!

Through a partnership with the Government of Rwanda, Zipline delivers all blood products for twenty hospitals and health centers across the country, improving access to healthcare for millions of Rwandans.

This time lapse was captured today by Zip. Zip is our small robot airplane designed for a high level of safety, using many of the same approaches as commercial airliners. It can carry vaccines, medicine, or blood. Our fleet of Zips provides for a population of millions. No roads, no problem!

The journey to get this blood to Muhororo District Hospital would have taken over three hours by car, but instead took fewer than 15 minutes by Zip.

In this video, you can see why Rwanda is commonly called the Land of a Thousand Hills. Zip transits safely above the hills, then descends for delivery in a spiraling helix. After delivery, Zip passes under a thunderhead and powers through a passing rainstorm.

At the final presidential debate, Donald Trump wouldn’t say if he will accept the election results. “I will keep you in suspense,” he said.

Donald J. Trump said on Wednesday that he might not accept the results of the presidential election if he felt it was rigged against him — a stunning statement from a major party nominee and one that Hillary Clinton called “horrifying” — in a final debate that swung wildly between civil and caustic.
• “I will look at it at the time,” Mr. Trump said of the election result. “I will keep you in suspense.”
• The debate began cordially but turned caustic. Mrs. Clinton called Mr. Trump “a puppet” of Russia, and he called her a “nasty woman.” Read more »

CATALONIA SPAIN,well done,bye bye BULLFIGHTING!

days gone bye,differnt human era,grow up/out
bugger the culture BS

Published on Oct 19, 2016
After years of lobbying by animal rights campaigners, in July 2011 the Catalan Parliament voted by a small majority to ban bullfighting. The Catalonia region of north-east Spain banned bullfighting as a spectator sport with effect from January 1, 2012.

In the evening of September 25, 2011, 20,000 spectators from Spain and around the world were packed into Barcelona's Monumental Bullring for the last bullfight in the Spanish region.

But the debate for and against is still very much alive.

In September 2016, there were demonstrations in Madrid after a matador was killed by a bull, sparking calls for a Spanish nationwide ban. Meanwhile in October, bullfighting supporters petitioned Spain's constitutional court to have the ban overturned, arguing the Catalan parliament had powers only to regulate the sport, not ban it. But the court deferred its decision.

I think anyone who wants to be a toreador loves the bull more than his girlfriend. Bullfighting is his life. That's what he wants.

Luis Cantero, bullfighter trainer

The ban polarises Catalan society and provokes strong feelings on both sides. Many are glad it's in place, feeling that bullfighting has no part in Catalan culture.

But Carlos Lopez Perez, a member of Libera!, a Spanish non-profit animal rights organisation, disagrees. "Entertainment that abuses animals no longer fits the morals of the age. The Catalan parliament took into account what the people wanted and legislated independently. We consider this activity outdated. Regardless of whether it's Spanish or Catalan, society today finds it clearly abusive. Killing an animal is incompatible with modern and civilised Catalan society."

So, like the bull, the debate rages on - with some thinking the ban has as much to do with Spanish regional politics and Catalan autonomy as it does with animal rights.

Duterte, Trump, and Implications of ‘Sticking It’ to the Rest of the World

Rodrigo Duterte has only been in office a few months in the Philippines but is giving Donald Trump a run for his money as the most bombastic and outrageous political figure on the global media stage. Just as a large percentage of Americans love Trump’s weekly offensive and absurd statements, a “huge” percentage of Filipinos love it when Duterte verbally sticks it to Obama, the UN, and even the Pope. Duterte inevitably ends up taking it all back of course (after the damage is done), but it sure feels good in the interim. Duterte’s popularity in the Philippines is an astonishing 91%. Filipinos must feel like it is they who are ‘sticking it’ to global powers, oligarchs, and the drug lords. Who wouldn’t want that feeling? Bravo

United Kingdom to pardon convicted gay men under Alan Turing law

Friday 21 Oct 2016 5:41 a.m.
Britain is to pardon thousands of gay and bisexual men convicted of crimes under sexual offence laws now abolished, following from the 2013 exoneration of celebrated World War II codebreaker Alan Turing.

Homosexual acts were not decriminalised in England until 1967 and it was not until 2001 that the age of consent for homosexuals was reduced to 16, bringing it into line with the law governing heterosexuals.

The pardon plan has been dubbed "Turing's Law" in reference to the brilliant wartime mathematician who cracked Nazi Germany's "unbreakable" Enigma code.

He was stripped of his job and chemically castrated after being convicted of gross indecency in 1952 for having sex with a man and killed himself two years later, aged 41.

After years of campaigning by supporters including physicist Stephen Hawking, Turing was granted a rare royal pardon from Queen Elizabeth in 2013.

"Alan Turing just so, so deserves this," his niece Rachel Barnes told BBC radio.

Major websites were inaccessible to people across wide swaths of the United States on Friday after a company that manages crucial parts of the internet’s infrastructure said it was under attack.
Users reported sporadic problems reaching several websites, including Twitter, Netflix, Spotify, Airbnb, Reddit, Etsy, SoundCloud and The New York Times.
Dyn, whose servers monitor and reroute internet traffic, said it began experiencing what security experts called a distributed denial-of-service attack just after 7 a.m. Reports that many sites were inaccessible started on the East Coast, but spread westward as the day wore on.

Inside Story - What does the US presidential campaign reveal about American politics?

Published on Oct 20, 2016
With the election just over two weeks away, it was a final chance to convince Americans.

The candidates for the world's most powerful political job disagreed on policy including Iraq, Russia, Syria, the economy, and immigration.

Trump said the poll is rigged and has refused to commit to accepting the election result if Clinton wins.

There were no niceties. They skipped the customary handshake and didn't hesitate to go on the attack.

So, did they convince American voters and will it make a difference on election day?

Published on Oct 22, 2016
First it was Burundi, now South Africa wants out.

It says it will withdraw from the International Criminal Court - which was set up to prosecute those accused of serious crimes against humanity.

Several African states have accused the ICC of unfairly targeting the continent. Uganda's president went so far as to call it "useless".

South Africa's decision comes a year after it was criticised for ignoring an order to arrest Sudan's President Omar al-Bashir while he was visiting the country. The ICC has issued an arrest warrant for Bashir, who's accused of committing war crimes in Sudan's Darfur region.

So, is the ICC biased against African nations?

Presenter: Martine Dennis

Australian plan to tax foreign backpackers

NZ for years had a simple 3 pc tax on all Agricultural/Orchard workers, made it attractive

dont know what our tax rate is now altho theres no furore or treatment as such of our visiting backpackers

currently NZ has been supporting agricultural workers from the Pacific Islands for similar requirements
i can imagine Australias reluctance with that, noting there very negative immigrant policies aforementioned

we will likely follow Australia as usual
they/we eventually imitate each other

Australia is/has been following a ridiculous course of penalizing foreign workers for a good 20 years or so now,and getting much worse about it ll recently ..

Row over Australian plan to tax foreign backpackers

Australia's government is being accused of targeting foreign workers with the introduction of a special tax on backpackers. Young people from around the world travel to Australia on "working holidays", where many earn money picking fruit and vegetables before travelling around the country. But farmers are concerned backpackers could stop coming if they are taxed more than locals.
