Great post.

I couldn't disagree more.

It is meaningless to use your own scripture to prove/support your ideas that come from those scriptures. It's self proving and therefore irrelevant to any argument.

The Times is the best newspaper because I read it in the Times.

I like Dong's logic.

JA, I believe you are working on software. Are you intending on launching your product without instructions or a user's guide? and won't you have user support?

Who creates or makes anything and hopes that someone else will develop the user's guide?

One of two conclusions; either there is no God, or if there is, we don't register on their radar.

JustAsking, please grant me permission to steal liberally from that exceptional post. It will prove useful in a discussion I'm about to hold with a believer friend.

And thank the goddess that you have an issue with your genitalia, or you wouldn't be amongst us sharing that wisdom!

Oh sure, I accept what you are saying. My quoting from the Bible is not proof to a non-believer. So this is no way to win a debate. But as a believer, I have a choice between making stuff up or calling on the great body of theology that comes from people interpreting the Bible. As a mainstream denomination Christian, I believe that we know very little about God except that what is revealed to us in Jesus as transmitted to us through the Bible. It's the only thing I got, actually.

Actually, I sorta posted this in the wrong thread. I was bouncing back and forth between this one and the Questions For God thread. And as a response to jason_el's very Job-like theodical lament, I offered up the point of view of modern Christianity on the subject as derived from scripture.

But if you don't accept the book itself as God inspired, then naturally its not much of a "proof" and might even look like nonsense.

So from your point of view, I say yes, my logic is circular. It basically says the Bible says "xyz" and as proof I will quote the Bible.

HB,
Yes indeed. Please rip this off liberally and use it for whatever case you want to make. Especially if you are debating believers who believe bogus stuff about how God has a plan for them personally, and how God will keep them safe from harm and make them rich and happy.

Yes, I may have come for the genitalia, but I have stayed for the great discussions.

I find that almost as useful. Even if you are not a believer, I would hope some of this at least demonstrates that people have found great wisdom in the Bible, especially when they stop interpreting it literally and actually read it.

So you don't have to believe what I am saying, but it would be good if you saw what Christianity has to say about its own big theological challenges.

For example, it would be useful to know that most of the major mainstream denominations think that you will get to heaven by good behavior or good deeds.
Great post.
Danke.

Please dont take this as religion bashing but i dont believe in that bible as a infallible moral guide either. For example in the old testament and in the new testament slavery is morally acceptable. Jesus dont say something in favor or against slavery but Paul accept slavery as a good thing in the new testament. For that reason for centuries many christians own slaves and this people werent seen as bad persons by the community. In the old testament god demand animal sacrifices, to me that is is barbaric.
I respect your views because you seem like a sincere christian. Keep writing great posts.
