This is a riddle I heard can you get it?

"It cannot been seen, cannot be felt, cannot be heard, cannot be smelt, it lies behind stars and under hills and empty holes it fills, it comes first follows after, ends life kills laughter.."

Actually it's...THE DARK. It's a riddle from "The Hobbit" in an exchange between gollum and Bilbo where Bilbo is trying to get Gollum to show him the way out of the cave. I believe the chapter it's from is called "Riddles in the Dark"
