If we wind up with a double dip recession, we'll certainly know why... Congressional Republicans are doing everything they can to ensure that's exactly what this country winds up with.

In other words, they want people to fail. Funny how when some people said this over a year ago, they vehemently denied it. Oops!

Too bad many people are starting to realize the individuals who are causing the problem, and despite the mass majority of the GOP dropping the ball constantly the resentment does goes across party lines. Those who think it's all because of one particular group will be in for a rude awakening come November and in 2012.

Unfortunately your average 'low information' voter will blame the democrats.

And where oh where do we get the funds to extend unemployment benefits. Perhaps plant a moneytree in the courtyard at Congress?

^ If it's any consolation virtually all that money gets spent immediately, providing direct stimulus to and a ripple effect throughout the economy, because most people can't really afford to sit around on their lazy asses for $1,200 per month.

that's great but who pays back the gov't coffers? Sales tax is only about 6% of those dollars that are being circulated into the economy.

I once had a girlfriend that spent like this Democratic Party. She filed bankruptcy. A couple times.

"I once had a girlfriend that spent like this Democratic Party. She filed bankruptcy. A couple times." What was his name? They might stop one of Zippy's unnecessary wars that would free up some cash.

So let's say voters bite and vote the GOP back into office. The bright ideas will magically come then? Or is this all just a bit of political theatre where the aim is simply to get into power?

This has been the Republican strategy since the moment it became clear that Obama would win the White House. Dig in your heels, become as intractable and as implacable as possible, bring the country to a virtual legislative standstill and blame it on the Democrats. If the economy can tank even further--jackpot!! A mere four years wasted and the White House regained.

There's nothing so motivating and compelling as self-interest.

Causing your own economy to tank without any real strategy or ideas about how to recusitate it doesn't strike me as self-interest...As Mugabe discovered, being the king of a molehill doesn't amount to a can of beans

Let's not lose sight of who set us on the road to ruination for starters. The amount of money being spent on unemployment benefits is a drop in the budget bucket compared to other budgetary excesses, and well spent imo, if it prevents more people from losing their homes, falling through the cracks, and ultimately being dependent on a (nonexistent) social safety net. I say this as someone who is self-employed, has never been able to take advantage of this backup plan during "dry patches", and who could therefore feel resentful.

Money is to a large extent abstract anyway, based on a promise to pay down the road. Having said that, I do think that deficit spending is a HUGE problem that must be addressed in the next few years (other countries need to address this as well). We can't continue kicking the can down the road. Otherwise, we will mortgage future generations to the point where the government will be able to do nothing but pay interest on the debt, and that is no exaggeration. Medicare and Defense spending are the big elephants in the room, and to a lesser extent Social Security.

But remember Doll, you and I have agreed not to discuss economics.

Don't be silly. The Republicans are just holding all their brilliant ideas in abeyance, waiting to put them into practice when they regain power in 2012.

That is all it ever is for both parties! Just theatre for the masses. The last 3 elections have been nothing but choosing the lesser of 2 evils. I hate to say it but I havent voted for a candidate i liked for 14 yrs. It has been a constant flow of political refuse. why? Because good, honest, free-thinking people avoid politics like the plague.

Again!! this is the continual position of the minority party in any of the past administrations. It's just that we are now bombarded by the 24 hour news networks. THIS IS NOT NEW!! All parties play these games.

^ Oh yes, the old "both sides are the same, both sides are equally to blame" argument.

Somebody else want to take it on this time? I'm tired.
