Political humor no joke for Turkish satirists

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s wrath at the media recently reached Germany, bringing Berlin and Ankara to a diplomatic confrontation over German TV programs satirizing the Turkish leader. Amid tensions simmering since mid-March, the Turkish Foreign Ministry summoned the German ambassador in protest March 22 and sent Berlin a formal request for the prosecution of a comedian for insulting Erdogan in a poem recited on a satirical TV show.

Portugal’s Example: What Happened After It Decriminalized All Drugs, From Weed to Heroin
As diplomats gather at the United Nations in New York this week to consider the future of global drug policy, one Portuguese official, João Goulão, will likely command attention that far outstrips his country's influence in practically any other area. That's because 16 years ago, Portugal took a leap and decriminalized the possession of all drugs — everything from marijuana to heroin. By most measures, the move has paid off.

A banner with the word "coup" is extended over supporters of President Dilma Rousseff watching the televised voting in the lower house of Congress over Rousseff's impeachment in Brasilia, Brazil, April 17, 2016. (photo by REUTERS/Paulo Whitaker)

The real reason some Turks are so quick to cry ‘coup’ in Brazil

On April 17, Brazil’s lower house of Congress passed a vote to impeach President Dilma Rousseff, based on charges that she violated the country’s budgetary laws. In return, both Rousseff and some of her supporters condemned this voteas an attempted “coup" against the nation's democratically elected president.

Summary⎙ Print When Turks comment on the "coup" in Brazil, they are actually speaking about Turkey.
Author Mustafa AkyolPosted April 21, 2016
Interestingly, more than 6,000 miles away, staunch supporters of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan passionately agreed with this interpretation of Brazil’s affairs. Various pundits of the pro-Erdogan media wrote hastened lines about "the coup plot" in Brazil and expressed "democratic solidarity" with the Brazilian president.

For instance, prominent pro-Erdogan columnist Hilal Kaplan wrote that “the coup in Brazil,” which was realized partly by the “big capital owning families,” must be a lesson for Turkey. Another commentator wrote a long piece titled “The coup has won, and Brazil has lost.” And a TV show used all of its airtime to report on “the coup attempt in Brazil and its consequences.” Meanwhile, on Twitter hundreds of comments in Turkish appeared about “the coup” in Brazil and how to defend democracy in the face of such challenges.

OIL

i hope you all suffer for years and years
in fact hope it never ever recovers ..
'failure of the Doha meeting'

Crude power: The oil game uncovered - Counting the Cost

Published on Apr 24, 2016
In an attempt to tackle the global oil crisis, OPEC and non-OPEC oil producers held an extraordinary oil summit in Doha, Qatar's capital, last week.

With the oil price still low and the market heavily oversupplied, 20 oil and energy ministers were trying to find a consensus on a way forward. But they failed to do so and the summit turned out to be more about regional rivalries than about finding a solution to low oil prices.

Mohammed Bin Saleh al-Sada, the Qatari energy minister, said after the meeting:

"The meeting concluded that we all need time for further consultation..."

In the end, Saudi Arabia wasn't going to agree to a freeze in production without the participation of Iran, meaning a deal was almost impossible from the outset.

So with nothing changing in Doha, the oversupply will most likely continue and the oil price will unlikely recover.

Why did the Doha meeting fail? Who are the major players in the game of oil?

Counting the Cost takes a look at where the global oil industry stands right now - from Doha and Saudi Arabia to Oklahoma, and to Azerbaijan. We talk to Spencer Welch, Oil markets and Downstream, IHS, about the game of oil, the Doha meeting and the issues behind it.

Also on Counting the Cost, we examine the Google anti-trust charges, the smartphone business and the undeniable truth that these devices are starting to run our lives. Georgios Petropoulos from Bruegel think-tank discusses Google's position in the market and David Richards, the CEO and co-founder of WANDISCO, talks about the mobile revolution and the future of the smartphone business.

And, the hunt for better trade routes: Arctic ice reached a record low for a second consecutive winter, so China is looking to exploit the Northwest Passage, the fabled shortcut through the Arctic circle. Along with a new economic corridor through Pakistan it's the Silk Road 21st century style.

Hillsborough Inquests Consign Lies To History

In the 1980s, many found it all too easy to believe the worst of football fans and the lies that were told about Hillsborough.

For 27 years the families of the 96 ordinary people killed at Hillsborough had hoped, occasionally prayed, and never given up striving for a day like this.

They never had any doubt as to the truth of what happened.

The survivors knew, too, along with a doughty band of campaigners and journalists, and any football supporters whose grim personal experience of 1980s football allowed them to see through the slanders spread by the police and amplified by sections of media.

I was presented with an example of people who didn't understand what taxes or a tax refund was. It was the typical uneducated drivel about how a "refund is not a refund" for whatever fantasy they can concoct. It appalls me that in the year 2016 there are still Americans who don't understand such basic levels of finance.
