There is a sound, but nobody can hear it. So the question here is actually about the definition of sound. Is there only sound when somebody can hear it, or not?

I believe there is... you could easily measure it with some kind of equipment. Even when nobody is there, the equipment does notice the sound.

Of course there's a sound. Physics tells us that unless that limb is falling in a vacuum, there will always be sound whether anyone is around to hear it or not. Note that the original question does not specify if anyone is around to hear the fall or not.

Read... PONDER.... (this is so trippy, dude)

And pass me the LSD please.

After the tree falling in the forest question gets played out, maybe we can all discuss the chicken and the egg once the acid kicks in.

People who live on communes and take mind-altering psychedelics will tell you there are 7 distinct tastes in a single grain of rice. ----

Please excuse me, everybody. I am off to buy organic carrots, a Jefferson Airplane CD, and wool for my loom.

That has been proven. The egg came first. Chickens are descendants of dinosaurs. And dinosaurs came from eggs. Of course it didn't go dinosaur-egg-chicken. It's a process of millions of years. But there you go...

The falling tree branch creates enough sound waves to be heard as sound if there were any nearby ears, but there aren't any ears nearby, so there is no sound.

Now, if Smarttalk is on a plane that leaves Heathrow westbound at 500 mph at the same time that Pecker leaves Kennedy on an eastbound flight at 400 mph, when will ...

Nick8: Are the voices in my head bothering you?

--------------------

The voices aren't bothering me... but my next-door neighbor's dog is going bananas. Apparently the voices in your head are operating on the same frequency pitch as his ultrasonic dog whistle. Put some tin foil around your skullcap; that should dull the vibrations.

They argue. Quite frequently. Several layers of terrycloth usually serves to dull the pain.
