I've just listened to the six-thirty network news.
From what they say it appears there's been a significant rise in American right wing militia groups since the election of our new President.
These groups (as everyone undoubtedly knows) are invariably right wing and extremely fearful of anything to do with government. Purportedly (and according to the report I saw) the rise has been fueled to a large degree by the election of a black President.
Short relevant story:
I needed some coolant for my car's radiator the other day and stopped at a service station nearby. The fellow working there (mid-thirities) was intent on engaging me in a conversation about how awful things are since Obama's been elected to office, the bank bail-outs, the cash for clunkers bill, etc . I tried to smile and dismiss myself from engaging him in any way, But he was relentless.
"Yeah!" said he.
"Obama and all those like him will go to hell and you and I will go to heaven (wow had he pegged the wrong guy)
Something's got to be done about this President and it won't be long before something is."
After paying for the radiator coolant I drove away.
I was haunted by the anger embodied in this man's rhetoric and his sense of outrageous resolve to take action. Perhaps he's just a blowhard.
It occurs to me that these types are domestic terrorists. I mean the man was talking at me not to me. Had I said I helped put Obama in office I think he would have gone for my jugular .. no joke.
So then. How serious is this new rise in fear among the disenfranchized? These are organized and trained troops. I'm not talking about only Michigan or Ohio either here. I'm talking about Massachusetts.
Thoughts?
