The Truth About Poverty In Britain Is Much Worse Than You Think

article-2165867-0E26558900000578-169_638x423-400x265.jpg

Forty years after Margaret Thatcher came to power the true extent of neoliberal market reforms are still unravelling and inequality, as we are now hearing almost daily, has inexhorably taken a grip and harming society much more widely as a direct result with evidence of rising poverty its consequence.

The Equality Trust and High Pay Centre has average pay for UK workers calculated as £26,500. However, average pay conceals the reality for millions.

For instance, the top 0.1% are earning a few pounds over £1 million a year and the top 1% are earning an average £271,888. What this figure hides is the fact that the top FTSE chief executives are earning an average of £4.3 million and it takes them just 2.5 days to earn the average annual workers pay. These statistics do not include other successful groups such as self employed entrepreneurs.

Looking to snitch on your neighbors? Turkey will pay you for the info

Mukhtars are moving up in the world. Since President Recep Tayyip Erdogan moved to his controversial palace outside Ankara in November 2014, the mukhtars — elected heads of villages and towns — have become his prominent guests. They were the first group to be invited to the fancy palace, and Erdogan continues to receive groups of 300-400 mukhtars at a time.

Summary⎙ Print The Turkish government has hiked the pay of some elected leaders for providing intelligence about people in their neighborhoods.
Author Mehmet CetingulecPosted January 20, 2016
TranslatorTimur Göksel
There are about 53,000 mukhtars in Turkey. Erdogan plans to meet with all of them.

At the palace, mukhtars first hear a motivational speech by the president while their excited applause and standing ovations are generously carried live on television. After lunch, they return to their villages or city districts.

Why this sudden interest in mukhtars? Until August 2015, mukhtars were paid for simply drawing up documents about citizens’ residences and identities and then putting an official stamp on them.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has announced billions of dollars in special loans and investments in the Middle East as Beijing seeks to boost its economic ties and clout in the oil rich region.

Mr Xi offered China's financial support in an address to the Cairo-based Arab League after holding talks with Egypt's President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi during his first tour to the Middle East as president.

He arrived in Cairo late Wednesday from Saudi Arabia and will travel on Friday to Iran, the last leg of his three-nation tour.

Beijing has long taken a backseat to other diplomatic players in the Middle East but analysts say the region is crucial to Mr Xi's signature foreign policy initiative — known as "One Belt One Road" — touted as a revival of ancient Silk Road trade routes.

China, the world's second-largest economy, also relies heavily on oil and gas imported from the energy-rich Middle East.

Is New York City About to Ease Up on Petty BS Crimes?

new-york-city-cops-might-actually-ease-up-on-petty-bs-crimes-soon-1453396795-crop_desktop.jpg

Last April, City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito announced that she wanted to go easier on several low-level offenses in New York. Her list of bullshit crimes we shouldn't be sweating too much included urinating in public, making unreasonable noise, and hanging out in a park after dark. It might seem trivial, but according to a Daily News analysis at the time, roughly 2.7 million New Yorkers had been hit up for these kinds of petty infractions between 2001 and 2013.

This is the pure, street-level incarnation of "broken windows" policing, a popular model of law enforcement where so-called "quality of life" offenses are aggressively enforced in order (theoretically) to prevent larger crimes. And the result—at least, in Manhattan—is a bizarro-world criminal court that is running full steam at 1 AM on a weeknight. And there are over 1 million open arrestwarrants in NYC, mostly for minorities in low-income communities, for things like pissing in public a decade ago.

ARAB SPRING did it happen/not going to happen again ..

Egypt's media: Revolution and reality - The Listening Post (Full)

Published on Jan 23, 2016
Five years on from the January 25 revolution that represented the high watermark of the Arab Spring, Egypt's authorities and broadcast media in the country have been spreading a clear message: do not take to the streets.Last week, Egypt's authorities arrested five people who ran Facebook pages marking the anniversary of the revolution. According to press freedom groups, the number of journalists in Egyptian jails is at an all-time high. The bulk of the mainstream news media in Egypt aligned itself with President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi when he took power from the Muslim Brotherhood, but there are signs now that their wholesale acceptance of his rule is wavering.TV and print outlets are re-discovering their critical faculties on matters of governance, corruption and economic policy. However, there are limits to how far the government will allow dissent and those who cross the line risk much more than their jobs.Other stories on Our Radar this week: At least seven media workers in Afghanistan have been killed in a Taliban bombing in Kabul; in Yemen, a freelance reporter has been killed and a three-man crew from Al Jazeera Arabic has gone missing; Washington Post Iran correspondent Jason Rezaian has been freed after a year-and-a-half in a Tehran jail; and the veil is slowly being lifted on the mysterious story of five missing Hong Kong publishers. The 'Snoopers' Charter': Surveillance in the UKIn the UK, the government is in the midst of rewriting the country's laws on surveillance and national security through a piece of legislation called the Investigatory Powers Bill, or IPB - and journalists will be watching this story closely.Referred to by its critics as the "Snoopers' Charter", the bill is designed to pull together all laws regulating how the government, police and intelligence services can surveil its citizens, including journalists. The Listening Post's Flo Phillips reports on the relationship between the security state in the UK and the journalists who dare to challenge it.Returning to Egypt, five years ago, one of the anthems of the January 25 revolution was Ramy Essam's "Bread, Freedom and Social Justice".Since then, both he and his country have moved on; Essam has relocated to Sweden and Egypt now has another former military man in charge.Last year, Essam released "Beans are caviar", its message being that Egyptians, in their enthusiasm for the Sisi government, are mistaking a basic food staple for something of gourmet value.

Counting the Cost - Davos 2016: Tackling oil challenge and inequality trap

Published on Jan 23, 2016
In a world of social media and technology, networking has become commonplace. Once a year, the world's biggest and most powerful networking event, the World Economic Forum's annual meeting, takes place in Switzerland.Last week, world leaders met in Davos to discuss the biggest challenges facing the global economy in 2016: Crushing markets and currencies, the falling price of oil, global inequality, migration, the rise of technology, and the threat of another recession. So, what is next for the world's economy? Can another global financial crisis be averted? How can inequality be tackled? What does the low oil price mean for the future of Russia and the Middle East? And how can the world master the next industrial revolution? Angel Gurria, the secretary general of OECD, talks to Counting the Cost about the economic prospects for 2016 and what should be done to tackle the challenges ahead. He believes it is time for ministers and governments to go structural and to implement long-term reforms. We also talk to Winnie Byanyima, the executive director of Oxfam international, about Oxfam's recent report on inequality."Our report shows the pace and the scale of the crisis. We are showing today that 62 people own as much wealth as 3.5 billion poorest people - half of humanity. And that this has been increasing rapidly. In 2010 this figure was 288; last year it was 80; today it's 62, and in a few years time it will be just ten people owning the same wealth as half of humanity. This is dangerous, because it slows economic growth... it traps people in poverty and it sparks social unrest.... It's not inevitable and we are here to propose solutions and we are asking governments and business leaders to tackle it, and to tackle it urgently.... Thirty years of deregulation, of privatisation, of financial secrecy, of globalisation, has resulted in exactly this," says Byanyima.Global oil prices have fallen sharply over the past months, leading to significant revenue shortfalls in many oil producing countries, but what is really behind the falling oil price? And what does it mean for the global economy? We talk to Fatih Birol, the executive director of the IEA, who says the oil price has been the main topic in Davos."There will be more oil in the market... 2016 may well be a year where we see oil prices under pressure.... Low oil prices hurt the economies (the Middle East and Russia are hurt the most), but we should also see that this is not a price level which will be with us forever."Kirill Dmitriev, the CEO of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, talks to us about Russia as global international player. How does Russia deal with the low oil price and its international standing - and how has it affected business? He says, "it's a very big challenge for the Russian economy because it's very much dependant on oil, but .... it also creates new opportunies."Finland has been dubbed by some as the next sick man of Europe. Alexander Stubb, the Finnish finance minister, talks to us about unemployment, economic decline, structural reform and Finland's and Europe's economic future."There are colossal challenges for all of Europe, number one is migration and asylum seekers, number two is the euro and economy, and number three is basically terrorism and security. I think this is like a 1950s and 1990's moment for Europe. In the 1950's coal and steel was integrated, in the 1990s the Cold War ended and we went for the European Union. I think the answer to all these three crises is more integration, not less."

US, Turkey prepared for 'military solution' to Islamic State in Syria if politics fails, Joe Biden says
Updated about 8 hours ago

RELATED STORY: Russia, US say Syria peace talks expected to start 'in next few days'
MAP: Syrian Arab Republic
US Vice-President Joe Biden says the United States and Turkey are prepared for a military solution to Islamic State in Syria if a political settlement is not possible, amid uncertainty over scheduled peace talks.

Key points:

    • US and Turkey prepared for "military solution" to deal with IS in Syria if political talks fail
    • Kurdish political groups warn peace talks will fail if Syrian Kurds are not represented
    • US Vice-President Joe Biden says PKK is "equally a threat" to Turkey as IS
Mr Biden made the comments at a news conference after a meeting with Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu.

"We do know it would better if we can reach a political solution but we are prepared ... if that's not possible, to have a military solution to this operation and taking out Daesh," he said.

Daesh is the pejorative Arabic acronym for Islamic State insurgents who hold parts of Syria.

A US official clarified that Mr Biden was talking about a military solution to Islamic State, not Syria as a whole.

The latest round of Syria peace talks, planned to begin on Monday in Geneva, are at risk of being delayed partly because of a dispute over who will comprise the opposition delegation.

The Saudi-backed Syrian opposition ruled out even indirect negotiations unless Damascus took steps including a halt to Russian air strikes.

Mr Biden said he and Mr Davutoglu also discussed how the two NATO allies could further support Sunni Arab rebel forces fighting to oust Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

People and Power - Belarus: Europe's last dictatorship

Published on Jan 24, 2016
In October 2015 a presidential election was held in Belarus.

It wasn't a convincing contest and few thought that victory would go to anyone other than the man who had ruled the country for the past two decades. With an economy in tatters and a chilling charge list of human rights violations against his name, Alexander Lukashenko has long presided over Europe's closest equivalent to North Korea.

That said, the president many accuse of being a dictator eschews a personality cult. There's little need, say his opponents; Lukashenko rules through fear.

Today, time-warped Belarus provides a glimpse into what life was like before the collapse of the Soviet Union, where the secret police are still called the KGB and the success of the economy is measured in tractor sales.

In the run-up to the poll, filmmaker Glenn Ellis went to investigate the state of political freedom in Belarus, the reasons behind Lukashenko's apparently unshakable grip on power and the capacity of the country's embattled and suppressed opposition to fight back against overwhelming state repression.

What’s Really Going on with Oil?
By F. William Engdahl
Global Research, January 24, 2016
New Eastern Outlook 24 January 2016
Region: Middle East & North Africa, USA
Theme: Global Economy, Oil and Energy
oil-400x222.jpg

If there is any single price of any commodity that determines the growth or slowdown of our economy, it is the price of crude oil. Too many things don’t calculate today in regard to the dramatic fall in the world oil price. In June 2014 major oil traded at $103 a barrel. With some experience following the geopolitics of oil and oil markets, I smell a big skunk. Let me share some things that for me don’t add up.

On January 15 the US benchmark oil price, WTI (West Texas Intermediate), closed trading at $29, the lowest since 2004. True, there’s a glut of at least some 1 million barrels a day overproduction in the world and that’s been the case for over a year.

True, the lifting of Iran sanctions will bring new oil on to a glutted market, adding to the downward price pressure of the present market.

1017088530-300x162.jpg

However, days before US and EU sanctions were lifted on Iran on January 17, Seyyid Mohsen Ghamsari, the head of international affairs at National Iranian Oil Company stated that Iran, “…will try to enter the market in a way to make sure the boosted production will not cause a further drop in prices…We will be producing as much as the market can absorb.” So the new entry of Iran post-sanctions onto world oil markets is not the cause for the sharp oil fall since January 1.

Egypt: Is the media's 'Sisi-mania' waning? - The Listening Post (Lead)
Published on Jan 24, 2016
Five years ago, in January 2011, images of the revolution from Cairo's Tahrir Square that led to the fall of the Mubarak government were watched around the world. As January 25, 2016 approached, the Egyptian authorities put the word out and the media echoed it - that history would not be allowed to repeat itself. The message was clear: Do not take to the streets.Last week, five people who started Facebook pages marking the anniversary of the revolution were arrested, accused of supporting the now banned Muslim Brotherhood.According to press freedom groups, the number of journalists in Egyptian jails is at an all-time high. As Human Rights Watch puts it, we're seeing "a pattern of security agencies arresting people whose writings don't conform to official views".The bulk of the mainstream news media in Egypt aligned itself with President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi against the Muslim Brotherhood, but now that the organisation has been forced underground there are some signs that the media's 'Sisi-mania' is waning.Cracks are beginning to show, with both TV and print outlets re-discovering their critical faculties on matters of governance, corruption, and economic policy.Still, there are limits and those who cross them risk much more than their jobs. Our starting point this week - five years after the revolution that represented the high watermark of the Arab Spring - is Cairo.

Five years on, why do Egyptian authorities still fear January 25?
CAIRO — Five years after the outbreak of the January 25 Revolution in 2011, Egyptians are still dreaming of achieving the demands they raised during their revolution: bread, freedom and social justice. The successive governments and the current political administration have introduced major development projects aimed at gaining the trust of the people, yet the rates of poverty, unemployment, administrative corruption and the violation of freedoms continue to soar.

Syria talk invites go out … who’s in and who’s out?

WASHINGTON — United Nations Syria envoy Staffan de Mistura formally issued invitations on Tuesday, Jan. 26, for Syria peace talks that are due to start Jan. 29 in Geneva and last for six months, as the Syrian opposition, who are meeting in Saudi Arabia, signaled it would seek clarifications on the talks before deciding if it would attend.

Summary⎙ Print UN Syria envoy Staffan de Mistura issued invitations Jan. 26 to new Syria peace talks in Geneva beginning Jan. 29 that could last six months, while acknowledging that the relaunched peace effort is going to be uphill.
Author Laura RozenPosted January 26, 2016
In a sign of the tremendous strains on the fragile diplomatic efforts, de Mistura announced that the relaunched peace talks would not, at least initially, have the Syrian government and opposition delegations meeting in the same room, but would have diplomats shuttling between delegations in different rooms. In addition, because agreement could not be reached to include the Syrian Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD), among others, in the Syrian opposition delegation, de Mistura issued a third set of invitations to a dozen individuals and groups, as well as women and nongovernmental organization (NGO) figures, that Russia wanted included.

Noting the past failed Geneva II Syria peace effort, which collapsed two years ago, de Mistura said the approach this time would be different — by holding rolling proximity talks over six months and cancelling any high-profile opening ceremony.

US Planning to Keep Military Forces in Afghanistan for “Decades”

The US military plans to maintain a presence of thousands of US forces in Afghanistan for “decades,” unnamed senior US military officials told theWashington Post Tuesday.

“The US was supposed to leave Afghanistan by 2017. Now it might take decades,” unnamed US military leaders cited by the Post said.

The confirmation of long-term US troop deployments to Afghanistan has been prompted by the instability of the US-backed regime in Kabul, whose tenuous hold over the capital is threatened by insurgent forces including the Taliban, al Qaeda and ISIS, the US officials said.

Current Afghan President Ashraf Ghani is a US and NATO stooge imposed through a managed election geared to deflect popular hatred of the previous US- backed ruler, Hamid Karzai. Ghani was described by the US officials as a “willing and reliable partner” who can “provide bases to attack terror groups not just in Afghanistan, but also throughout South Asia for as long as the threat in the chronically unstable region persists.”

US officials added, “There’s a broad recognition in the Pentagon that building an effective Afghan Army and police force will take a generation’s commitment, including billions of dollars a year in outside funding.”

The US-NATO intervention in Afghanistan will also require “constant support from thousands of foreign advisers on the ground,” the officials said.

“We’ve learned that you can’t really leave,” an unnamed Pentagon official said. “You’re going to be there for a very long time.”

Iranians launch boycott of Saudi businesses

In Iran, a campaign to boycott Saudi products was initiated more than three weeks ago. The campaign, which was launched following a similar initiative in neighboring Iraq, was quickly joined by prominent Iranian actors such asRambod Javan.

Summary⎙ Print Following Saudi Arabia’s move to cut diplomatic and commercial ties with Iran, some Iranians have joined forces to launch a campaign against Saudi firms in the country — but is the boycott having any impact?
Author Masoud LavasaniPosted January 28, 2016
Javan posted the message “Never threaten an Iranian” on the messaging app Telegram. The phrase was famously uttered by Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif to European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini at a tense moment during the nuclear negotiations in Austria last summer.

The boycott campaign follows Saudi Arabia’s Jan. 3 decision to cut diplomatic and commercial ties with Iran. The rupture was triggered by the attacks on Saudi diplomatic facilities in Iran after Riyadh executed Shiite cleric Nimr al-Nimr Jan. 2.
