I just read that there will be a new standard for swimsuits in the World competitions. They are returning to the "old style" as of next year. Phelps is set to use the "old style" this year to get used to it.

Thank goodness!! I think those new ones are actually more obscene than speedos are!

Competition doesn't mean they're gonna show up on the beach!

    I'm glad too.

I wonder how many medals Phelps would've won if he had played by Mark Spitz's rules.

The body suits, the wave-absorbing lane dividers, the extra-deep, guttered wave-eliminating pool.. of course records were broken left & right.

Who said Speedos are obscene? It's the fat type bodies that sometimes wear them that are obscene.

Well, let's hope. At my pool, speedos are, on the whole, worn by older (40+) guys, who have no body hangups, and were probably brought up to wear speedos as the only kind of swimwear (and yes, some of us are a tad overweight, nicecircjob). The younger guys usually wear huge baggy shorts - down to the knee or beyond. (One recently was wearing a pair of 3/4 length cargo shorts - all pockets and straps and god-knows-what. Another was wearing long board shorts with boxer-briefs underneath!!) How do you get any ability to swim properly with all that drag?

Yes, unfortunately there are some who think speedos are obscene. Of course I disagree but I was raised in speedos. I also happen to not begrudge someone who is overweight and wants to wear one. If everyone only allowed the most beautiful people to be seen in public then we would all be stuck at home. I may not enjoy looking at someone but I can just not look. Same for women... If only the most beautiful were allowed out the human race would die out.

If you're an even semi-serious swimmer, Speedo-style suits are no big deal. Most swimmers are pretty fit, but there are few that don't look good in the Speedo, but I'll give them the leeway since they're working on it.

Hi, come to swim in France ! Here, in public pools, speedos (or very short tight boxers) are the only suit we are allowed to wear (for evident hygienic reasons).

Swimming in anything other than a Speedo is just wrong-- unless you're naked. As for beach wear, fashion goes in it's own weird cycles. Ever gee a guy in one of those turn of the century chest-and-upper-leg-covering swim suits, then notice that the material clings and shows every inch of his manhood? Speedos will rule again!

Nice. I either wear my boxer (square cut) or the speedo I bought in a pinch last year. I have baggier trunks that I wear when we take the kids to the community pool.

Pics, of course, in the gallery. ;-)

if all competitors wear the same style, there should be no difference between swimmers although the times would be worse.

I hope speedo's come back. I think al wellendowned men have wanted that. For me boxers are not done for my big package. And what is wrong with a bulge in speedo's?

Here's an article on the history of men's swimwear. Notice how as far back and 1910-1920, when modesty was an issue and men weren't allowed to bare their chests, the suits were still form-fitting and showed bulge.

    Its odd, isn't it?

Bare chests frowned upon but bulges clearly evident. Go figure. Some of those old male swimsuits were astonishingly clingy around the crotch.

    It comes from the Brits?

    No more skimpy Speedos

Britain's most popular theme park has banned Speedos and other brands of skimpy swimming trunks.
