I just noticed "Reagan" is misspelled in the thread title..................Kind of say something about the poster and his immediate next two supporters. Not judging just an observation.

Actually, I just accidentally left the "a" out of Reagan. Sorry to burst your bubble but there's no hidden agenda here.

Come, come now...
If you're going to dig the man, his legacy and everything he stood for out of his grave to exploit for your enjoyment and posturing, you should at least spell his name right!!!

Jesus Christ, I made a mistake and left a letter out of his by accident. You fuckers will argue about anything won't you?

What I posted was actually sent to me by a friend and I posted it here. Some of his quotes I like very much and think he hit the nail on the head, others so-so. I don't worship him or any other President or man for that matter as some posting on here seem to do. If you liked the man fine if you don't so be it I really could care less.

Noticed that nobody was jumping in to give reasons why Reagan is so awesome, other than irrelevant "he was funny" shit that you would expect from an actor elected president.

Dismantled USSR
  • Took country from economic stagflation, high inflation, high interest rates...to job growth, thriving financial markets, economic expansion (created 17 million new jobs; also inflation dropped under 5%)
  • Iran hostages freed upon his election and before inauguration
  • Fostered Americanism, united country
  • No countries fell to Communism during his terms
  • Cut taxes
  • Rebuilt the military
  • Saved the republican party after Nixon
  • Overwhelming popularity
  • relations with Gorby led to fall of Berlin Wall
the list goes on and on but these are a few of the highlights

the list goes on and on but these are a few of the highlights

  • Ran on platform of racism, continued in office
  • Made up story of "welfare queens", as coded dogwhistle for "minorities"
  • Support of brutal military regimes in south and central America
  • Completely ignored HIV, allowing it to spread massively
  • Massive pro-business deregulation
  • Massively increased the national debt(more than doubled it)
  • Helped break the back of labor for decades
  • Supported Saddam Hussein
  • Iran-Contra whoooops
  • Worthless Star Wars program
  • Supported Apartheid in South Africa

I bet I can make my list longer than yours, and I don't have to pad it with "fostered nationalism" and "he was really popular"

My God man what is it with people and their false beliefs. I am beginning to think that to be a leftist on this board you have to completely ignore history and facts.

Made up story of "welfare queens", as coded dogwhistle for "minorities"

Actually he didn't make that up and it has been proven so. Also I grew up in California and during that time a welfare recipient using all of the programs available to them would get in cash and cash equivalents more money than 53% of working people. Everyone knew somebody that was living on welfare and doing so quite comfortably.

Second point is a welfare queen has no racial status attached to it, only people who are inherently racist would think so, that might say something about you more than Reagan.

Support of brutal military regimes in south and central America

Actually the regimes he supported were far less brutal than the ones they replaces. In this case it's the idea of being for extremely bad or just bad. Reagan chose bad, I take you would chose the extremely bad?

Completely ignored HIV, allowing it to spread massively

This is so monumentally false I don't know here to begin. During Reagan term spending on HIV was huge. It was the fastest that the government had ever reacted to a new virus like this, plus they spent more money on it than anything else in the past. To say otherwise is simply tripe. LOOK up the history.

Massive pro-business deregulation

Massive huh, actually there were only a few industries that had de-regulation but many more that had more regulations placed on them. Again rather than spewing a talking point look up the data. Regulation went up overall under Reagan not down. That's verifiable.

Massively increased the national debt(more than doubled it)

He did, a trade off with Tip O'Neil, the Dem's get much more funding for social programs and entitlements and Reagan got his increases in defense spending and his economic stimulus package through. A deal with the devil as he called it and was never happy about it.

Helped break the back of labor for decades

Labor was already in decline the only thing he did was to stand up to the air traffic controllers. You do know that many of those guys make over 100K a year, no offense, I know their jobs are important but that seems a little high especially when you consider the incredible government benefits they also get.

Supported Saddam Hussein

He did, I take it you were a big proponent for the Iraqi war and the removal of Saddam Hussein then?

Iran-Contra whoooops

Iran-Contra has risen to legendary status with people, most of them cannot even give you the basic facts behind it. But one thing is clear even Lawrence Walsh admitted that he had no evidence that Reagan knew of or was involved with it. Nice try.

Worthless Star Wars program

Hardly worthless, it caused Russia to spend tons of money to enlarge their already installed missile shield over Moscow to cover the whole country. Many of the technological advancements from star wars have benefited our soldiers.

This is really a case of talking points (sounds like from Will Bunch) vs reality, Reagan had faults as all presidents do, but to spin it this way is the work of extreme ideologue and brings nothing intelligent to the table.

Well, he WAS in favor of the Star Wars program...

the USSR tried to keep pace with the U.S. in the arms race and it have the finances. It broke the Republic. It is indisputable.

Reagan played them like a fiddle. He knew exactly what would emerge from that...and in the end, they crumbled, and we were equipped with a defense system that catapulted the U.S. to an unprecedented competitive military advantage.

All the while, our economy, our job market, our financial markets thrived at a level not seen since the roaring 20's.

I would pay 70% taxes to have Reagan back today.

Just out of curiosity, how many terrorist attacks were there during the Reagan years?

Exactly. He would not submit to terrorist blackmail, and made that message known worldwide. Those who challenged it were destroyed. Without hesitation.

We were safe. We were free to live our lives as those before us had hoped.
Our country was thriving, free from terrorism, free from fear.

Now, we are led by those that not only submit to terrorist blackmail, but we walk them down a red carpet to an attorney. We scream and wail for the rights of those that mean us harm. We shrug off the deaths and murders of our own countrymen, so that murderers and terrorists can receive due process without disruption.

Too bad we are losing our country to people that don't give a damn about the sacrifices of those that secured our country in the first place.

'Give me liberty or give me death' has been replaced by 'give terrorists liberty or give them a latte'
