The city of Chemnitz, in the east German state of Saxony, has seen a series of violent anti-migrant protests.
They began last Sunday after the fatal stabbing of a 35-year-old German man…and the arrest of two suspects...asylum seekers from Iraq and Syria.
The streets were briefly owned by far-right protesters who chanted Germany for Germans, reportedly gave Hitler salutes and chased anyone who looked foreign.
Police struggled to keep control and fights continued the following day between far-right and left-wing demonstrators.
The violence has raised concerns the city’s a neo-nazi stronghold… exposing divisions in German society about immigration.
Chancellor Angela Merkel allowed more than a million migrants into the country at the height of the refugee crisis in 2015.
The biggest opposition party, the far-right Alternative for Germany, seized on what it saw as an open door policy, winning 92 parliamentary seats in last year’s elections.

The shooting of Laquan McDonald, a black teenager by Jason Van Dyke, a white police officer four years ago in Chicago generated massive protests - and a change in police policies.

McDonald's family has called for peace in the tense situation, but is also demanding accountability for police conduct.

Australia's political establishment was quick to denounce the explosive first speech of Katter's Australian Party senator Fraser Anning and his call for a return to immigration policies that would discriminate against non-Europeans and Muslims.

Senator Anning lamented the loss of Australia's cross-party consensus which he said had "recognised the importance of our predominantly European identity", and laid blame for the demise of Australia's European-based immigration program on "the rise of [former prime minister Gough] Whitlam in the Labor party".

But Liberal MP Tim Wilson rebuffed that version of history.

I had not seen that one. Amazing that 8 other cops that did not fire (they were correct), and then "Quick Draw McGraw" pulls up and in less than 60 seconds determines the kid is a threat. Shoots him once putting him on the ground then fires 14 more times (emptying the magazine) into the person (victim at this point) while he was laying on the ground.

If he shot him once and put him down, that was bad judgement. Shoot him twice after he went down, excessive use of force.

But emptying a magazine into a downed person?

This cops ass needs to go to jail. Permanently. That was fucking murder.

The definition of anti-Semitism has long been a dividing topic.

It is commonly used to describe hostility toward or discrimination against Jews as a religious or racial group.

But what's considered discriminative is disputed.

Thirty-one countries have endorsed a definition by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA), which includes 11 examples of anti-Semitic behaviour.

Not everyone agrees on those examples, however, and the issue has engulfed the UK's Labour Party in a row for months.

Its leader, Jeremy Corbyn, has been accused of holding anti-Semitic views

On Tuesday Labour bowed to mounting pressure and adopted the IHRA's full code, but with a caveat.

The row has been defused, for now.
