Poetry is wonderful!

As for romance books - I consider those to be things like Harlequin, Danielle Steele and her ilk. There are fabulous books that contain love stories, that are really good. 'One Day' was really good, but to me had a depth to it. Erotica is a whole other category for me.

I have Mrs Petite :)

I purchased a journal 5-6 years ago and I write things down inside of it that I find especially heart felt and beautiful. I love Tennyson, Bryon, Blake, Frost, Keats and I adhore Marlowe's "the passionate shepard to his love." There are several excerpts from the Bible that I find lovely, mostly from the Song of Solomon.

As I said, I do love to read. I have trouble remembering things so I write a lot of it down. Problem is at the moment I can't seem to find my orange journal. Scraping my thoughts together whilst thinking a thousand things at once has never been my strong suit.

Steele's books are missing something. Maybe they just tend to drone on and on? I do have to admit a love for Nicholas Sparks. I read The Choice last year and I cried, a lot. So I had to read them all.

Hmmm, One Day by ???

Unfortunately, that book was never on the best seller list. It remained obscure and unread. It was selected as one of the best books reviewed by the New York Times for the year 1999 in it's "Notable Books of the Year," but that's not enough of an endorsement to make something a best seller. Oprah on the other hand... It makes me a little sad that more people listen to Oprah, but that's the world we live in.

Sorry, had to look it up. 'One Day' by David Nicholls. Just loved that book.

I think a lot of really good books are overlooked. I didn't know he had a book of poetry called The Cinnamon Peeler :( How interesting.

I dislike Oprah. I'm not a fan of talk shows, I find them dull. There are so many other things I'd rather be wasting my time on.

Ok, I read the reviews on that one, I just wasn't sure if that was the book you were referring to. I'll check it out.

So many good books are!

I agree with you about talk shows. I enjoy The Soup, though, which is a comedy show about dumb things on TV. I love watching Joel McHale make fun of them.

Laidey, I'm going to take a closer look at that book, and One Day, too, LaFemme.

I like a little romance in my books, but I can't imagine picking up a 'pure' romance - e.g. where that is the whole story.

I actually much prefer the historical based and fantasy based novels. I've learned interesting things about history from reading them and honestly it's the best way to get me to pay attention.

I was surprised that I enjoyed this type of book. I really had to have my arm twisted to read Diana Gabaldon's 'Outlander' series because the synopsis did not appeal to me at all, but I thought they were outstanding.

The fantasy based books about lycans, vampires, other shifters, aliens, merpeople etc. are quite fun to me.

I've read quite a few books in this genre. I think they're fun too - sometimes it's nice to have a break from reality!

Well I've got three that I'm going to read since we've been talking :)

I've never heard or seen The Soup. I watched a few clips, but unfortunately I rarely watch tv and I didn't know where the clips came from that they were making fun of  The only tv addiction I have right now is The Walking Dead. I'm a huge horror fan. Just so happens I watch AMC's Halloween movies every year and I saw the previews for The Walking Dead last year and became addicted.

You know, I'm glad Ramsey is such a nice guy who will ignore the total derailing of his topic.

I don't know the shows either, but it keeps me enough in the loop that when other people talk about TV, sometimes I know what they're referring to. A lot of it I just have to figure it out from context!

I haven't seen The Walking Dead - yet!

LOL, poor Ramsey. We are talking about what we love about "romance" in general, even if it isn't specific to "romance" type books, which I believe is where his actual curiosity lies.

I kind of hate tv to be honest. I like books, music and movies. I hate reality tv, it's an embarassment IMO.

If you like Zombies you should check out The Walking Dead, you can see previews on AMC. I'm a huge horror fan.

I think Ramsey is trying to figure out why some women read romance. Which is kind of like, "Dear Men why do you watch football?"

It's just something that some of us enjoy and we each get something different out of it. I don't think, "hmmm, I'm feeling sparky, let me pick up a new romance novel..." I just want to read. Basic romance novels don't really get me hot and bothered. It's kind of like watching Cinderella and feeling frisky... doesn't really happen for me.

Im not a woman, so im sure my opinion isn't really the focus of this thread. But if I may, I agree that novels that aren't entirely based on romance BUT include a hint of it are very good reads.

Im trying to think of the title of one novel in particular and im very disappointed in myself that I don't remember it! It was written by fitzgerald and its based in italy during world war 2. I would tend to believe that its famous since I've heard if it before I read it.

Anyway, I really liked it!

I would read more stories like it, but now it seems the only thing I read these days are stuff like, "organic chemistry" and "how the human mind works"... over the summers I like read some fiction (realistic or not) outside on a swing. Ill have to try some of the novels mentioned in this thread.

Nope ladies I don't mind the derailing  I just wanted to see what the general thought on the books was, and yes Petite, my curiosity does lie with knowing the real thoughts of romance for the ladies as well. Speaking of Laidey's, Hi Laidey :)

Give me the history on Lachlain MacRuairi and Isabella MacDuff, Countess of Buchan and how she is one of the greatest Scottish heroines. Tell me the story of how she stood up for Robert the Bruce and hung in a cage from the tower at Berwick Castle by order of King Edward...then give me a story, say what if... I've actually started reading more non-fiction history to learn the facts.

You've either been reading Barbara Erskine, or you need to!!!!

Personally, I can't stand romance. There are some historical fiction books that are heavy on the romance that I DO like - Diana Gabaldon, and Barbara Erskine's early books.

Other than that I read sci fi, fantasy, occasionally horror, and true stories/autobiographies.

"Wuthering Heights" is a pretty good romance story as is " The butterfly lovers"

I love romance. I read Paranormal Romances. Right now I'm reading Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter. It's like Werewolves, Vampires...etc, etc. But I've been reading them since the first book, sex doesn't come into it until....4th book. There's about 17 books in the series. Sex is a big part of it because....well I'm not gonna get into it, it's a lot of stuff. But they don't go into great detail. And their isn't even sex in every book. Sex isn't the main focus. It's just what happens when adults get together, but occasionally you gotta have sex to save the town :p. If you wanna get into this series or read it..PM cause, I love discussing books :).

Well I certainly give it a try - anything's better than studying, right? ;)

To return the favour, given your preferences, there are a couple of Urban Fantasy series with a strong romance element I think you may really like if you haven't read them already. The first is Stacia Kane's Downside Ghosts series (starting with Unholy Ghosts). These are dark and gritty and have a strong horror element but the thread of romance woven through is incredibly well done. Probably my favourite series at the moment.

The second is Karen Marie Moning's 'Fever' series (starting with Darkfever). These can be quite dark too but the romance is hot. ;)
