Lebanon: Vintage posters offer glimpse of Arab history

One of the Arab world's most extensive collections of vintage film posters can be found in a cellar below Beirut's busiest shopping district.

The posters, dating back to the 1930s, are of Egyptian, Syrian, Iraqi, Palestinian, and Lebanese film classics.

What started as one man's childhood passion offers a glimpse into the Middle East's rich celluloid past.

Young human blood makes old mice smarter

Young human blood plasma can improve brain function in old mice — the latest evidence of the rejuvenating properties of ‘young blood’. Researchers infused plasma from human umbilical cords into the veins of old mice, and found that this improved the animals’ ability to navigate mazes. They also identify a particular protein in the plasma that may be responsible. (Read Nature’s 2015 feature on young-blood research: ‘Blood to blood’.)

Because Monkey is being rebooted in a new series called The Legend of Monkey, which will appear on ABC, TVNZ and on Netflix around the world in 2018. Production is already underway in New Zealand.

Inspired by the 16th century Chinese fable, Journey to the West, the 10-part half-hour series will follow a teenage girl and a trio of fallen gods on a perilous journey as they attempt to bring an end to a demonic reign of chaos and restore balance to their world.

In 1982, St Mary's Church was moved across Parnell Road to its present site beside the Cathedral.

[edit]

The Anglican church in New Zealand, today known as the Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia, was pioneered by George Selwyn who arrived as Bishop of New Zealand in 1841.

Moved Church of Most
This Gothic church was wheeled in its entirety to a new location a half a mile away.

The devout believe that faith can move mountains. The people of the Czech town of Most believed faith (with the help of some civil engineering) could move the entirety of the Gothic church at the historic center of their town to a new location about 2,755 feet away. And so they did.

Spectacular Aurora display not over yet

Aurora hunters were treated to an unusually intense and widespread display of the Southern Lights over the weekend, and it's not over yet, says Otago University astronomer Ian Griffin.

The Aurora Australis, or the Southern Lights, were spotted all over the country - and as far north as Auckland.

Dr Griffin - who is also the Otago Museum director - told Morning Report it was a particularly intense display in Otago on Sunday night.

"This was quite an interesting display, I saw mostly greens, but other people who have got better eyes than me were seeing reds, but the photographs showed all the colours much better and there were some lovely purples in there as well. So it was a pretty stunning display, all told."

This week's display was caused by a large coronal hole on the sun, said Dr Griffin.

Hello Nature readers,

Here's our pick of today's science stories.

New dog family tree reveals some surprises about breed origins (Matt Cardy/Getty)
Dogs’ life story, mapped

A genetic analysis of 1,346 dogs has helped create one of the most diverse maps ever produced tracing the relationship between canine breeds. The family tree shows how canines were crossed to create modern breeds, and hints at an ancient type of dog that could have come over to the Americas with people thousands of years before Christopher Columbus arrived in the New World.

POV: See Antarctica From the Back of a Whale

I caught my first glimpse of how whales see the world when I produced a video about humpback whales a few years ago. It was the first time I learned scientists could put a suction-cup camera (harmless to the animal) on a whale’s back to learn more about its behavior.

This video mesmerized me all over again, not only with a return to the whales’ watery world, but with the gorgeous views this journey affords. My favorite moment comes at 0:55, when the whale briefly skims past its own reflection before breaching the surface.

In a Fish-Eat-Fish World, Cannibalism Is Surprisingly Rare
A new study of cannibalism in fishes shows the behavior is much less prevalent than scientists once thought.
