The IPCC’s dire warning to us all
Humanity must slash its carbon emissions immediately to have any hope of avoiding the more dire effects of climate change. That’s the sobering assessment from the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report. We will have to curb greenhouse gases by at least half of 2017 levels by 2030, and then achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, to limit global warming to 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels. Keeping warming below 1.5 °C will partially mitigate the impacts, including extinctions, melting of Arctic ice, damage to coral reefs, extreme weather and flooding. The world has already warmed by 1 °C.

The IPCC also describes how it can be done — and it won’t be easy. Low-carbon energy systems such as wind and solar power will need to provide most of the world's electricity by mid-century, forests will need to be expanded to take up more carbon dioxide and carbon will need to be extracted from the atmosphere and pumped underground. The disappearance of Jamal Khashoggi, a Saudi journalist critical of his country’s leadership, has evoked unusual alarm in the Gulf kingdom’s most important ally.

President Donald Trump, who has cultivated a close relationship with the Saudi royal family even as he’s lamented high oil prices, said yesterday he was “very concerned” about reports Khashoggi may have been murdered after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on Oct. 2 to obtain paperwork he needed to remarry.

Vice President Mike Pence went further, saying if the claims were true “this is a tragic day” and “the free world deserves answers.” Several U.S. lawmakers – in a rare threat against a key Middle East partner – warned Saudi Arabia could face economic consequences if it killed Khashoggi, a contributor to the Washington Post who has lived in voluntary exile for a year.

The Saudi government has vehemently denied abducting or killing Khashoggi, saying he left the consulate shortly after entering. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has demanded proof, while sounding relatively restrained so far on how Turkey might proceed from here.

If evidence does implicate the Saudi government in Khashoggi’s disappearance, it would mark a sharp escalation in how far authorities are willing to go to silence criticism. The first casualty would be the kingdom’s already fraught relationship with Turkey. But the damage could spread much further.

America’s representative to the United Nations has proven diplomatic enough to turn the GOP around.
While all eyes of the international community were on President Donald Trump at the United Nations General Assembly this week, many political observers were keenly watching U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley. With less than six weeks to go before the midterm elections on Nov. 6, the 2020 Republican primary talk will soon get underway. Many are wondering whether there’s a viable alternative to Trump if he decides to seek re-election. And if not, the GOP will need a nominee who can start to unite the Republican Party.

Currently, Trump’s favorability numbers are hovering around 40 percent, and given the likelihood that Democrats will win the majority in the U.S. House of Representatives, the president could very well be looking at impeachment hearings, investigations into his taxes and business practices, as well as subpoenas by the Oversight Committee.
