I miss Pasquini's Pizza in Pleasantville, NJ. From 1959 to 1975, the family from Italy made the best pizza that I've ever had in my life. The good thing: their Uncle Bruni sold his pizzaria in Hammonton, NJ to a young couple, and it is still the authentic Italian pizza that the Pasquini - Bruni family made for decades. The bad thing: It's 3,000 miles away from San Diego!

There is also White House Sub Shop on Mississippi and Arctic Avenues in Atlantic City. Their submarine sandwiches will spoil you and you'll never be happy with your local subs.

Both of these places are HIGHLY recommended for anyone traveling to the Southern New Jersey area.

Oh I miss Tastykakes too and Drakes cakes. It's all Little Debbie here (cheap but always has an odd artificial taste). Sometimes stores don't even sell Hostess products here.

Two Publix stores, and one Winn Dixie on Ives Dairy Road carry Tastykakes. I hate Drakes, so I don't know if they have that. I didn't notice Little Debbie Either.

The Publix you pass before the K mart on the way to Haulover Beach (cannot think of the name of that street right now) also sometimes has Tastykakes, as does the Publix on Biscayne Blvd in Midtown Miami.

I have a recipe which compares well...

I miss jerk chicken. I also miss roti. I liked mine with goat. Even where I'm from, the place that sold the really good roti went downhill some time while I was a vegan. When I fell off the wagon, the roti was never the same again. I just found the Jamaican neighborhood here last week. I might be in luck of some jerk.

I miss Greek fast food. Greek fast food here sucks. What the fuck is in these people's falafel? It that really tzatziki on the gyro? It smells and tastes more like ranch dressing with extra vinegar. Unacceptable. And here, a gyro platter doesn't come with fries. No fries! It costs a dollar more, but the difference is your pita comes in 12 slices you can't use, swimming in that mockery of tzatziki sauce, and you have to build your own damn' mess out of that. Rude!

The pizza in the condemned gyro place isn't too bad though. The crust needs something, (like less time in the oven for starters) but it's not bad. I would much rather have pizza from Nick's, back in the Bronx, on East Gun Hill Road. They were open all hours, always delicious, and traded me free pizza for cake and cookies.
