RENT is one of the best shows I've ever seen, actually! I own the soundtrack on CD and listen to it at least once a week still, even after four years. I myself have seen the show four times, which isn't too shabby for someone living in a town like Bismarck, ND. :D

I highly recommend getting the soundtrack to listen to, though. It can be really hard to understand the actors while they're singing and the entire plot is advanced through song. I didn't have a clue what was happening the first time, but yeah, that's my story. I'll stop rambling and get to work now!

I lived in NYC during the initial heyday of RENT...
    Like most megasuccessful shows,
    i become skeptical...
    "It couldn't be *that* great"....
and similar thoughts come to mind.

    My ex loved the CD,
and wanted to go for his birthday, so we did...
I really was just going to please him.
    Dont get me wrong,
    I"m an actor,
    and I love theater....
    I just thought..."some rip-off of LA BOHEME"...

    Well,
    I loved it.
    I really did.
    It is a wonderful show.

    One funny thing...
    when i saw BOHEME
    at NYCOpera, later that season,
a teenager turned to her mother during
    intermission and said,
    "this is RENT!!!!!"

    Yes, it is...sort of. :)

Dissenting vote here, but I've never been able to tolerate most 'theater' or show tunes or musicals or similar stuff. I went to Rent on request of friends. During the song about not being able to afford the rent on their flat, I wanted to shout, "So get a job!" I left during intermission. No explanation for why it holds no appeal for me.

Sometimes I think you just try to act the exact opposite of the stereotypes. LOL

Seriously, I don't like musicals that much either. Oh, here's one anyone'll enjoy:

It puts the lotion on its skin it does just what it's told
It puts the lotion on its skin or else it gets the hose
And when it's done there's one more thing a simple little task it's
Put the fucking lotion in the basket
