Egypt rejects EU plan to force refugees into camps

The debate over the European Union’s plan to set up centers for migrants in North Africa and the Middle East has been rekindled in Egypt, where officials reiterated their rejection of such centers.

RTX67938-870.jpg

ARTICLE SUMMARY
The debate over the European Union’s plan to set up centers for migrants in North Africa and the Middle East has been rekindled in Egypt, where officials reiterated their rejection of such centers.

So far, no northern African country has shown interest in the deal. Egypt, along with Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia and Albania, have officially rejected the EU move, putting EU leaders in dire straits.

edit

The EU seeks to establish these centers in Egypt to hamper the flow of migrants to Europe via the Mediterranean. On July 1, Egyptian parliament Speaker Ali Abdel Aal told the German newspaper Welt am Sonntag during a visit to Berlin that building refugee camps affiliated to the EU in Egypt would "violate the laws and constitution of our country.”

Legal migrants, he noted, can live freely wherever they want in Egypt and can't be forced to live in certain centers.

The proposal comes within the framework of the EU’s controversial plan to build regional "reception centers" in North Africa in hopes of putting the brakes on the influx of migrants and asylum seekers and foiling the attempts of human traffickers to send migrants to Europe across the sea. The deal, announced June 29 by EU leaders after their emergency meeting in Brussels, also includes building “controlled camps” in European countries.

Australia, Solomon Islands, PNG sign undersea cable deal amid criticism from China
By Pacific Affairs reporter Liam Fox

Solomon Islands cable deal

9146722-3x2-700x467.jpg

It is the 4,000-kilometre cable that Canberra did not want Beijing to build. Here's how the Solomon Islands internet cable deal came to fruition.
The newspaper was responding to Australian media reports that Australia and New Zealand would sign a new security pact with Pacific Island nations later in the year to counter the growing influence of China in the region.

The security pact, known as Biketawa Plus, is being considered by members of the Pacific Islands Forum and builds on the Biketawa Declaration signed in 2000 that has guided the forum's collective response to crises such as natural disasters and civil unrest.

The Global Times warned it would be a "strategic mistake" if the new security agreement was aimed at China.

"Instead of being overly cautious about China's rise, Australia and New Zealand should avoid misleading the region on China's role, and other regional countries should be clear about the consequences of being misled," its editorial said.

"The region will only suffer more losses from containing China."

The New Zealand Government has also copped criticism after it released its Strategic Defence Policy Statement last week which said China was challenging the existing international rules-based order.

At a press conference in Beijing on Monday China Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying urged New Zealand to "correct its wrong words and deeds and contribute more to the mutual trust and cooperation between our two countries".

U.S. and China may be ready to talk, Trump disrupts NATO unity, and traders see an end to the Fed’s hiking cycle.

It’s good to talk
Beijing and Washington sought to defuse an escalating trade war after the Trump administration released the biggest list yet of Chinese goods it may hit with tariff increases. China’s Vice Minister of Commerce Wang Shouwen said “when we have a trade problem, we should talk about it” -- alongside fresh threats of retaliation. The move back to the bargaining table matches some willingness from the Trump team to resume talks, according to a person familiar with the administration’s thinking. Both nations stand to lose by erecting barriers. Morgan Stanley estimatesthat if the U.S. goes ahead with threatened tariffs on $250 billion worth of imported Chinese goods, the hit to American growth would be around 0.3 to 0.4 percentage point and, for China, it could constitute a drag of 0.3 percentage point.

"I believe in NATO": After several contentious meetings, President Trump strongly reaffirmed his support for the alliance
Thursday, July 12, 2018 7:13 AM EST
President Trump reaffirmed his commitment to NATO and said he had won big spending concessions.

He said that the allies had agreed to his demand that they significantly increase military spending. The alliance, he said, is “very unified, very strong, no problem.” The comments came after he signed on to a joint statement that largely reaffirmed existing NATO commitments, and was at odds with some of his own statements.

Trump says NATO members agreed to spending increases | Al Jazeera English

Published on Jul 12, 2018
US President Donald Trump said that he is "very, very happy" because NATO members pledged to increase defence spending to levels "never seen before", despite denials from allies, such as France, that any additional pledges were made beyond previous targets.
In a news conference after a NATO summit in Brussels on Thursday, Trump said NATO members would increase their contribution at a "much faster clip" than previously scheduled.
"We made a tremendous amount of progress today," Trump said. "The United States' commitment to NATO remains very strong," he said, adding that it was "much more powerful than two days ago".
French President Emmanuel Macron, however, denied Trump's claim that NATO powers agreed to increase their defence spending beyond what they had already committed, according to the Associated Press news agency.

James Bays reports from Brussels.

Trump Administration Says It’s Reunited All Eligible Toddlers With Their Families

Trump Administration Says It’s Reunited All Eligible Toddlers With Their Families

The Trump administration announced Thursday in a Department of Homeland Security press release that it has reunited 57 children younger than 5 with their families as required by court order.

The order, given by California federal judge Dana Sabraw in response to a class action suit brought by the ACLU, required the government to reunite undocumented parents with children younger than 5 by July 10 and to reunite all families with separated children by July 26. (The ACLUnoted in a statement that the government missed Tuesday’s deadline by two days.)

The Trump administration triggered the family separation crisis by instituting a “zero-tolerance” policy of criminally prosecuting all undocumented border crossings rather than handling most such cases through civil proceedings as previous administrations had done. Children were thus separated from their parents while the parents were held in adult jails. While the administration isplanning to create facilities that will allow families to be held together while criminal charges against adults are pending, the adults who are being reunited with their children at the moment are beingequipped with ankle monitors and released pending further court appearances.

Matthew Bell/PRIn small English towns like Ramsgate, the job of mayor is mostly a ceremonial one. The leader is not supposed to be mucking about in politics.
But Trevor Shonk, mayor of the town about 80 miles east of London, could not help himself. “Good luck to Trump” was one of the first things he told me over the phone.

‘They like me a lot in the UK,’ says Trump. He’s not entirely wrong.

Trump Riles Hosts, Avoids Protests in British Visit
After unsettling NATO allies this week with incendiary comments, President Donald Trump arrived for a highly anticipated visit that quickly descended into drama. He publicly slammed Prime Minister Theresa May’s Brexit plan, suggesting it would “probably kill” a U.S.-U.K. trade deal, and said Boris Johnson, who recently resigned as foreign secretary, would be a good prime minister. Trump also renewed his attacks on London Mayor Sadiq Khan. He’s due to meet Queen Elizabeth II today, avoiding the 70,000 protesters expected in London with a controversial balloon depicting Trump as a giant baby.
