Superyachts and private schools: Britain's dirty money problem

Russian money – some legitimate, some the proceeds of fraud – was channeled through a Lithuanian bank into the UK, according to a major leak of banking documents. The Guardian’s Juliette Garside has been investigating for months and describes how Prince Charles and some of England’s most exclusive schools have benefited. South Africa: Two white farmers jailed for murder of black teen |

Published on Mar 6, 2019
A South African court has handed lengthy jail sentences to two white farmers who murdered a black teenager they suspected of stealing sunflowers in a remote farming community.
Pieter Doorewaard, 28, and Philip Schutte, 35, were found guilty of killing 15-year-old Matlhomola Mosweu in April 2017 after claiming they caught him taking a plant from a farm in the area.
On Wednesday, Doorewaard was sentenced to at least 18 years in prison while Schutte was given a 23-year term.
Judge Ronald Hendricks said in mitigation of Doorewaard and Schutte's sentences that "there was no direct intention to kill the deceased".

Is Netanyahu’s election campaign on the way to war?

Benjamin Netanyahu claimed in 2008 that Prime Minister Ehud Olmert had no moral authority to launch peace talks in Palestinians, so he should now implement the same rule on himself and avoid generating a war.

Can Saudi Arabia afford a stimulus?

Oil-revenue-dependent Saudi Arabia still has $490 billion in reserve assets, but its massive foreign and domestic commitments and a long-term declining demand curve for oil could spell trouble down the road.

Reports: North Korea Restoring Rocket Site
Days after the collapse of a second summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, experts say Pyongyang has been rebuilding a long-range rocket launch facility it began dismantling after the first summit last year. Meanwhile, national security adviser John Bolton said North Korea may face even tougher U.S. sanctions if it doesn’t denuclearize soon.

What does this mean for future talks? South Korea’s intelligence chief reportedly believes Pyongyang is restoring the site either as a back-up option if negotiations fail — or to stage another dismantling if diplomatic efforts are successful.

The embattled Canadian prime minister, Justin Trudeau, has received a public show of support from his cabinet after a second minister resigned this week amid a simmering corruption scandal. The remaining 33 cabinet members have all pledged their support for Trudeau, and several appeared on stage with him on Monday at a campaign-style rally for his Liberal government’s climate change policy.

  • Bribery claims. Treasury head Jane Philpott was the second minister to resign over claims that Trudeau’s aides pressured his former attorney general not to prosecute a major engineering firm accused of bribing the Libyan government.

Even before Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un met for their second summit in Hanoi last week, North Korea had already started rebuilding a rocket launch site that was partially dismantled as a goodwill gesture following their first encounter in 2018. Satellite images of the Sohae satellite launching station at Tongchang-ri suggested several structures were undergoing restoration, threatening the credibility of Trump’s signature foreign policy success.

  • Sanctions threat. Trump’s national security adviser, John Bolton, who previously described the Hanoi summit as “unquestionably a success”, said that if the Kim regime showed no signs of giving up its nuclear program, the US would look at “ramping up” its existing, harsh sanctions on the country.

Chinese hackers target universities as Huawei trial starts

  • Chinese cyberattacks targeted more than 24 universities around the world, looking for information on US maritime military technology, according to the Wall Street Journal, which obtained the report from iDefense, a cybersecurity group that identified the targets. [WSJ / Dustin Volz]
  • Experts think the traces of the incident link to a Chinese hacker group known by various names, including Leviathan and Mudcarp. The hackers sent phishing emails that appeared to be from trusted sources but gave hackers access to universities’ internal data. No connection between the hack and the Chinese government has been proven yet. Beijing has denied any involvement. [The Verge / Shannon Liao]
  • The mission sought out maritime military technology research, particularly about submarine missiles. In most cases, the institutions hackers accessed via the phishing emails were tied to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, which is connected to the US Navy. They weren't necessarily seeking out classified materi

North Korea is still building up nuclear

  • North Korea has started rebuilding the Sohae Satellite Launching Station after it was partially dismantled last summer, according to reports that surfaced just after the Trump-Kim denuclearization talks fell apart in Hanoi, Vietnam, last week. [NYT / Choe Sang-Hun]
  • Satellite images of the station in Tongchang-ri show work on the missile launch pad and test engine stand. Experts say the same technology created to launch satellites can be used to run long-range missiles. North Korea may be developing the site as a strategic move against Trump, too, who refused to lessen sanctions against the country in return for closing nuclear facilities. [CNN / Joshua Berlinger]
  • After Hanoi, there is no agreement keeping Kim Jong Un from growing his country’s nuclear program. President Trump walking away from the summit may actually lead North Korea to increase production of materials such as plutonium. But it’s hard to tell what the North is signaling: The reconstruction of the site reportedly began even before Hanoi. [WSJ / Timothy W. Martin and Andrew Jeong]
  • New roofs and doors on buildings were spotted in the photos ... but why? North Korea’s unusual press conference following Hanoi didn’t hint that it was pulling out of negotiations with the US, despite the construction. The rebuilding could just be a negotiating tool for Kim, who was not willing to reach a nuclear agreement without Trump lifting economic sanctions on his country. [Associated Press]
  • These sanctions are starting to really hurt North Korea. Food production in the country is the lowest in years, a new report by the United Nations said on Wednesday. Millions of its citizens don’t have enough to eat, and the UN has called for $120 million in aid. Kim has been criticized for spending money on nuclear programs instead of his own people. [CNN / Joshua Berlinger]

Forced Cohabitation: Why Indian Couples Had to Live in Sin ... Until Now
Nikita Sinha is taking on a culture of cohabitation that can leave women in India with nothing.

In January 2016, Budhu Nag, 30, approached activist Nikita Sinha with an unusual request — to help him marry the woman he loved. Assuming it to be a typical situation where the parents object, she declined. After he pleaded she hear his story, Sinha was shocked to find him in a live-in relationship with a woman. The couple had a 10-year-old daughter.

This was the first time Sinha had heard of Dhuku. Nag and his partner are among thousands of tribal couples who participate in the arrangement where couples live together without getting married — not by choice, but by compulsion. “When a couple gets married, they are expected to throw a feast for the entire village,” Sinha says. “But when they fail to do so, villagers do not permit them to get married, and they start living as Dhuku.”

Today's Listen
How government wrongdoing has helped conspiracy-theory culture survive and thrive.

Hokyoung Kim for NPR
Conspiracy theories are a feature of today's news and politics, but they've really been a part of American life since the country's founding. That appetite has been fueled, in part, by real instances in which the U.S. government has harmed people. In the Prohibition-era battle against illegal drinking, for instance, the government publicly announced it was contaminating industrial alcohols to prevent their abuse. Bootleggers stripped the contaminants out, leading to an arms race — and to the poisoning deaths of thousands of Americans. The Throughline podcast’s latest episode examines that and other examples. Trump’s new science adviser says he won’t correct the president on climate change

For the first time since he took office, President Trump has a science adviser. Kelvin Droegemeier is a well-respected meteorologist who believes humans play a “significant” role in climate change. But he’s not going to tell the president that.

Droegemeier does believe climate change is occurring, but when we asked whether he has an opinion on Trump’s climate-denying tweets, he said, “No, no I don’t. I really focus on providing him with everything that he needs, and that’s my role.”
