It happened in Tiananmen Square - Featured Documentary
In 1989, hundreds of thousands of people flooded onto the streets of Beijing and into Tiananmen Square demanding democracy, freedom of speech and an end to corruption.

After a seven week standoff, the government called in the troops and a bloody battle ensued.

The number of deaths is not known. The Chinese Red Cross initially issued a statement saying that 2,600 people had been killed but rapidly retracted that. The Chinese government claimed that 241 people died, including 23 soldiers.

Twenty years on, Al Jazeera speaks to some of those who took part in the world's largest and most influential pro-democracy movement.

Through their personal stories and the stories of others who witnessed this historic movement, It happened in Tiananmen Square recreates an era when a new generation of Chinese wanted to finally break from the shackles of Mao's Cultural Revolution.

It happened in Tiananmen Square aired from Sunday, May 31, 2009.

President Trump won’t block James Comey’s testimony in Congress, the White House said. The highly anticipated hearing is Thursday.
Monday, June 5, 2017 2:21 PM EDT
Mr. Trump will not invoke executive privilege to try to block Mr. Comey, the F.B.I. director he fired, from testifying before Congress this week, clearing the way for a hearing that may be the most anticipated in Washington in months if not years.
It was not clear that Mr. Trump would have succeeded in stopping Mr. Comey from testifying had he chosen to cite executive privilege. The Supreme Court has found that presidents enjoy a right to confidentiality in communications with their advisers but it is not an absolute privilege and courts have overridden such claims in the past.

WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING
Qatar was iced out by its neighbors. Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Yemen, Libya, Bahrain, and Maldives all severed ties with Qatar, accusing its government of supporting terrorism and compromising their national security. Qatari visitors and residents were given two weeks to leave the UAE, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, and the country was booted from a Saudi-led coalition fighting in Yemen. Already, Qatar is facing food shortages.

Bird-flipping welcome for US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson in New Zealand (Video)

The weather was awful and the mood of the locals wasn't much better when US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson? arrived in Wellington.

Tillerson's trip coincides with a Stuff/Massey survey of nearly 40,000 Kiwis which shows US president Donald Trump is deeply unpopular.

And Prime Minister Bill English conceded Trump's unpopularity made it more difficult for the US to exercise leadership.

"There's a lot of disagreement in New Zealand with some of the administration's policies but there's always going to be shorter term tension around politics.

"New Zealand have for a long time not liked various presidents of the US and disagreed with their views about our anti-nuke policies for 30 years. But that doesn't prevent us confirming our shared values and cooperating with them on security and defence," English said.

UK general election: Britons head to polls on Thursday

The snap election was called by Prime Minister May, who said she wanted to strengthen her mandate in negotiations with the EU.

Labour focused its campaign on domestic issues such as health and education.

But the campaign quickly switched to a debate about national security, following the attacks in Manchester and London.

Germany sounds warning on Iraqi Kurds' independence vote

Germany's foreign minister has warned that plans for a referendum on Kurdish independence could worsen tensions in Iraq.

On Wednesday leaders of the autonomous Kurdistan Regional Government announced plans to hold the vote in September.

Many Kurds in northern Iraq support the move towards an independent state. But some have their doubts about the timing.

Qatar FM: GCC Blockade violates international law

Qatar's Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani said a blockade of his country is in violation of international law.
He made the comments while on a recent trip to Germany, and in the wake of a major diplomatic rift that saw Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain and Egypt lead attempts to isolate Qatar.
The minister’s German counterpart, Sigmur Gabriel, reiterated his support for Doha by calling for increased diplomatic efforts to lift sanctions.

South Korea celebrates 30 years of democracy

This year marks 30 years of democracy in South Korea.
Violent protests in 1987 paved the way for the transition from military rule.
Earlier this year, many peaceful demonstrations led to the removal of President Park Geun-hye.
But many say democracy is still a work in progress.

So there is a "free speech rally" and a protest to said rally going on in Portland today. On the protest side, largely SJWs who believe themselves to be "fighting fascism", 14 of the protesters have been arrest for "disorderly conduct" (aka physically attacking the rally side) and carrying concealed weapons. The rally side, largely seen as Trump supporters, are just milling around. Some with flags draped around them others with signs and/or weird hats, and others are just kind of... there.

ANTIFA is there on the protest side. The "Kekistani's" are there of the rally side. Both sides agree that Sharia is bad, Nazi's are bad, and fascism is bad. Sooooo.... if they agree on these things, why is there a protest??? And why are so many of the "good and virtuous" protesters masked, armed, and attacking people?
