China coronavirus cases pass 70,500 as WHO mission gets underway
The death toll from the virus has now passed 1,700. WHO experts have arrived in Beijing to talk with their Chinese counterparts on how to deal with the outbreak.

The number of deaths from the coronavirus in China rose to more than 1,700 on Monday as international experts began a joint mission with their Chinese counterparts to tackle the epidemic.

The total number of cases of so-called COVID-19 in the Asian country, most of them in the central province of Hubei, has surpassed 70,500, according to the latest update from the country's National Health Commission.

The World Health Organization (WHO) said its specialists had held their first meetings with Chinese health experts as part of efforts to find out how the new virus is spreading.

Mike Bloomberg is about to get grilled.


The billionaire former mayor of New York will take the debate stage alongside his competitors for the Democratic presidential nomination for the first time on Wednesday, and by all accounts the knives are already out.


Bloomberg hasn’t appeared on a ballot yet, but he’s already spent a record-breaking $400 million on advertising, which got him up to the polling threshold to make the debate. That’s in addition to spending hundreds of millions more on the DNC, as well as on candidates and causes to help bring in endorsements from the likes of the mayors of D.C., San Francisco, and Houston.


But aside from the bad look of an oligarch buying his way into the primary, his past positions are also very out of step with today’s Democratic Party:

• He was the pioneer of “stop-and-frisk” policing in New York City.
  
• He opposed raising the minimum wage.
  
• He’s been photographed with plenty of people who aren’t exactly popular on the left, like Harvey Weinsteinand Trump.
  
• He actually has a history of complementing Trump.
  
• He called Bernie Sanders’ supporters dumb.
  
• He said large cohorts of black and Latino men “don’t know how to behave in the workplace.”
  
• He allegedly made comments that women who worked for him were a “nice piece of ass.”
  
• Last year he referred to transgender women as “she or it.”

So far, his fellow Democrats haven’t taken him to task for any of this. But the Dems haven’t given President Trump a pass for his racist behavior or for bragging about sexually harassing women. They likely won’t let Bloomberg get away with his comments, either.

   So-called "junk bond king" Michael Milken, disgraced ex-Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich and former New York Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik were among the white collar criminals who benefited from President Donald Trump's clemency yesterday. Acting on what he claimed was advice from friends and associates, Trump either pardoned or commuted the sentences of 11 people — most of them wealthy White men convicted of corruption, lying or fraud over the past few decades.
   
   Why does it matter? While previous presidents have also pardoned their friends and allies, observers say Trump has sidestepped the traditional Justice Department process.

   "I am very keen to get off this ship." So said one of the hundreds of passengers who disembarked in Japan after more than two weeks quarantined on a cruise ship. Along with news that the number of new coronavirus infections in mainland China fell for the second straight day, it offered a rare dose of hopethat the worst might be over. Still, the death toll has now exceeded 2,000, while analysts remain nervous about the health of the global economy too.
   
   What new steps is China taking? It's enlisting the help of tens of thousands of military veterans who say they're still "on a mission" despite hanging up their uniforms.
   
   

1. UK Shuts Out Unskilled Workers[/paste:font]
   Saying it's taking "full control" of its borders post-Brexit, the British government has unveiled an immigration plan that won't grant visas to unskilled, non-English-speaking workers — including those from the European Union. Officials also urged local businesses to "adapt and adjust to the end of free movement." While the opposition Labour Party called the new policy exclusionary, Home Secretary Priti Patel said it's aimed at attracting "the brightest and the best."
   
   How will it work? In the Australian-style points-based system, immigrants will need to earn 70 points — 50 of which they'd get from speaking English and having an offer of skilled employment and an approved sponsor.
