I did not mean any offense to you, and if it came off that way, I'm sorry. My only point was that I've heard this sad lament way too many times to NOT make a comment pondering why we are still there. So many young lives lost- and the politicians who sent us there and keep us there can't even satisfactorily explain why.

No offense taken so no apology needed.

You are spot on with your last sentence about our politicians though and their actions and decisions - and not just relating to military affairs. However, let's save that for separate threads.

I was very saddened to hear about this. I am truly proud of the young men and women who bravely put themselves in harms way every single day. They never even ask for a thank you. These are our children, siblings, spouses and parents. My heart breaks for those who are left behind. I pray for their strength, especially in the coming days and nights.

So please, before you criticize our government, our military or our country, remember that the soldiers who are out there in this every day deserve our support and respect. They are among the bravest people on this earth. And they volunteer for this job. Thanks god that we have bad-asses such as this...and that they're on our side.

Look, I'll admit that this probably wasn't the best forum to air anti war views- but I'll be damned if Ill let someone equate criticism of the government and the military bureaucracy with not being supportive of troops. Have a great day!

Right now there are no doubt libyan government troops dying to defend Gadaffi. Im sure they are fighting hard and dying no less harshly for the fact of who is giving their orders. Are you suggesting we should support him because his troops fight well and bravely and die? Bin laden?

Wow...just wow.

I'll translate so everyone is crystal clear. Out of high regard to our OP, it would be in good taste to kindly refrain from posting any inflammatory thoughts about our government (that being the United States government), our military (or it's leaders), or our country (the United States of America). Our OP has posted this thread in regards to a great loss in his military family. I have not brought politics into this; quite actually I am suggesting that our fellow LPSG members kindly abstain from doing that themselves. Just this once.

I'm sorry, I was not aware of your service to this country. Thank you, and welcome home.

As a former Sergeant First Class, Drill Sergeant, i admire the dedication and tenacity it takes to survive the unbelievably rigorous, torturous training it takes to become one of the elite, a Ranger or a Seal. It is not a job, it is a total existence. They are a breed apart. Idealistically we could wish they weren't needed, but in reality we should be thankful for their dedication.

GUYS, Seriously. Please stop.

Marine, you need to stand down. TomCat, please let it lie.

OP, I know how hard this must be for you, although I was in the Signal corp, I served with an Aviation Unit at Campbell. We flew Chinooks. I've taken plenty of rides on those (only to exercises tho) and it chills me to the bone to think of how easily one of them can be pulled from the sky.

I also mourn for the families left behind. Not only are there 22 members of our most elite fighters gone, there are 22 families devastated by the loss of their son, father, brother, husband or even "just" a lover. Not to mention that these men had friends who care for them as well, the ripple effect is astounding to contemplate.
