Election 2016: Coalition loses seats but neither side can claim victory

A final result in the federal election is not expected for days.

At midnight AEST, the Coalition was on track to win 73 seats, Labor had 66, the Greens and Xenophon Team had one each and there were three independents, with six seats in doubt. Pre-poll and postal votes will now be crucial to determining the final result.

Malcolm Turnbull has said he is still confident the Coalition will win a majority, but Bill Shorten has said the Coalition has lost its mandate.

Did the UK media help make Brexit a reality? - The Listening Post (...

On The Listening Post this week: Did the UK media do their job before the EU vote? Has the tone of the coverage shifted since? Plus, the coverage of solitary confinement in US.

Did British media show Brexit bias?

It has been more than a week since the UK voted to leave the European Union and the story continues to dominate the headlines. But did the British media do their job before the vote? Were the facts sufficiently covered and were broadcasters as impartial as they are required to be? And has the tone shifted now that Brexit is a reality?

Talking us through the story are: Justin Lewis, a professor of Communications, Cardiff University; Natalie Fenton, vice chair of Hacked Off and professor of Communications, Goldsmiths University; Toby Young, a journalist for Spectator; and Craig Murray, author and blogger.

Beyond Brexit: What matters most to global economies - Counting the...

Last week, the European Union experienced the biggest shake up of the last few decades as Britain voted to leave the 28-nation bloc in an unprecedented move. Global markets were on a instability rollercoaster as the British pound dropped to severe lows, prompting emergency action from central banks in England, the US and the Eurozone.

The ripple effects of Brexit continue on through Europe and to the Middle East and even to China. We look at how the UK is reshaping its economy after Brexit and how the rest of the world is coping with the shift.

AUSTRALIAN ELECTION DAY 2016

We don't have an election winner, so what happens now?

The election is too close to call, Antony Green says. And that raises a lot of interesting questions.

Both major parties under siege as 'voter rage' takes hold

The day after the election nothing is resolved. Venezuela's state oil company says its revenues have fallen by forty-one percent in the past year. It follows a steep drop in global oil prices that has contributed to an economic crisis in the South American nation. The country's recession and triple-digit inflation has caused concern it may not be able to honour its large debts.

BREAKING NEWS
The NASA spacecraft Juno has reached Jupiter. It will orbit for 20 months searching for clues to the solar system's origins.
Tuesday, July 5, 2016 12:12 AM EDT

Ducking through intense belts of violent radiation as it skimmed over the clouds of Jupiter at 130,000 miles per hour, NASA’s Juno spacecraft on Monday finally clinched its spot in the orbit of the solar system’s largest planet.
It took five years for Juno to travel this far on its $1.1 billion mission, and the moment was one that NASA scientists and space enthusiasts had eagerly — and anxiously — anticipated.
At 11:53 p.m. Eastern time, a signal from the spacecraft announced the end of a 35-minute engine burn that left it in the grip of its desired orbit around Jupiter. Cheers erupted at the mission operations center at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, in Pasadena, Calif., which is managing Juno.

UK media: Going back on Brexit bias? - The Listening Post (Lead)

Published on Jul 5, 2016
It It has been more than a week since the UK voted to leave the EU and the story continues to dominate the headlines.

But did the British media do their job before the vote? Were the facts sufficiently covered and were broadcasters as impartial as they are required to be? And has the tone shifted now that Brexit is a reality?

Some media outlets, such as Rupert Murdoch's The Sun, were clear advocates of the 'leave' campaign, continuing to vocally support the decision post-referendum. Other outlets, however, are rethinking their headline choices. Whilst most 'leave' supporting newspapers were quick to condemn the EU not two weeks ago, many appear to have changed their tone.

Headlines warning of turbulent times and great change are now commonplace in British newsstands. So what does this mean for the vote? Was it indeed swayed by a fickle media mouthpiece?

Talking us through the story are: Justin Lewis, a professor of Communications, Cardiff University; Natalie Fenton, vice chairwoman of Hacked Off and professor of Communications, Goldsmiths University; Toby Young, a journalist for Spectator; and Craig Murray, author and blogger.

What i'm about to say might be a tad bit controversial but ISIS has been insanely effective.

I can't think of any other groups or any other movement that has been able to effect this many people in this many different places for this long a time and still largely not be blamed for it. They've pushed democracies into dangerzones, forced a country to commit financial suicide, scared a nation into arming themselves with the least effective weapons imaginable, changed entire political landscapes, modified the importance of issues such that most people are intellectually running in circles, put talks on infrastructure on the back burner, caused other more developed nations to further adopt their feelings towards women and gay people and in general effected the emotional (and then intellectual) stability of just about everyone.

All of this and they weren't even responsible for 9/11. They just piggybacked on the fear that was created during that time and modified it towards their needs. They were so effective that most people would rather target words then target them. Words. The intended consequence of that is of course they get to blow up and behead as many muslims as they want to because people are too damn afraid to attack them even on an intellectual level.

For a horrible, vomit inducing group of people...that is amazing. They have other groups of people, people who pride themselves on being tough....literally shaking in their boots with mere mention of anything having to do with them. So much so that people.....countries away will rush and buy guns to protect themselves from them even when...once again...they are so far away they would have to have super powers to get to them.

No one wants to be that person in the hypothetical scary movie who trips a man, woman or child so the monster can get them instead but ISIS has done just that. People are literally throwing other people in the way of the baddy bad only for the hope that it won't catch up to them. And that is simply amazing. Once again, ISIS or the threat of or the reaction to the reaction of ISIS has ripped apart democracy, alienationed a whole group of people (while making them massively vulnerable to both recruitment and murder in the process), thrown a monkey wrench into financial plans across the globe, allowed women/gays to become even more of a target globally and categorically taken humanity's eyes off the prize of advancement period.

People now have zero trust in their governments (and military) because of ISIS but somehow trust businessmen (with little to no experience i might add). It's all utterly amazing. One group of people. One. Effected the entire world. Meanwhile that very same world generally has no clue just how afraid they are. Generally has no clue just how much of their emotions are invested in freaking out and allowing businessmen to do and say some of the dumbest shit ever recorded or seen.

That's how powerful fear is. And they weren't able to just do this. No. They were able to because that fear was already there. Fear of losing control. Fear of losing rights when that fear was unjustified. The fear of losing money. The fear of losing respect. The fear of losing a country when it isn't even possible. I know i'm just ranting here but damn..ISIS has made the world collectively shit it's pants then somehow disappear behind a vale of their victims own stupidity. And the best part. The more people advance on that fear the worse they make the situation overall. The only logical outcome on that line being all countries end up beheading people and humanity in general turns back it's own historical clocks. Suddenly being stuck in the dark ages again.

So yeah i would love nothing better than for ISIS to completely disappear from off the face of the planet but at the same time i cannot deny just how grandiosely effective they've been in making just about every human being on this planet believe in a boogie man of one sort or another. Even when the devil is only in the details.

Greeks disillusioned with austerity measures

Published on Jul 5, 2016
It’s a year since Greek voters overwhelmingly rejected austerity, and limits were put on how much people could take out of the bank. But in that time austerity measures have increased, and controls on banking remain.

Greeks say they're not just exhausted by their economic crisis, they’re disillusioned, as John Psaropoulos reports.

Should Tony Blair be punished for the Iraq War? - UpFront

Published on Jul 8, 2016
More than a decade after the 2003 invasion of Iraq, the country continues to become increasingly unstable. On Sunday, nearly 300 people were killed in the worst bombing since the invasion began.

Led by the United States with the support of the British, the war paved the way for a violent insurgency and a sectarian conflict that continues today. Various estimates put the civilian death toll between 150,000 to more than 300,000.

The criticism surrounding the government's decision to get involved in the Iraq war led to a seven year inquiry by former civil servant John Chilcot, which was released earlier this week.

The long-awaited Chilcot Report found that the British decision was based on "flawed intelligence" and the invasion went "badly wrong". While the report stopped short of calling former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair a liar, Chilcot said that claims about Weapons of Mass Destruction were "presented with a certainty that was not justified".

So is Blair to blame for the Iraq war and its fallout? And should he and former US President George W Bush, the war's other primary architect, be punished for their involvement?

In this special episode of UpFront, we debate the Iraq Inquiry with two former members of Blair's inner circle, Clare Short and John McTernan.

It would seem that someone's getting the picture...

Read: Newt Gingrich's on-point statement about police violence and racism

"It took me a long time, and a number of people talking to me through the years, to get a sense of this: If you are a normal, white American, the truth is you don't understand being black in America and you instinctively under-estimate the level of discrimination and the level of additional risk," he said during a CNN interview Friday.

"It is more dangerous to be black in America," Gingrich said. "It is more dangerous in that they are substantially more likely to end up in a situation where the police don't respect you and you could easily get killed. And sometimes for whites it’s difficult to appreciate how real that is and how it's an everyday danger."

Now that is indeed powerful. I think someone is finally starting to understand things. Oh don't get me wrong. I don't believe him for a second. What i do believe is that he thinks if he lies about his feelings that black people may see the republican party differently. It's a good move. I mean the guy still thinks donald trump "is only candidate who has what it takes to kick over the table in Washington & get things done" but at least he's putting in enough effort to at least lie to try to get black people into the republican party. And thats powerful. It shows just how weak the republican/conservative party is without black, latino and etc votes. It shows just how desperate the party is for votes.

Seriously, if he didn't also back trump i might have believed it. Of course though, this is politics.

The Iraq war: Did Tony Blair deceive us? - UpFront (Reality Check)
Published on Jul 9, 2016
While the long-awaited Chilcot Report, released earlier this week, issued a damning verdict on Tony Blair's involvement in the British decision to invade Iraq in 2003, did we really need to wait seven years to realise this?
In this week's Reality Check, Mehdi Hasan argues that, even without the Iraq inquiry, there were clear examples of Blair's deception.
