China coronavirus cases pass 70,500 as WHO mission gets underway
The death toll from the virus has now passed 1,700. WHO experts have arrived in Beijing to talk with their Chinese counterparts on how to deal with the outbreak.

The number of deaths from the coronavirus in China rose to more than 1,700 on Monday as international experts began a joint mission with their Chinese counterparts to tackle the epidemic.

The total number of cases of so-called COVID-19 in the Asian country, most of them in the central province of Hubei, has surpassed 70,500, according to the latest update from the country's National Health Commission.

The World Health Organization (WHO) said its specialists had held their first meetings with Chinese health experts as part of efforts to find out how the new virus is spreading.

Americans Pulled From Stricken Cruise Ship
Reportedly flying with 44 infected passengers tented away from fellow travelers, some 400 U.S. citizens wearing sophisticated respirator masks were flown out of Japan this morning on two repurposed cargo planes. "Can't get off here fast enough," said one California woman. The Americans, who will face a 14-day quarantine once they're stateside, had been aboard the Diamond Princess cruise ship, where 355 of 3,700 passengers have become the largest cluster of COVID-19 cases outside of China.

How bad is it now? The death toll has reached 1,770 — almost all in China — with 70,500 infected.

    Coronavirus Claims Various New Victims
Although the number of new infections fell below 2,000 for the first time since January, the head of a Wuhan hospital died today — becoming China's seventh medical worker fatality. With the death toll approaching 1,900, the coronavirus outbreak’s economic impact is spreading too: South Korean President Moon Jae-in spoke of an economic emergency, thanks to falling demand for Korean-made goods, while Apple announced it’s cutting sales projections for the first quarter.

Why do Apple stats matter? Analysts consider the American company to be the most telling indicator of how the global economy’s doing.

  1. Boy Scouts Go Bankrupt Amid Sex Abuse Suits[/paste:font]
Facing hundreds of lawsuits spanning decades of alleged sexual abuse, the 110-year-old organization filed for bankruptcy protection today to save itself from financial ruin. More than a dozen states have temporarily lifted the statute of limitations on reporting sex crimes, so even more lawsuits are likely to follow. Boy Scouts National Chairman Jim Turley said he was “deeply sorry” that measures protecting kids from predators “weren’t always enough.”

How will bankruptcy help? The move will allow the organization — which has already paid out $150 million since 2017 — to hash out a settlement fund with both plaintiffs and creditors.

  1. HSBC to Shed Jobs as Profits Tank[/paste:font]
If only they’d saved for a rainy day. After watching its annual profits plunge 33 percent, the London-based lender said it would slash 35,000 jobs over the next three years — or around 15 percent of its global staff. By the end of 2022, HSBC hopes to have cut annual costs by $4.5 billion and dropped some $100 billion in assets.

What’s the bank’s game plan? Its strategy includes dialing back its U.S. and European presence and shifting more business to Asia and the Middle East.

TBH
HAVE MY DOUBTS RE THAT BLOOMBERG SCOUNDREL
possibly dodgy/dicey like any of the others
dems, are not going to get in,anyway
geussing, good enough for me ha

The latest:

Knives out for Bloomberg at tonight’s Democratic debate
If you’re not signed up for this newsletter, change that by clicking this link.

Mike Bloomberg is about to get grilled.

The billionaire former mayor of New York will take the debate stage alongside his competitors for the Democratic presidential nomination for the first time on Wednesday, and by all accounts the knives are already out.

Bloomberg hasn’t appeared on a ballot yet, but he’s already spent a record-breaking $400 million on advertising, which got him up to the polling threshold to make the debate. That’s in addition to spending hundreds of millions more on the DNC, as well as on candidates and causes to help bring in endorsements from the likes of the mayors of D.C., San Francisco, and Houston.

But aside from the bad look of an oligarch buying his way into the primary, his past positions are also very out of step with today’s Democratic Party:

So far, his fellow Democrats haven’t taken him to task for any of this. But the Dems haven’t given President Trump a pass for his racist behavior or for bragging about sexually harassing women. They likely won’t let Bloomberg get away with his comments, either.

  1. Trump Wields His Pardon Powers
So-called "junk bond king" Michael Milken, disgraced ex-Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich and former New York Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik were among the white collar criminals who benefited from President Donald Trump's clemency yesterday. Acting on what he claimed was advice from friends and associates, Trump either pardoned or commuted the sentences of 11 people — most of them wealthy White men convicted of corruption, lying or fraud over the past few decades.

Why does it matter? While previous presidents have also pardoned their friends and allies, observers say Trump has sidestepped the traditional Justice Department process.

  1. Coronavirus Slows Its Spread in China[/paste:font]
"I am very keen to get off this ship." So said one of the hundreds of passengers who disembarked in Japan after more than two weeks quarantined on a cruise ship. Along with news that the number of new coronavirus infections in mainland China fell for the second straight day, it offered a rare dose of hopethat the worst might be over. Still, the death toll has now exceeded 2,000, while analysts remain nervous about the health of the global economy too.

What new steps is China taking? It's enlisting the help of tens of thousands of military veterans who say they're still "on a mission" despite hanging up their uniforms.

  1. UK Shuts Out Unskilled Workers[/paste:font]
Saying it's taking "full control" of its borders post-Brexit, the British government has unveiled an immigration plan that won't grant visas to unskilled, non-English-speaking workers — including those from the European Union. Officials also urged local businesses to "adapt and adjust to the end of free movement." While the opposition Labour Party called the new policy exclusionary, Home Secretary Priti Patel said it's aimed at attracting "the brightest and the best."

How will it work? In the Australian-style points-based system, immigrants will need to earn 70 points — 50 of which they'd get from speaking English and having an offer of skilled employment and an approved sponsor.
