From my blog today:

It was announced today that the Prime Minister intends to authorise funding for a significant increase in the number of prison places and to allow a broadening of stop and search powers for police. There is a long-standing perception on the part of politicians, whether it’s borne out by reality or not, that seemingly ‘tough’ law and order policies are popular with the electorate. It is, however, a universally acknowledged truth that too much of our prison estate is dated, cramped and, inimical to decency and safety for both staff and prisoners, as well as the provision of meaningful, constructive, regimes. It is not too much to say that if money can be provided for creating all these new places, it can also be found for ensuring that the prisons we already have are safe, decent and constructive establishments. Stop and search powers are important tools for police to have in maintaining law and order. However, wrongly and too widely applied, they can end up achieving little beyond putting community relations under strain. For this reason, we would urge the very greatest caution.

All of that said, these measures, taken alongside significant funding increases for front line policing and the National Health Service, suggest that the Government is being put on an election footing. We do not for one moment believe that Mr Johnson will initiate a General Election this side of Christmas unless his hand is forced and he really has no alternative. Alas we are living in what the Chinese proverb refers to as ‘interesting times’ and a state of preparedness is a necessity.

Those intent on frustrating Brexit will try every trick in the book including, we fear, constitutional outrages such as trying to involve The Queen in the process. Following the Brecon and Radnorshire by-election, the Government’s majority in the House of Commons is now down to one. There is nothing inherently unusual about minority Governments and they were commonplace during the Nineteen Sixties and Seventies. In those far off days of consensus politics, governments could generally rely on being able to do deals with opposition parties to get Government business through the House, and not having a functional majority was less of a problem. Since then the tectonic plates have shifted somewhat. The current leader of Her Majesty’s Opposition is a Marxist in all but name and his little interest in anything other than procuring the keys of Downing Street if he can contrive to do so. Were he to prove successful he might have the backing of the Scottish National Party which would doubtless demand another independence referendum as the price of its support, thereby endangering the unity of the very United Kingdom. Our Liberal Democrat friends might even lend him their support, although Mr Corbyn should understand that they don’t actually believe in democratic process when it doesn’t work out in a way which supports their world view.

All of this – and much else besides – must be a significant headache for the Prime Minister. We are sure Mr Johnson doesn’t want the distinction of being the first Prime Minister to lose a confidence vote since 1979 or only the second to do so since 1945. Given the uncertainties of the times in which we are now living, he is right to be on high alert and in a state of the utmost preparedness.

Candidates now bypass the mainstream media and communicate directly with voters via personal digital media. They're no longer dependent on big advertising buys; newspaper-TV; billboards, etc. So why does their remain a soaring escalation of fundraising? Why do they still need all that money?

Amazon on fire

The Amazon Rainforest is often called "the planet's lungs."

The current number of fires in Brazil is unusually high, with more than 73,000 so far in 2019 — an 80 percent increase from 2018. Half of those fires started in the past month. Experts say most of the fires were ignited by humans — likely by farmers and ranchers to clear land, which is an annual practice.

Cause for mass shootings?

Bigotry and hate are more linked to mass shootings than mental illness, experts say.

Recently, Arthur Evans, the CEO of the American Psychological Association, put forth a statement that said there is a very weak link between mental illness and mass shootings. Instead, he put forward the hypothesis that hate and bigotry combined with unfettered access to guns leads to these deadly affairs.

President Trump's evident desire to identify who's most "loyal" to Israel has a clear winner: U.S. evangelicals.

Not only do they outpace U.S. Jews in their support for policies that favor the Israeli government, but U.S. evangelicals have also become the fastest-growing sector of the Israeli tourism market. The developments may even be related.

"I'd say close to 100% of our travelers come back extremely pro-Israel in their political views," says Andy Cook, a pastor who leads evangelical tours of the Holy Land twice a year.

Back to its roots

Tourist travel to Israel is growing about 10% a year, according to Eyal Carlin, the incoming North America director of the Israeli Tourism Ministry, with evangelical Christians a growing share of U.S. visitors.

"More and more companies are entering each year with faith-based or evangelical packages," Carlin says. "The evangelical world is going back to its roots."

The trend coincides with growing evangelical support for Trump's embrace of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his hard-line policies, even as U.S. Jews have grown more critical.

To Some Zionist Christians And Jews, The Bible Says Jerusalem Is Israel's Capital

A recent Pew Research Center survey found that 42% of U.S. Jews say Trump "favors the Israelis too much," while just 15% of U.S. evangelicals agreed with that statement.

Evangelical leaders of the Christian Zionism movement, from Jerry Falwell Sr. to John Hagee, have attributed their fervent support for the state of Israel to their own Holy Land travel, according to Daniel Hummel, author of Covenant Brothers: Evangelicals, Jews, and U.S.-Israeli Relations.

"They say visiting Israel was a key part of their political awakening," Hummel says, "and this goes down to the rank-and-file people in their organizations."

Pilgrims gather on the banks of the Jordan River at Galilee for baptisms. Israeli authorities are eager to accommodate tourists' interest in ancient Israel, according to author Daniel Hummel.

A prime Israeli selling point for evangelical tourism is the opportunity "to walk where Jesus walked." The highlight for Robert Bowman, who visited Israel on an evangelical tour in 2017, was a visit to the dungeons in Jerusalem where Jesus is said to have been imprisoned while he awaited crucifixion.
