Tornadoes Kill 23 in Alabama
Officials say the death toll could still rise in the aftermath of at least two twisters that left a several-mile trail of destruction through Lee County Sunday — the state’s deadliest day for tornadoes since 2011. “I wouldn’t wish this on anybody,” one resident said. Gov. Kay Ivey extended an existing state of emergency due to severe weather, and search and rescue efforts will continue today.

Are more tornadoes expected? The worst seems to have passed, but the same storm system is expected to blanket much of the eastern U.S. with winter weather.

Will Malaysia Reopen the Search for MH 370?

Will Malaysia Reopen the Search for MH 370?
“We are prepared to look at it.” So said the country’s transport minister five years after the Malaysia Airlines flight disappeared with 239 people aboard — and 10 months after the most recent search concluded. A widespread effort led by the Australian government and another search by U.S. firm Ocean Infinity attempted to locate the aircraft, but only three confirmed wing pieces have been recovered from the Indian Ocean.

Why now? Ocean Infinity claims new technology could help improve its search effort, prompting interest from the Malaysian government.

Sanders on Venezuela – Does His Critique of US Policy Go Far Enough?
At the CNN town hall, Sanders opposed U.S. intervention in Venezuela, refused to call Maduro a dictator, or recognize Guaido, but he didn’t call for an end to sanctions – with Jacqueline Luqman, Eugene Puryear, Norman Solomon and host Paul Jay

US shuts Jerusalem consulate, downgrades Palestinian mission |

Published on Mar 4, 2019
The United States has officially shuttered its consulate in Jerusalem, downgrading the status of its main diplomatic mission to Palestine.

For decades, the consulate functioned as a de facto embassy to the Palestinians. Now, that outreach will be handled by a Palestinian affairs unit under the comment of the US Embassy to Israel.

Palestinian leaders see the decision as another move against them by US President Donald Trump's administration, with which they froze contact after his 2017 decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

ACUMEN
In Cape Town, 'If It's Yellow, Let It Mellow' Is Practically Law
The South African capital’s crippling water crisis has spawned a host of new taboos and industries.

It’s 11 am on a Saturday, and both my Cape Town local mall and my bladder are pumping. After one B-grade Americano too many, I slip into the gents. Look at the state of it! Whoever went before me hasn’t just left the seat down (and wiped it too); they’ve even gone and flushed. Whatever happened to “if it’s yellow, let it mellow”?

The heady aroma of stewed urine is just one of the taboos Capetonians have turned up their noses at in response to the city’s crippling water crisis. At the height of the crisis, the city published the ultimate name-and-shame: a map of the city that showed which addresses were using the most water. Social media shaming added to the fervor, and neighbors would comment passive-aggressively about one another’s suspiciously green lawns.

City dwellers also have started to get excited about flushing No. 2s with a quarter bucket of three-day-old shower water (there’s a certain Pythagorean fun to it); embraced dirty cars and learned to live with parched lawns and half-full swimming pools. We save rinse water from washing machine loads and dish-filled sinks; even hotels have urged guests to save their shower water in buckets. It’s a whole new world … and it’s produced real change.

Catholics think the Vatican will self-destruct if it can’t tackle sexual abuse

love there leader /supposedly doing everything perfectly, too much for the slightest of change to take place

The Catholic Church's recent summit on protecting children was supposed to be an opportunity to prove that the religious institution was finally taking its sex abuse crisis seriously.

But after four days, the 190 cardinals and bishops in attendance came away with a surprisingly basic list of 21 guidelines, with suggestions like creating a handbook on what to do when a sex abuse case emerges and telling law enforcement if an offense occurs.

Mark Rozzi, a Pennsylvania state representative who says he was groomed and raped by a priest starting when he was 13, was not impressed.

“What I need to see is true policy changes that will actually protect children,” he told VICE News in Rome. “They will destroy themselves internally, by their own self-protectionism.”

In major blow to Canada's PM Trudeau, second minister quits | Al

Published on Mar 5, 2019
In a serious blow to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, a second member of his cabinet in Canada resigned saying she had lost confidence in how the government had dealt with an escalating political scandal.
The departure of recently appointed Treasury Board President Jane Philpott, who was in charge of government spending, deprives Trudeau of another powerful female member of cabinet just months before an election that polls show he could lose.
Philpott expressed unhappiness about the government's response to allegations that officials inappropriately pressured former justice minister Jody Wilson-Raybould last year to help major construction company SNC-Lavalin Group Inc avoid a corruption trial.

Migrants with open wounds, head injuries and other serious ailments are being released by the Border Patrol with little or no treatment.
Tuesday, March 5, 2019 10:29 AM EST
An average of 2,200 migrants a day are now crossing the nation’s 1,900-mile border with Mexico. Yet most of the Customs and Border Protection facilities along the border lack sufficient accommodations, staffing or procedures to thoroughly assess health needs or provide more than basic emergency care, a situation that has led to dangerous medical oversights.
