HOW TO THINK ABOUT IT

A long time coming. Friday’s vote wasn’t exactly a surprise — but it didn’t come about easily, either. Taiwan has long been home to Asia’s largest annual gay pride parade. The Supreme Court itself paved the way in 2017 by ruling that defining marriage as the union between a man and a woman was unconstitutional. But a majority of its citizens voted against same-sex marriage rights in a public referendum last November, while the legislature’s decision to wait until the eleventh hour to adhere to the court’s order demonstrates that unease by appearing at odds with broader Taiwanese sentiment. Still, the Taiwanese Parliament’s decision on Friday ensures a level of freedom the LGBTQ community doesn’t enjoy elsewhere in Asia. That’s probably why gay couples across the island state had begun planning their weddings even before their legislative win. Though Taiwan may be overlooked globally, one 31-year-old gay man told AFP, “the things we have done are visionary and with purpose.”

eAPg5ngVzX-UUwed-D1vrydN_i0PWaMLtC9pHXetHEVZXxcbXYFXuNx-NbgD6BZbjruk78NUd7uVfNWGUpfBkyGbU2p2R4FY9nnRUw=s0-d-e1-ft
Is South Asia next? For decades, countries in the world’s most densely populated region have followed British-era laws that discriminate against the LGBTQ community. But in recent years, they’ve begun to break with that legacy — even as they remain largely conservative societies otherwise. Last October, India legalized same-sex relationships. Pakistan now has a law that punishes discrimination against transgender people. Nepal legalized homosexual relations in 2007. And in 2016, Sri Lanka’s Supreme Court recognized that “consensual sex between people of the same sex should not be policed by the state nor should it be grounds for criminalization." For LGBTQ rights activists in South Asia, same-sex marriages are the next step, and Taiwan’s move will only strengthen their campaign.

Not in their backyard. Analysts are asking whether Brunei’s draconian new punishment will influence other Southeast Asian states that are far less welcoming than those mentioned above. Even before that decision — slightly dialed back this week after Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah extended a moratorium on the death penalty — Malaysia’s tourism minister claimed there were no gay people in his country, where gay sex remains illegal. In Indonesia, meanwhile, Human Rights Watch says that “a government-driven moral panic” is fueling denunciations of the LGBT community there, with some localities even proposing to out allegedly gay men to the authorities. In the latter two countries, conservative Islam is imparting greater influence on the local political landscapes.

Thumbing a nose at Big Brother? China’s growing economic clout and recent technological advances have helped it wean away Taiwan’s former diplomatic allies, and instead emerge as the envy of much of Asia — and beyond. But Friday’s legislative decision serves to underscore how Taiwan, itself once an economic success story, stands in shining contrast to its cross-strait brother when it comes to respect for individual choices. Homosexuality has been legal in China since 1997, but same-sex marriages remain barred. As the gay rights movement there grows — in one high-profile act, a couple sued local authorities in 2015 for failing to accept their application to marry — activists might find inspiration in a system they’ve otherwise been taught to see as inferior to that of the communist mainland.

Good for business. Even before Taiwan’s historic vote, major multinational companies were lining up in support of same-sex marriage. Global giants like Airbnb, Deutsche Bank, Google and Microsoft all publicly agreed the island’s economy would be far better off, buoyed by what economists say would be increased productivity and lower levels of workplace stress, among other factors.

Conservatives have started a full-blown assault on abortion rights

After Alabama passed a near-total ban on abortion this week, politicians, celebrities, and a lot of America sprang into action.

Donations flooded in to reproductive justice groups, like the Alabama-based Yellowhammer Fund. Just hours after Alabama passed its law — which has yet to go into effect — Amanda Reyes, who runs the fund, noticed about $15,000 had been added to Yellowhammer’s PayPal account.

“We have seen spikes after the 2016 election and the Kavanaugh hearings, but not this much of a spike,” said Yamani Hernandez, who runs the National Network of Abortion Funds. Since the Alabama law passed, the group has raised more than $262,000.

Alabama’s ban outlaws all abortions, except for pregnancies that pose a “serious health risk” to the mother. There are no exceptions for rape or incest, and doctors who perform the procedure could be imprisoned for 99 years. The law, according to Planned Parenthood, is the most extreme abortion restriction passed since Roe v. Wade legalized abortion nationwide more than four decades ago.

And that’s only the latest sweeping abortion restriction to pass through state legislatures in recent weeks. Emboldened by the Supreme Court’s new conservative majority and a president who lies about doctors executing babies, four states have passed laws that would ban abortion as early as six weeks into a pregnancy, before many women know they’re pregnant. That restriction once struck many activists within the anti-abortion movement as too extreme. Not anymore.

Democratic candidates for the 2020 presidential election immediately spoke out about the Alabama ban. Former Vice President Joe Biden denounced it as “unconstitutional.” Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders called it an “utter disgrace,” and California Sen. Kamala Harris compared it to “a scene from ‘The Handmaid’s Tale.’” New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren went even further: They released detailed policies to protect abortion access.

Abortion rights organizations are also prepared to fight back. Planned Parenthood has vowed to sue over the bans, which will almost certainly be blocked in court. And next Tuesday, advocacy groups are planning nationwide protests.

There’s a mental health crisis among Florida’s kids

Anyone in Florida can be “Baker Acted,” but it’s become much more common for kids recently.

The decades-old state law says that someone threatening to harm themselves or others can be involuntarily or voluntarily committed to a mental health facility for 72 hours. Invoking the act has become so common in Florida that people use it as a verb — increasingly for teens: Between 2011 and 2016, the number of Baker Acted kids rose by nearly 50 percent.

Kids like 16-year-old Chris Ammann. He’s been flagged four times and has spent a few stints at local children's crisis facilities. Between stays, he’s been back in school.

“I'll just go to school, put on a mask, pretend like I'm happy and I'm OK so people don’t ask me what’s wrong,” Chris told VICE News. “It's hard to answer that question when everything is wrong. So I pretend that I'm happy and tell people I'm OK, but inside I'm not.”

We followed Chris and two other kids' families, looking at the complicated reality for them, as well as counselors, families, law enforcement and school officials, as they make decisions on accessing vital mental health care for children in distress.

Watch our full-episode segment, which originally aired on VICE News Tonight on HBO.

This clinic is still performing abortions in Alabama

At the Alabama Women’s Center, the phones were ringing off the hook the day after Gov. Kay Ivey signed the country’s most restrictive abortion bill into law. Women have been calling by the dozens, trying to figure out if they can still have an abortion.

Despite the state’s latest effort to block abortion access, the clinic went about its business this week. “I have assisted in about 20,000 [abortions],” said LaShonda Pinchon, a registered nurse who works at the clinic. “And I feel like this should be as common as going to the doctor and having a bunion removed.”

And for patients, making the decision to have an abortion is no easier. “I've stopped crying and prayed about it,” one woman who traveled from Tennessee to the clinic told VICE News. “I have nothing to offer this child. You know, I'm already spread thin. I have my other three to take care of.”

only just begun, be a good change
other mongrels were dead shits

Boy, did they ever get that wrong!

LABOR had: unity, clear policies, strong leadership, vision for the future
COALITION had: disunity, no policies, incompetent leadership, fear-mongering, lies, deception, hate.

And yet... COALITION win.

I genuinely feel physically sick.

Trump Denies Infighting Over Iran
Hopefully, Tehran is confused. That’s what President Donald Trump says about reports that his top foreign policy officials, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and national security adviser John Bolton, were feuding over Iran policy. This comes after a drumbeat of moves, from sending warships and bombers to the Persian Gulf to evacuating some staff from the U.S. embassy in Baghdad.

What’s the dispute? According to sourced reports — dismissed as “bullsh*t” by Trump — Pompeo’s aiming at negotiations with Tehran, which aligns with Trump’s statements, but Bolton, who’s lately had more policy clout, is seeking regime change.

OZY’s security analyst, John McLaughlin, tries to make sense of U.S. Iran policy.

Australia election: How Scott Morrison used Labor's campaign against them

By Patricia Karvelas, presenter of ABC's RN Drive

Analysis - Australia's Prime Minister Scott Morrison has earned a permanent place as a Liberal Party legend by returning to government in what was meant to be an unwinnable election for the Coalition.

Mr Morrison smashed the doctrine that disunity will lead to electoral death.

Despite three prime ministers in two terms of government, the Queensland swing to back the Coalition and swings in Tasmania and WA showed that ultimately jobs and fear of change are too dominant.

Turn Off That Phone! Now Kids Are Rebuking Their Parents
A new global survey suggests parents have something new to feel guilty about when it comes to smartphones and their children.

There’s a lot to feel guilty about these days as a parent: working too much to spend time with your children; feeding the aforementioned children a steady diet of pizza, peanut butter sandwiches and Pepperidge Farm Goldfish; ruining everyone else’s plane ride. Perhaps no source of parental guilt, however, gets more attention these days — when it can get our attention, that is — than the overuse of electronic devices.

Smartphones have now been implicated in more developmental and relationship problems than Charlie Sheen. And while the instinct as a parent is to focus on what our children are focusing on — increasingly, pixilated screens a few inches from their faces — it might be about time we focused on doing something more about the screen that is only a few inches from our own faces … after you finish this article, naturally (your kids will be fine for another minute).

Shane Wenzel was a self-proclaimed 'life coach' in Auckland. (File photo).
What was supposed to be a short holiday in Hong Kong has led to a permanent vacation for an Australian "kaumatua" and convicted fraudster, who's been barred from returning to New Zealand.

Shane Wenzel, who also went by the name of Tane Rakau, was a self-styled "business coach" and discharged bankrupt with a curious past.

Wenzel is not Māori, but claimed to have been accorded kaumatua status by a "hapu" of Māori followers, to whom he provided "life coaching" in an arrangement that labelled cult-like by some former followers.

In 2012 he was jailed for three years after being found guilty of eight charges relating to what the Serious Fraud Office called an elaborate mortgage fraud. Wenzel encouraged home buyers to apply for mortgages based on inflated purchase prices for South Auckland properties.

EDITOR’S PICKS
The Second Drone Age

Donald Trump is on track to prosecute more journalistic sources, using the 1917 Espionage Act, than Barack Obama. On the Intercepted podcast this week, Jeremy Scahill explored the weaponization of this draconian law against investigative journalism — and the case of Daniel Hale, who faces 50 years in prison for allegedly disclosing classified documents, including ones about U.S. drone warfare.

The U.S. was the first country to use drones to kill people after 9/11, but the genie is out of the bottle. As reporter Umar Farooq revealed, Turkey is among the world’s most prolific users of lethal drones, manufacturing these aircraft on its own. We are now in the second drone age, in which killer drones are used by a widening number of states and nonstate actors.
