Editor's note
Julian Assange finally gets his day in court in the UK this week. The extradition hearing to decide whether to send him to the US to be tried for publishing classified military documents is expected to begin today in Woolwich Crown Court.

Legal arguments will be heard this week and evidence will be presented in a three-week hearing in May. A decision is not expected until later in the year.

As Holly Cullen explains, there are many possible outcomes for the case, depending how the arguments play out in court.

Assange’s lawyers are expected to argue their client would not receive a fair trial if he is extradited to the US and that the case against him is politically motivated.

Pressure is also mounting on the Australian government to intervene with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson to block any possible extradition.

As Cullen writes, the possibility of appeals means the case could drag on for quite some time. And the threat of extradition will continue, unless the US withdraws the charges.

Assange's legal team is expected to argue the US extradition request is politically motivated and the Wikileaks founder is unlikely to receive a fair trial in the US.

Australian law says the media can’t spin lies – ‘entertainment magazines’ aren’t an exception
Andrew Dodd, University of Melbourne

The Australian Press Council's ruling suggests an exemption for 'entertainment magazines' from the standard of factual reporting. This ruling has no basis in Australian defamation law.

  1. Coronavirus-shutterstock_1622496262.jpg

    Coronavirus Strikes Iran, Italy
Outbreaks in Europe, the Middle East and Asia are fueling global fears that the virus is taking root far beyond China. An Iranian lawmaker said 50 have died in the city of Qom, though the Health Ministry disputes that claim. Meanwhile, Italy's now home to 150 cases — forcing officials to lock down 10 towns and cancel Venice's famous carnival — while South Korea's infections have jumped to 833. Back in China, authorities eased some emergency measures as the number of new cases continues to fall.

How are countries responding? Many have imposed travel restrictions for visitors from China or Asia, though the outbreak could pose entirely new policy challenges for a politically chaotic country like Italy.

  3. INDIA fortever getting COAL FROM AUSTRALIA doesent help Aus stance
  4. Trump Makes a Splash in India[/paste:font]
Prime Minister Narendra Modi rolled out the red carpet Monday for President Donald Trump's first state visit to India, a 36-hour tour aimed at shoring up ties between the two major countries. Addressing more than 100,000 people at the world's largest cricket stadium — his biggest rally crowd ever — Trump called India's story "a tale of astounding progress."

How tight are the two countries? Despite Trump and Modi lavishing praise on one another, they're facing an uphill battle in negotiating a trade deal that's agreeable for both nationalist-minded sides.

Read OZY's feature about Modi breaking India's diplomatic tradition.

  5. Bernie Sanders Stirs the Democratic Pot[/paste:font]
Is he berning bridges? Following his commanding victory in Nevada's caucuses Saturday, the Vermont senator is on a roll. That's forcing the Democratic Party to face the fact that voters are hungrier than expected for radical change — and also that its chances to defeat President Trump in November could dwindle if the firebrand becomes a shoo-in for the nomination. South Carolina's primary on Saturday, followed by Super Tuesday next week, will be even more revealing.

What's Sanders' next challenge? As OZY reports, it's crucial that he courts African American voters, who were the biggest factor in Hillary Clinton beating him to the nomination in 2016.

  1. Malaysia PM Stuns With Surprise Resignation[/paste:font]
Amid political turmoil over the role of his anointed successor, 94-year-old Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad stepped down Monday, throwing the Southeast Asian country into further uncertainty. The world's oldest prime minister had agreed in 2018 to transfer power to Anwar Ibrahim, though reports suggest he may have tried to renege on that promise this weekend. Anwar blamed "traitors" in both parties for plotting a political revolt.

What's next? Malaysia could face a new election if lawmakers can't cobble together a parliamentary majority of 112 members.

The latest:

China is hunting down its coronavirus critics using Twitter and WeChat

If you’re not signed up for this newsletter, change that by clicking this link.

All Jiang Ming did was tweet.

Replying to a post criticizing the Chinese government’s coronavirus outbreak response, Ming simply asked who would dare take the responsibility for abolishing a tyrant.

Within days, agents from the Ministry of State Security were knocking on Ming’s front door, waving a screenshot of his tweet.

Ming ended up having to sign a document saying he admitted his mistake and promising not to do it again.

This incident and others like it show how Beijing desperately attempted to stamp out communication about coronavirus when word about the virus started to leak out to the West.

Thousands of miles away, Wuhan native Joshua Left was just beginning his holiday in San Francisco. But he was so worried about the outbreak that he sent links to coronavirus updates to his family and friends back home.

Almost immediately he began receiving strange messages from several friends asking for his hotel name and room number.

When he rebuffed the questions, all the accounts quickly told him he should return to China instead. Then he got an alert warning him that someone was trying to log in to his account in Shanghai.

Left reported the incidents to the police and the FBI, but he is now in hiding in California, fearing that if he returns to China, he’ll be arrested the minute he lands.

China has shown it’s willing to go to great lengths to control the narrative around the coronavirus, so as it ramps up its propaganda effort at home, it is using apps like WeChat and Twitter to hunt down dissenting voices spreading information about the outbreak.

JAPANS new policy
eat less whale meat
we are sure thats the cause of that damn virus, duh

WHAT TO WATCH FOR TODAY
Japan announces its coronavirus policy… Prime minister Shinzo Abe’s government is due to release rules for both the public and businesses, as the virus continues its spread. The vast majority of cases involve passengers from the cruise ship Diamond Princess, and there’s some concern that their release was premature.

…and Hong Kong enacts a ban on travelers arriving from South Korea. Local residents returning home may still enter the city, but they’ll have to be quarantined for 14 days—the current recommendation by health officials. Those whose flights land before the ban becomes official will undergo rigorous testing.

The market could go either way. Customer relationship management company Salesforce may show an upward tick due to its acquisition of Tableau, and though Macy’s numbers will most likely not be reassuring, JPMorgan’s annual investor day could give some insight into the near future for the bank, which has continued to beat expectations.

WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING
The World Health Organization says the coronavirus outbreak is not contained. WHO still isn’t calling it a “pandemic,” but says the world should prepare itself for one. As Italy reported more deaths from the virus and the impact on the global economy began to become more clear, stocks took a dive.

Julian Assange began his fight against extradition to the US. Lawyers for the WikiLeaks founder told a London court that the US government is targeting Assange as an “enemy of America” and had considered kidnapping or poisoning him. A final decision could take years.

Harvey Weinstein was convicted. The disgraced Hollywood executive whose misdeeds launched the #MeToo movement was found guilty of a criminal sex act and third-degree rape. While he was acquitted on the most serious charges brought against him, he has been immediately jailed pending sentencing.

A driver slammed a car into a crowd during a carnival parade in Germany. Dozens were injured in the western German town of Volkmarsen, but so far there has been no loss of life. Police said the driver, a 29-year-old German man, acted intentionally, although his motives are still unclear.

Three people died in Delhi protests. Shortly before US president Donald Trump touched down for a visit, demonstrators who oppose India’s new citizenship law clashed with counterprotesters and police, leaving two Muslim civilians and a policeman dead.

QUARTZ DAILY OBSESSION
Leopard print spottings are on the rise.Throughout history, the fabric has been the preserve of royalty, the priesthood, high society ladies, and pinup models, but today it’s for anyone who’s bold enough to wear it. Coronavirus Infects the Global Economy
Stocks are sliding as the outbreak spreads farther afield, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropping more than 1,000 points yesterday for its biggest decline in more than two years. And there's little hope around the corner: On Tuesday, China reported 508 new cases, while South Korea — hit by a 15-fold increase in new infections inside a week — has now clocked 977, with 10 fatalities.

How far-reaching is the economic impact? The $45 billion cruise industry's taking a beating, with dozens of routes canceled and seven ports closed, but not all the news is bad: Videoconferencing companies are seeing a boost as more people work from home.

  2. That's a wrap. The global #MeToo movement scored a symbolic victory yesterday as a Manhattan court convicted the disgraced Hollywood producer of two sex crimes. "But I'm innocent," the stunned 67-year-old told his lawyers. Weinstein was cleared on two counts of predatory sexual assault, the most serious charges, and first-degree rape. He faces a minimum of five years — and at most nearly three decades — behind bars.

What's next? Legal analysts say Weinstein's conviction proves such "complicated" cases are now more winnable than previously assumed, potentially setting the stage for more to come.

  4. Following a flare-up in violence Sunday that saw several dozen rockets fired from the Gaza Strip into Israel by the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, the two sides appear to be sticking to a truce that came into effect late last night. The latest round of hostilities was set off after Israeli troops killed an Islamic Jihad militant believed to be installing an explosive near a border fence.

What's the bigger picture? The most serious exchange in three months comes a week before Israel's third elections within a year, and just as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is hoping to prove he can ensure Israeli security.

Jerusalem's 'green' cable car plan is challenged in Israel's top court

Rising across Jerusalem to the edges of the Old City, a new cable car plan that passes over the Palestinian territories has sparked controversy and is now being challenged in Israel’s top court.

The cable car intends to tackle intense congestion caused by tourism in the heart of Jerusalem, where millions of people come to visit some of the world’s most sacred sites to Christians, Jews and Muslims.

But infrastructure projects in the area are opposed by Palestinians, who see the eastern part of the city as their future capital.

“We’re talking about a city with dozens of layers and cultures connected to this city. The only way to live in this city is to appreciate its diversity,” says Yonathan Mizrachi, of a cultural heritage NGO.
