Did you consider war protestors to be "loony tunes"? Code Pink, for example? I was opposed to the invasion of Iraq from the beginning myself. I saw through the phony justifications. I was appalled at the steady drumbeat and painting anyone who dared to question it as "unpatriotic". I was shocked that Congress failed to do its duty, to question the motives, and essentially rolled over and gave the Bush administration carte blanche.I do think there is way too much equivocating going on around this country. "Oh, well, the Left had a bunch of looney tunes around when Dubya was in office." Yes, quite correct. There were a lot of looney lefty protest while Dubya was President, but they were quite rightly treated as loony and part of the fringe. The main difference is that the Tea Party (which is no bigger, and in some cases, smaller than the anti war protesters) is treated as part of the mainstream, and indeed- has taken control of much of the Republican Party. The fact of the matter is- the Democrats in the Bush years were in no way controlled by the fringe left, whereas the Republican Party today has been pulled sharply to the right.
The threats to anyone who dared question the push to war were outrageous. Let's not forget the retribution Cheney's office heaped on Valerie Plame when Joe Wilson accurately questioned the WMD evidence. I don't consider the few brave souls who had the courage to openly protest in the face of all sorts of reprisals from the Bush Administration as "loony tunes" in the least (subjected to all sorts of scrutiny, being put on terrorist watch lists, drug through the halls of Congress, for examples). Quite the contrary, I think they acted exactly as one would hope true patriots would, in keeping with the principles this nation was founded upon - quite unlike the Congress, quite unlike the media. Where might we be today if more people had been willing to take a stand?
