During the brief time before the birds are weighed, identified, and released, he makes portraits—part Audobon-inspired art, part field guide—that allow us to study these beautiful creatures. “I want to create photographs that very concretely consider individual birds,” he says. “I definitely want people to empathize with these creatures.”
