I have to straight out say I want to hate Rick Steves. I'm not sure why, but he brings out the bully in me. I want to beat him up. He has none of the flair of other travel show hosts. Steves is certainly no Michael Palin or Anthony Bourdain. I can't picture him living in a tree hut in Borneo.

Despite trying, I just can't hate him no matter how bland his delivery, functional his clothes, or unchanging his appearance. His father was a piano seller so Steves was one too. He even played the sousaphone in high school. How nerdy is that? The man is, however, rather surprising. He's turned a store front travel agency that didn't book travel into a thriving publishing empire. His famous TV shows were given to PBS for free and so they aired it thus rocketing his business into the black. He's actually not gay either. He's got a wife and two kids. The Steves are big givers to charity and have invested their retirement fund into a homeless shelter. Rick himself is a pothead. He's on the board of NORML, using his website to promote the legalization of marijuana. He even released, astonishingly, a rap song.

How can I hate someone like that? I just can't. Worse, his travel shows are really useful and informative so even if they are dull, they're worth watching. Steves doesn't want people on tour buses or being ugly Americans. He wants people out seeing all the sights, famous and obscure. Most interesting to me is that his beigeness is unflappable. He doesn't lose his temper, never seems to mind plans that don't go right, and he steps from the touristy to the unexplored with the same sang froid. I admire that.

NEVER.. never was there a more inappropriate person than Rick Steves to showcase Europe for public television. His attempts at native languages are dreadful and he screams "hi! I'm an American tourist!"

It's as though he's a throwback to 1950s travelogue newsreels of the most uninformed variety. AND THAT ACCENT!

But with this new information I'll need to rethink my over-all assessment of the man.

    Who'd have guessed?

** come to think of it (with his incessant grin) the man does seem like he's got a buzz on all the time.

    What a bloody hoot!

Well yes in its way (the mysterious pseudo Middle Eastern music as background ) gives that gem it's own Anglo-insular appeal.

Steves has simply Americanized it and removed the overt superiority.

"cheap soap but by the appearance of the people there's little demand for it" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:eek::eek:

    Oh my.

I can't say I love him. Indeed he is beige. His shows are gorgeous in high def. I'm really shocked that he inspires any serious reaction at all . He's Fodor's Paris not Time Out Paris magazine.

    Rick Steve's isn't gay? Huh?

That's a kick in the pants.

I met him in person at some KQED event and believe it or not he wore the same outfit for 3 days. Same clothes at the event and for 2 days after doing the on air pledge drive.

    He really does travel light.

I'm not saying he couldn't be seduced. Even my ACME-quality gaydar goes off when I see him so I remind myself that quite a lot of gay people are married and do have kids.

Same clothes for three days eh? Uh huh :suspect:. I'm sort of disappointed you didn't seduce him though I can appreciate the difference between natural-smelling and rancid. I truly can't imagine him in the throes of passion.

I have no problems with him at all. I don't hate him he does not really bother me at all. I watch the show if nothing else is on and stay sane in the process. But then again I watch Bob Ross as well...Lydias Italy.....Simply Ming....Knit and Crochet today!........Think that is really all.

I can't get over her boy haircut. She is a most singularly unattractive woman. I can't imagine her naked nor a man sexually desiring her. Her food doesn't impress me either. She bothers me more than Nancy Zieman whose audience, I think, must comprise all those plains states prairie types. How can a woman so talented with a sewing machine have such awful taste?

If we are really getting into the PBS bashing... the One Stroke Painting Donna Dewberry takes that cake

    Ghastly. Simply ghastly!

A retreat? This is a spiritual happening? Who are they kidding?

    And believe it or not....
These are the sort of people who knit and use toilet cozies. I just know it.

I think he's kind of dull. But I don't think he can help it.
