Counting the Cost - How is Russia financing its war in Syria?

Published on Oct 3, 2015
Russia has added a volatile new dimension to Syria's four-year civil war after unleashing a wave of air strikes across the country.Moscow has sent hundreds of troops, fighter jets, helicopter gunships, tanks, heavy artillery and other equipment, in response to a "request" by President Bashar al-Assad.Assad's regime has been teetering on the brink after a string of heavy losses to rebels and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), and the arrival of Russian troops is an attempt to stem the tide.President Vladimir Putin has allocated $60bn from a secret fund to accelerate the military buildup despite the country's struggling economy.Sanctions imposed by the West on Russia since March 2014, over its alleged support of pro-Russian rebels in eastern Ukraine, have cost the country some $40bn.Since then, its currency, the rouble, has slumped, oil prices have tumbled and billions of dollars worth of assets have left the country. So how is Russia able to finance its war in Syria?Igor Sutyagin, a Senior Research Fellow at RUSI, the Royal United Services Institute for Defence and Security Studies, joins Counting the Cost to discuss the money trail.Denmark slashes benefits for asylum seekersDenmark's rightwing government has slashed benefits for asylum seekers as it seeks to bring down the number of refugees entering the country.Under a new set of rules, asylum seekers without children will receive less than $900 a month in benefits, almost half the $1700 they previously received. This comes just weeks after Denmark placed advertisements in four Lebanese newspapers announcing tighter regulations and cuts by up to 50 percent for newly arriving refugees. So far, more than 350,000 Syrians have lodged asylum claims in Europe, and Denmark expects around 20,000 to arrive at its doors this year. The prospect of a better life in Europe has driven many to make the treacherous journey to Europe amid a conflict which has killed around 250,000 people. Marcus Knuth, Denmark's spokesman on Integration and Immigration for the ruling Liberal Party, joins the programme to explain why his government has taken such a tough measure.

First Labour to Tory defection. :D A former minister under Blair and Brown (he was Minister of Education and Minister of Transport) has resigned the Labour whip. He's now a cross-bencher, but he's accepted a job from Chancellor George Osborne, which makes him a semi-detached Tory. His name is :eek:Lord Adonis:oops:. You have to be British to accept a name like this without a double-take. He doesn't look like his name, but never mind.

I wonder who is next to defect.:)

Russian involvement in Syria is vital to save Assad from a war crimes court. It is also vital to save Russia's naval base and air base. The minimum requirement for both is an enclave around Latakia. Territory to the south - Homs and Damascus - may be secured by air cover from Latakia.

The rebels in the vicinity of this nascent Russian enclave are both anti-Assad and anti-ISIS. The West has been supporting them. Now Russia is destroying them. This will help both Assad and ISIS. It is possible that Russia and ISIS could reach some sort of accommodation.

The moderate rebel group in Syria that has had some success is the Kurds. However they really need Turkish support. The reality is the opposite. Turkey fears a break-away Kurdish region in SE Turkey and tends to oppose the Kurds. A plan B for the West was to see a strip of Northern Syria from Iraqi Kurdistan to the Mediterranean in moderate hands. This means Kurds would need to join up the gap in their territory (which Turkey opposes) while rebels in the Latakia region would need to triumph - which now just isn't going to happen.

Trans Pacific Partnership is going to cost lives: Maybarduk

Published on Oct 5, 2015
Peter Maybarduk, Director of the Public Citizen's Global Access to Medicines Programme, spoke to Al Jazeera from Atlanta, where the deal was signed."It's disappointing to hear White House scare tactics about China writing the rules instead what we are doing that we are letting American big businesses to write the rules and transform other countries' laws," he said."For medicines it is going to mean vastly extended pharmaceutical monopoly power, and that means reduced access to affordable generics and biosimilars. The deal gives pharma companies new rights to knock competition off the market allowing them priced any time they seem fit"We believe the Trans Pacific Partnership is going to cost lives.

Is the UK Labour Party in a death spiral? It appears to have been taken over by a mob of anarchists who believe that direct action trumps democracy, that austerity is always wrong, that the IRA should be honoured, and that it is acceptable for a mob to spit at conservatives and threaten them with rape. Anyone decent is now leaving the Labour Party. Back in the 1980s there were plenty who supported direct action and mass strikes - but not I think today.

When Brown lost the 2010 election the assumption was that the political pendulum would swing and that one day Labour would be back. Labour thought it was going to be 2015. Now the Labour grandees think 2020 and 2025 are already lost, so are they saying 2030?

Back in 1916 the Whig/Liberal Herbert Asquith lost an election. I don't think people realised then that the Whig party was as good as dead. It doesn't happen often but it does happen - political parties die. Is Labour dying?

Well, recently the US has *again* promised to help the helpless Philippines against the latter's sea dispute with China. Which would seem pretty good, on its face.

But then again I've read articles before that the US has been trying to strengthen its ties with China.

So yeah, I wonder who'll be at the losing end...

As Islamic State advances on Syria's pre-war commercial hub Aleppo, France says the vast majority of Russia's air strikes have been aimed at supporting president Bashar al-Assad, not targeting the terrorist group.
