UpFront - Hans Blix backs Corbyn's call to scrap UK's Trident

Published on Jan 30, 2016
Jeremy Corbyn, UK's opposition Labour party leader, has called to scrap Britain's independent nuclear deterrent programme, Trident, angering many within his own party and prompting critics to question the effect it would have on the country’s national security. In this web extra, Hans Blix, the former head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) supports Corbyn's call, saying Trident is "a tremendous cost and very little gain".The former IAEA chief also says he does not think it adds to British security. "I think it's more a question of sentimental status seeking," Blix says, "They will keep their seat in the Security Council even if they do not continue Trident."

UpFront - Noam Chomsky: Latin America is in regression

Published on Jan 31, 2016
After more than a decade of left-leaning governments being elected to power across Latin America, some have now lost power, and others are now embroiled in political and economic crises.

Noam Chomsky, a long time supporter of Latin American emancipation, says that despite being in "a period of regression" it is the first time in 500 years that the region has "pretty much extricated itself from foreign control".

Chomsky also dismisses that the United States is reaching out to Cuba as "the way it's put in Western propaganda" pointing to the fact that the US "has been carrying [out] a bitter war on Cuba, a terrorist war" and that the Obama administration was forced to open up to Cuba as its position was becoming increasingly isolated in the hemisphere.

Syria Regime 'At Talks To Buy Time To Kill'

A Syrian opposition group has claimed the Assad regime has not come to peace talks to find a solution to the civil war but rather "buy more time to kill more Syrian people".

news.sky.com: Syria Regime 'At Talks To Buy Time To Kill'

However, the Syrian government delegation hit back, saying the opposition was "not serious" and insisted it wanted an "end to the bloodshed".

Delegation chief Bashar al Jaafari branded the opposition as terrorists backed by foreign powers, but said his government was considering humanitarian moves as demanded by the rival side.

The discussions are aimed at coming up with a ceasefire to try to end the five-year conflict which has claimed the lives of over 260,000 people and displaced more than half the population.

The blasts went off in Sayyda Zeinab, a predominantly Shia Muslim suburb.

Historic Day in Myanmar as New Parliament Opens, Ending Decades of Military Rule
By Reuters and VICE News

February 1, 2016 | 11:50 pm
Hundreds of lawmakers from Aung San Suu Kyi's National League of Democracy (NLD) were sworn into Myanmar's parliament on Monday, with enough seats to choose the country's first democratically-elected government since the military took power in 1962.

The NLD won some 80 percent of elected seats in November's historic vote, catapulting it to power as Myanmar's ruling party after decades of struggle that saw many of its members imprisoned.

Suu Kyi has waited decades for this day. The 70-year-old — whose father, independence hero, General Aung San, was assassinated in 1947— spent 15 years under house arrest after her government won an election in 1990.

But the new junta-drafted constitution means the party will have to share power with the army that for years suppressed, often brutally, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate and her allies.

The first sitting of the NLD-dominated parliament is another step in Myanmar's drawn-out transition, which started with the election and will go on until the NLD government officially begins its term in April after parliament has picked a president.

Inside Story - Who benefits from Iran's business boom?

Published on Feb 1, 2016
It has been less than two weeks since international sanctions were lifted on Iran.

And President Hassan Rouhani has wasted no time in seizing new opportunities, embarking on a trip to Europe in which he's signed billions of dollars worth of new business for Iran.

As leader of a country that's been isolated for so long, Rouhani probably knows the importance of a charm offensive.

And this trip, in which he's met French and Italian leaders, as well as the Pope, is also about restoring Iran's image and position in the world.

Rouhani says the visit marks a "new spring" in relations with Europe.

With European nations ready to cash in on Iran's return to the global economy, will money help restore Iran's position in the world?

And who stands to benefit from Iran opening up?

Presenter: Jane Dutton

Guests:

Luciano Zaccara - Research coordinator in Gulf politics in the Gulf Studies Center at Qatar University

Aniseh Bassiri Tabrizi - Research analyst at Royal United Services Institute. Aniseh is a specialist on EU policy and Iran

Inside Story - Is Myanmar's transition to democracy tainted by the persecution of Rohingya Muslims?

Published on Feb 1, 2016

More than a million Muslim Rohingya, who do not have citizenship, were prevented from voting in November's election. They are among the most persecuted people on earth. Hundreds were killed during violence between Muslim and Buddhist communities in 2012. Muslim-owned businesses and homes were burned.Since then, 140,000 Rohingya have been forced into refugee camps. Hillary Clinton Just Made History

Hillary Clinton is the first woman ever to win the Iowa caucus, the moment when the voters finally jump into America's presidential selection process. That's not something to ignore.

Tensions between Russia and Turkey continue to escalate following the downing in November of a Russian Su-24 fighter jet that strayed into Turkish airspace.

Author Semih IdizPosted February 2, 2016
Questions are being raised now whether the two countries are heading for a military confrontation. A leading Turkish military expert told Al-Monitor that such a Russian move could spell disaster for Turkey.

Turkey accused Russia of violating its airspace again last week and summoned Russia’s ambassador in Ankara to lodge a formal protest. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu also warned Moscow that it was playing with fire and would have to face the consequences.

Inside Story: Russia , Saudi ready to 'cooperate' on oil production?

Published on Feb 3, 2016
With oil prices plunging to their lowest levels in a decade, a deal between Russia and Saudi Arabia could take two million barrels a day off the market.Less than two years ago, a barrel of oil was over $100. Since then, it has fallen to around $30.That is the business story. But it is also a political story. The last time oil prices dropped so low and stayed there was during the 1980's, when the Soviet Union collapsed. Some Russians see history repeating itself. There is talk in the Kremlin of a US-led conspiracy and economic warfare by NATO.Fifty percent of Russia's government revenue comes from oil and gas. For every dollar fall in the oil price Moscow loses around $2 billion in revenue. It is not just Russia that is feeling the pinch.Saudi Arabia and other Middle Eastern countries have seen their revenues slashed, but with lower production costs have more margin for manoeuvre. The Trans Pacific Partnership, one of the biggest multinational trade deals ever, has been signed by ministers from its 12 member nations in New Zealand.

The ceremony in Auckland brings the huge trade pact, which has been five years in the making, another step towards to becoming a reality.

But the TPP continues to face opposition.

The 12 nations account for some 40% of the world's economy - they now have two years to ratify or reject the pact.

Australia's minister for trade Andrew Robb was the first to sign the pact. Those attending the ceremony cheered as his counterpart, New Zealand trade minister Todd McClay, added the last signature.

The Battle Between Oxford University Students and the British Empire
February 5, 2016 | 8:20 am
Oriel College sits in the heart of Oxford, a stone's throw from the British city's 1,000-year-old market street. Down the road is the site where the medieval Bocardo Prison once stood — and where, in 1555, a group of martyrs was famously burnt at the stake for heresy. Around the corner, heading north, is the Turf Tavern pub where, according to popular lore, former US President and Oxford University graduate student Bill Clinton "did not inhale."

Nigeria and Angola, Africas's two biggest oil producers are both in talks with the World Bank about support for their strained state finances.Budgets in Russia, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and Canada are in deficit, which means cuts in public spending.Big oil is cutting jobs and capital spending, in fact BP just reported its worst annual loss in 20 years and Shell reported a 80 percent slide in profits for 2015.But there are winners too: China, India, Japan, and South Korea are among the largest importers of oil so they are benefiting from the dropping oil price. We are backtracking the demise of oil - from production companies in the North Sea to a former Caspian Tiger fallen on hard times, Kazakhstan, to find out who are the winners and losers of the oil price drop and what it means for the people. Also on Counting the Cost: Ireland is now the fastest growing economy in the EU, but has its post-bailout success come at the expense of the country's poor? And how will it affect Ireland's economy and its people if its closest neighbour, the UK, decides to leave the European Union?Plus, after years of negotiations, the controversial Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA) has been signed at a ceremony in New Zealand. But sealing the deal on paper doesn't mean an end to the opposition, so what is the future of TPPA?-

North Korea has launched a long-range rocket carrying what it claims is an observational satellite, in a move United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon described as "deeply deplorable".

Key points:
  • North Korea launches rocket, in defiance of UN orders
  • US allies see rocket as a weapons test, North Korea insists it is carrying satellite
  • UN to hold emergency meeting
The launch was in defiance of United Nations sanctions barring it from using ballistic missile technology.

"It is deeply deplorable that [North Korea] has conducted a launch using ballistic missile technology in violation of relevant Security Council resolutions ... despite the united plea of the international community against such an act," Mr Ban's press office said.
