Deadly violence in Israel and Gaza raises concerns of war

Israel-Gaza
Israel carried out more airstrikes in Gaza, killing as many as 10 senior Hamas leaders and destroying a couple of high-rise buildings as the militant Hamas returned fire, sending a barrage of rockets at Israeli cities. Since Monday, 83 people have been killed in Gaza and seven in Israel. The fighting has triggered rioting in the streets and violent clashes between Arab and Jewish Israelis in several cities, with mobs destroying businesses, stoning cars and dragging people from vehicles and severely beating them.

COVID-19 outbreak in Asia and the Pacific
The International Federation of the Red Cross has warned about the surge of coronavirus cases in countries in Asia and the Pacific, pushing health systems to the brink of collapse. Over 5.9 million infections have been reported in the region in the past two weeks and many countries are also seeing their vaccination efforts hampered by shortages and costly logistics.

China-Uyghurs
Research by the Uyghur Human Rights Project has found evidence of imprisonment and detention of at least 630 imams and other Muslim religious figures in China’s Xinjiang region since 2014, under charges of "propagating extremism," "gathering a crowd to disturb social order," and "inciting separatism." In cases where information was available, court documents and testimony show harsh prison sentences, including 17 life sentences.

From The World
For pregnant women, getting the COVID-19 jab is a challenging choice

Credit: Charles Krupa/AP/File photo
Information on vaccines for pregnant women differs, depending on the country. Making the choice to get the shot while pregnant can get complicated, explains Valerie Fernández, who faced the decision herself in Arizona.

"In late April, I went to a vaccination site in Tempe, Arizona," Fernández writes. "As they were giving me the shot, I looked away because I’m afraid of needles. I held my breath and cried a little. In a second, I felt the weight of the world. Had I made the right decision? I was privileged to have a choice to make in the first place. But it wasn’t an easy one."

A decade of war has devastated Syria's health care system

Credit: Shirin Jaafari/AP
Sometimes, the most basic services are not available to patients. And it can lead to dire consequences. Only 64% of hospitals across the country are functioning, according to a report by the International Rescue Committee published last March. In addition, 70% of the health care workers have fled the country.

Why is the USA in such thrall of Israel?
Why did the USA block the UN vote on Thursday.
Anyone can see with half an eye that Jerusalem is slowly being cleansed of any Arab population.
Anyone can see the Palestinians are being moved of land which is theirs while Israeli "squatters" take over prime locations - the land grab.
And why does the Israeli government still think its above being investigated for war crimes.
The shelling and bombardment of Gaza and the strip is indiscriminate aimed at civilians and military alike.
When you have a populist leader out to make news he'll do anything to increase the size of his country and at the same time deflect the interest in his own trial . Don't let them tell you they are beset with terrorists because before1948 the Israeli's themselves fought as terrorist war.
Trump once said "there are good people on both sides" - there are also evil people on both side which is why its important that universally there has to be action to prevent the slow decimation by sanctions, restricted movement and freedom of speech that are as much a right for Palestinians as for Israeli's.
The much vaunted peach plan for the middle East was to divide and weaken, however with the recent actions that agreement seems to be on rocky ground.
Stop the bombing, stick to the borders, and yet even today is to late to heal some of the wounds opened up as hoards of nationalistic youths roam the streets thumping its all a good game.
Sop time for the USA, if it wants to show its still in world leader class, step up to the plate, take some affirmative action, stop sitting on the fence and delaying even a joint statement for the UN.

Soon after taking office in January, Joe Biden declared that "America is back." The US would "engage with the world again," and "move quickly to begin restoring American engagement internationally and earn back our leadership position."

That seems to be absent in Israel and the Palestinian Territories. This week the two sides clashed, stoking fears that they would escalate into a full fledged war. Finger pointing abounded.

Repeated US presidents have tried — and failed — to broker peace between the Israelis and Palestinians. Joe Biden, a seasoned foreign policy hand, knew better than to promise to try to end the conflict. Instead, on the foreign policy front, he has focused his energy on border issues, countering a rising China, reviving the Iran nuclear deal and global democracy. Indeed, as Joyce Karam noted this week, despite warnings that a crisis was building in Jerusalem, the US didn't flinch.

"The problem with being the leading superpower, still, is that you don’t have the luxury not to care or ignore an issue." Journalist and author Kim Ghattas tweeted that out this past week. The "MidEast has tendency to overwhelm/ encroach over everything," she said. That forced many presidents to focus too closely on the matter. The key is to strike the right balance on the matter, rather than de-prioritizing it. "Unless trajectories are changed, some things put on right track, region will keep dragging US down." (Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!)

The Biden administration has dispatched an envoy to the region. Biden himself has talked to Netanyahu, after which he gave a canned response that Israel has the right to defend itself. Fair enough. But does Israel have the right to evict Palestinians living in East Jerusalem? If the US had been engaged, it could have worked to prevent or, at least, deescalate tensions.

There is a long running debate about whether the US should be the world's policeman. If it wants to be the world's leader, then the answer is yes. (See last week's newsletter on with great power comes great responsibility.) As a leader, you don't get to pick and chose where to get involved. Washington has a long history in the Middle East. Now is not the time to turn its back on Israel-Palestine, most especially because "it's too hard." As Biden would say, "C'mon man."
-- Elmira

May 14, 2021 — This week at Undark MagazineView this email in your browoverwhelm the Texas power grid. Near Houston, a 75-year-old man froze to death in his truck; his family believes he ventured out to get a spare oxygen tank from the vehicle after losing electricity at his home. These are not just one-off tragedies. Some experts warn that complex home-based medical care is on a collision course with climate change, as severe weather events become more frequent nationwide.

While it’s difficult to attribute a single weather event like the Texas Arctic blast to climate change, reports Charlotte Huff for Undark, these crises have become more frequent in recent years as the planet warms, highlighting the need to protect such vulnerable people.

Also this week: There are currently no poisons that can be legally used in the United States against wild hogs, but not for a lack of options, reports Stephen Ornes. For nearly a century, scientists have investigated chemicals that can fell big, vertebrate pests — particularly feral swine. The animals have become a growing scourge across the country, with as many as 6 million of them causing enormous damage to crops, livestock, and native habitats from North Carolina to California and Texas to Florida.

And: Every state recognizes brain death, yet the issue is far from settled. For one thing, only about two-thirds of states have adopted the complete language of the Uniform Determination of Death Act. Beyond that, state-level court decisions and legislation have created a patchwork of rules, so that brain-death examinations are handled differently in different states. The result is that the fundamental concept of death depends upon where a person is located. Links to these stories and more below.

Israel-Gaza
As the humanitarian crisis becomes more worrisome in Gaza after nine days of airstrikes by Israel and Hamas returning rocketfire lobbed at Israeli cities, US President Joe Biden on Monday expressed support for a ceasefire, according to a readout of a call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. And while European Union foreign ministers debated ways to defuse the crisis on Tuesday, Israeli military officials suggested that there are thousands of targets left.

Cyclone Tauktae
The massive cyclone Tauktae made landfall Monday in the western Indian state of Gujarat, bringing heavy rains, a storm surge and winds of about 130 miles per hour — marking the strongest storm to hit the area on record. At least 12 people were reported dead before the storm hit, with four more killed in the state after landfall, and weather officials are warning of extensive damage, all while India’s health system is at the breaking point from a devastating coronavirus surge.

Ceuta
A record 6,000 migrants have jumped fences or swum onto the Spanish city of Ceuta, in North Africa. The large numbers of people have prompted Spain to deploy its military to the city’s Moroccan border on Tuesday, as officials described events as an “invasion.”

Many asylum-seekers are returned at the US-Mexico border under Title 42. Advocates call it a ‘sham.’

A bottleneck continues to build in Mexico near the US-Mexico border, as a public health order invoked by the Trump administration remains in place and shuts out many migrants and asylum-seekers from entering the United States.

"Once you cross the bridge into Reynosa, and you look immediately over to your left, you're going to see hundreds of people," said Rangel-Samponaro, who co-directs The Sidewalk School, a Texas-based nonprofit that assists migrants with schooling and other services in Reynosa and elsewhere on the US-Mexico border.

England indoor dining resumes, but where are all the staff?

Jon Super/AP
More than 1 in 10 hospitality workers in the UK have left the industry over the past year due to COVID-19. Between Brexit and the pandemic, owners are short-staffed, now that indoor dining is back.

Since the start of the year, EU workers have needed a visa to work inside the UK. Restaurants have been closed since December 2020, so it’s only now that establishments like Il Portico are feeling the impact.
