Migrants Say They Are Still Being Threatened With Child Separation

Migrants Say They Are Still Being Threatened With Child Separation
Even after President Trump’s executive order, customs officers use the idea of family separation to dissuade prospective asylum-seekers from pursuing protection.

We Must Not Forget Detained Migrant Children

One of the most distressing aspects of immigration detention is how invisible the detained can become, even when they’re imprisoned in our proverbial back yards.

When will the US government reunite separated families
? | The Stream

Reunited families?
One week after US President Donald Trump signed an Executive Order stopping the separation of families due to his administration’s ‘zero-tolerance’ immigration policy we’ll revisit stories from the detention centres as efforts to reunite more than 2,000 children with their parents are underway. It’s been a week of chaos as the various agencies coordinating immigrant enforcement and detention try to get families back together. This week Trump called for immediate deportation without due process, and there has been confusion about choices parents have in seeking asylum or getting deported.

We’ll look at the challenges of reuniting these families

Government discussion surrounding refugees oftentimes revolves around costs and quotas; the human element can get lost in the conversation. In order to add a personal touch to refugees' experiences in a new land — as well as to help them gain workplace skills — a social enterprise in New Zealand is making sure they’re known not by the label "refugee," but instead for the talents and know-how they bring to their new home.

Little Feather’s case and the prosecution of hundreds of others is part of what activists say is an aggressive campaign by U.S. law enforcement to suppress indigenous and environmental movements, using drawn-out criminal cases and lengthy prison sentences.

Inside Italy’s plot to infiltrate migrant rescue boats in the Mediterranean

Our reporter was invited on a migrant rescue trip organized by Save the Children. Unbeknownst to everyone on the boat, including us, he wasn’t the only person aboard working for someone else.

This is a story of lies and spies at sea?—?about how panic over immigration overtook concern for people fleeing violence and extreme poverty, and how Europe failed one of its biggest humanitarian tests in a generation.

Here are some short answers to questions you might have about news in immigration this week. Click for the longer answers, and to better understand how these issues affect real people.

How does seeking asylum work at the US border?

Short answer: It's a long process and applicants' success vary widely depending on where someone is from and whether they have a lawyer. It's not about simply saying, "I want asylum!"

Can the US deport asylum-seekers without giving them a chance to make their case?

Not according to US and international laws.

Why is the Trump administration asking the courts to remove safeguards for detaining migrant children?

If the government can no longer separate adults from their children, they are trying to hold more of these migrants in family detention centers. But the courts have already limited how long and in what conditions the government imprisons child migrants.

Can the government actually follow a judge's order to reunite children who have already been separated from their parents?

It's unclear. The children and parents were put on different bureaucratic tracks. Advocates want more transparency about whether they actually had any plans to reunite the families in the first place.

Stalked by Europe’s surge of populism, the continent’s leaders including French President Emmanuel Macron clinched a deal on migration after Italy flexed its muscles and Angela Merkel warned the European Union’s good signal” and Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said Italy is “no longer alone,” the deal raises as many questions as answers.

For all its many holes, the accord may be enough for Merkel to stave off a revolt by her Bavarian sister party that could have deprived her of a parliamentary majority. For Europe as a whole, faced with a populist Italian government emboldened by its victory, there may be more troubled times ahead.

Australia Passes Anti-Foreign Meddling Laws in Message to China
Aussie message to China | Australian lawmakers overwhelmingly passed bills to crack down on foreign interference, with Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull saying they’re needed to stop reported meddling by China and other countries in the government, media and universities. Other Western nations may soon follow suit: A similar bill has already been introduced in the U.S. Congress.

Will Rohingya ever get to go home? | Inside Story

Published on Jun 29, 2018
New questions are being raised about whether Rohingya refugees, living in Bangladesh, will be able to return to Myanmar.

More than 700,000 were forced to flee their homes last year during a military crackdown that the UN says amounted to "ethnic cleansing".

Myanmar has agreed to start letting them back into the country.

But Peter Maurer, who's head of the International Committee of the Red Cross, has cast doubt on that commitment after a visit to Myanmar's Rakhine State.

So, will the Rohingya ever return - and how long can Bangladesh afford to house them?

Thailand cave rescue: PM visits site as search continues
| Al Jazeera English

Published on Jun 29, 2018
Thailand's prime minister has told family members of a missing football team to ''keep faith'', as attempts to find and rescue the young players entered a sixth day.

Prayuth Chan-ocha visited the site of the flooded cave where the 12 boys and their coach disappeared last Saturday.

The rescue mission now involves more than a thousand people, including British and American teams and some are concerned the site is overcrowded with well-intentioned volunteers, reducing the efficiency of the search.

Russian and Syrian government jets and helicopters have hit an estimated hundred targets in the Syrian rebel stronghold of Deraa on Thursday.

Dozens of civilians were killed in the 24-hour barrage of barrel bombs and rocket fire.
