Hey there,

I love just lazing in a steam room or sauna after a workout to unwind, but I never really did it strictly for any benefits.

Does anyone have a routine they follow? Like ten mins here then shower then ten mins there?

Just curious!

There used to be one in East London (UK) called York Hall at Bethnal Green - they had sauna AND steam room, and you could always get a massage in the steam room, but a few years ago the local authority sold it off to a "Leisure Group" and ponced it up for all the Hooray Henry's that went to live in the area with their Charlotte's and the area became gentrified - so that was the end of that.

If anyone knows of anything similar in East London now, I would be grateful to be told about it - a lot of smaller saunas went out of business during the lockdowns of 2020/21

@Thinwrists has the key!
Heat, cool, repeat as wanted, ending with cool.
If I’m alone in a steam or sauna, I’ll stretch.

I’m a licensed massage therapist, and I imagine receiving work in a very warm room would be fabulous. Giving work, too, but I already overheat working.
I’ve contracted with places with far infrared sauna, and loved working on clients who had just had a session.
The only benefit of working there was unlimited sauna use. Daily on work days!
I would set the timer for 15 min, cold shower, 20 min, cool shower. when I had more time, I’d add another 15 min round.
Traffic didn’t bother me going home!

In the States, smaller saunas are gaining popularity. Things an acupuncturist or massage therapist or cosmetologist can install, good for 2-3 people.

I wonder if that might be true as some places reopen?

my gym has a sauna, steam room, pool and hot tub all in one area. and I guess from what I overhear, some like to time it out on their phone or watch and do 15 minutes in the sauna and 15 in the steam room. but ive seen some guys stay for an entire hour, switching between the the sauna and steam room and then taking a slow and long dip in the pool after. But I like to sometimes do long distance laps in the pool and then relax my body in the sauna for a few minutes.

I've noticed the benefits when I started with a new facility in March this year. I've went to the YMCA for many years, even though they only have dry sauna (no steam room), I wasn't comfortable as this was co-ed (male and female) allowed.

After COVID-19 shut down, I went for nearly 1 year without doing any working out at the gym. My body started to losing away the muscle toned that I've gained.

I joined a different fitness center, a privately owned, not a franchise one, where mask wearing is an option, as long as you're keeping 6ft from another person when working out. This one has all male dry and steam saunas. I went in weekly (3 day/week). After done my workout, I would go into dry steam room first, until I sweat out, went to shower, soaked in the whirlpool to relax for awhile, then into sauna (wet) room after that. After 6-month, I noticed my body get really toned up comparing to 1 year without the addition of steam and dry sauna. In addition, my workout at the new fitness center was cut down to 15 minutes less than I normally do when at the YMCA.

The cost at the new fitness center is much more than at the YMCA, but worth the time I spent there. Now that my body is nearly back to where I was pre-COVID, I'm thinking of switching to a cheaper fitness center, just to see if I can just maintain what I've now.

Few years ago I was in a sauna with a guy who passed out. I had to hit the red button and help to get him out. He came round ok and it turned out he had just been in there too long. There are a few misconceptions about what saunas and steam rooms can do for you. You may lose a few pounds in excess water in the body through sweating but when you later rehydrate this goes back on. Body fat has a much higher melting point than a sauna can produce so you won't lose this. Short, 10-15 minute spells, are the safest.

How long should a cold shower last?

I go in for about 10 minutes to steam, I shower, and then if nobody is sauna I will dry off in there but rather quickly so as to not break a sweat. Otherwise I have to dry off in the shower room, but I prefer the warmth if the sauna given I am already wet.
