While I don't pile the responsibility for social reform onto entertainers, it frequently just happens that they are the ones to help change attitudes. Comics, musicians and actors seem to have the public's ear and therefore have an opportunity to have what they say heard. Artists like the Disposable Heroes of Hiphopracy, and Tupac (amoung others) have made their mark in rap by elevating the form to open real dialog. Some of the "bitches and hos" stuff is funny, but a steady diet of it gets boring.

I think it's pretty degrading to women, actually. Shouldn't we try to promote music that doesn't put down people, whoever or whatever they are?

Ah, it's only degrading if you take that person' opinion seriously, I certainly don't. That's why I said I don't hold entertainers accountable for social commentary. If it happens that they use their position for that, it's great, but if they just do what sells and makes them money, I can't complain.

Offensive language is some of the funniest shit ever! You never laughed at a polish joke?

My favorite joke goes liek this: What's the difference between Jesus Christ and a picture of Jesus Christ?
.....
.....
.....
It takes only one nail to hang the picture.
The reason that's hilarious to me is because its blasphemous!

Overestimated his own abilities? Have you ever seen the vid of Eminem at the 97 rap Olympics? He came 2nd out of thousands of MCs. You know obviously know very little about him except for headlines.

Shamrock, I respectfully suggest that you may have misread my post. I think that if you reread it you will find that my only comment about Eminem referred to my cynicism about his "redemption" at the Grammys a few years back and my characterization of his P.O.V. as "hateful." And I stand by my right to be a cynical bastard toward multiplatinum-selling artists. ;) Sure, he has truly clever wordplay, and I respect that, but I still don't like him.

My comment about heralded, new-artist "geniuses" was in reference to Mr. West, with whose music I am admittedly not that familiar. I should mention that his selection of the talented Jon Brion as coproducer on this album speaks well of his tastes in my book. Who knows? I might love every note of it.

Give me socially conscious button pushers like Me'shell N'degeocello (who can use incindiary words for social commentary without being offensive, I think) or even Talib Kweli any day over these egocentric mainstream attention-grabbers.

Sure. A lot of people don't like Em. Thats fine. If you want to attack his messages, fine, but don't say he's got an overblown estimation of his own talent. Even Doctors of language and literature recognize his amazing ability with words.

See, now, I think we're miscommunicating again. I thought I just clarified that I hadn't questioned his talent or his own estimation of it. I think he's probably QUITE clever about how to keep his audience in his corner. Perhaps I'm still not being clear that I was talking about two separate people in two separate paragraphs.

And as for his skill with words, I believe I just posted this....

Guess what I do for a living, Sham? ;)

I am certainly not trying to bring anyone's gods down. I'm quite accustomed to being the minority voice when it comes to music. (twenty gazillion cd-buyers can't be wrong, right?) I'm a humorless bastard about it. But I completely respect and support the right of any adult to purchase whatever music he or she pleases. I also have the right to puncture the balloons of multiplatinum millionaires (hell, it's my duty!) and to disagree with what I perceive as irresponsible hatemongering.

Just my two cents.

Listen, man, I respect your point of view and am not trying to create a quarrel of any kind. Ask around--I'm as peaceloving as they come around here. :hi: I'm just trying to clarify what I said, what I meant, and what I had meant to say but perhaps failed to.

I'm not so sure that I agree. I think that maybe we or our roles can be degraded or, worse still, our lives endangered even without our consent. Films or songs that glorify or advocate gay bashing or porn that sexualizes violence toward women, for example, are not only offensive but potentially dangerous, I think.

I'm certainly not in favor of censorship, but I do see some types of things as irresponsible or even propagandist, especially given the percentage of nutcases we seem to have these days.

Hmmm....interesting topic.

Call, me an ass, but I honestly think Eminem's a chode. It's NOT that I don't like his persona, I think his writing is amatuer at best. I don't really care what "rap critics" say or these anonymous Dr.s of linguistics, I find them infantile. Now, I'll admit that I also like some artists who write stupid lyrics, just because I like something about them musically, or emotionally- that just isn't the case here. I'm not saying he is or is not "talented" because it really depends on what your definition of that word is, but I just have no use for him at all.

Are some song lyrics offensive? Hell yes! I think that as long as they are not directly advocating violence, there should be no bans on free speech. I vote with my money- buy what I want, pass up what I dont. Further, when I had a teen at home we TALKED about socially relevant subjects so I would know where her head was, she didn't have to rely on entertainers as role models! Pass this job off to the VERY unqualified, and all of society will suffer. Lazy parents who bitch about how other people aren't doing THEIR JOB good enough make me want to puke.

I'm not fond of Eminem, but I'll admit that his lyrics are better than many rap artists' works. Now about Eminem with Sir Elton: that proves nothing one way or the other about his alleged homophobia. Axl Rose is nothing if not a homophobe, and he has made no bones about it. He has confirmed his views of ass piracy in interviews. But he performed a duet with Elton John on a televised Freddie Mercury tribute. They did an absolutely awful rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody. I would've thought that at least Sir Elton would sing on key, but that was not the case. Axl Rose was asked that, given his outspoken views on homosexuality, if he felt hypocritical about performing with an openly gay artist in a tribute to another openy gay artist who died of AIDS. His response is that he respected Elton John's and Freddie Mercury's musicianship even though he found their sexual orientation repugnant. Oh. Since this is the LPSG, if anyone is curious about how Axl Rose is hung, let me just say that he performed Bohemian Rhapsody in his boxer-briefs (how classy! :eyes:): he didn't have a bulge ... he had what could only be called a 'bump'. His cock was clearly outlined in the boxer-briefs, and he had a little nubbin in there.

I personally didn't give a fuck, but shit like "I don't like that nigger shit" won't fly in an aesthetic rooted in black culture. I never bought this tramp's music besides the EP in 98, but this could have been the start of his decline.

For Vanilla Ice it was Arsenio Hall

For Slim it could have been this tape.

What is your definition of Homophobe? It seems to me that your description of Axl Rose doesn't fit with my definition of the word.
Obviosly he doesn't hate gays, he respects them as people, but only disagrees with their sexual practices. Whats wrong with that? Maybe some people don't think that a homosexual act is palatable, and it skeeves them out. Why do people have to wholly accpet a person's sexual appetite? If someone likes to have scat sex, does that mean that people shouldn't look at it as weird? And yes I am equating homosexual acts with scat sex, but only to make a point. To me, homosexual acts are not as repugnant as scat sex (lesbian porno really turns me on), but my point is that to some people it is. Everybody has different tastes. Why is someone labeled a homophobe just because they don't share the same sexual taste as yourself? Am I a scataphobe? I don't hold anything against those that like to eat shit when they have sex, they probably aren't bad people, I just wouldn't kiss any of them, or have them cook for me. It seems to me that Axl doesn't feel uncomfortable with elton john or freddie mercury, he does not hate them because of what they do in the bedroom, he simply does not like the thought. Whats so wrong with that?

So why can't "they" be as disinterested in OUR sex lives
as we are in theirs.

So the summation should be "it's OK to be gay, just don't DO anything?"

I'd say that for some people it would be "Its ok to be gay, but it still skeeves me out."
