I have been thinking about this for a while. But first, I would be interested in what others have to say.

Love is nothing more than lust dressed up with emotion.
It's a way to get the species to procreate.
    It's natures bet each way.
Either way there is going to be sex and the possibility of offspring happening.

    Unless you're gay.....

Oh I believe in romantic love. I've been smitten by it far too many times.

    Love fact.

    Romance fact.

Romantic love possible but probably over estimated in count by those people described by dustybutt's (dustydo's) posts. :0)

Recessive Genetic anomalies are present in every gene pool of every species.
They don't inhibit a species ability to procreate unless they are apart of a closed system.
A individuals sexuality is not as important as the mean total of heterosexual individuals of reproductive age within a species.

If the "gay gene" hasn't yet been identified, how do we know if it's dominant or recessive or even exists at all?

    Very simple Jason_Els,
If it was a dominant gene there would be more gay than straight babies born and the species would be doomed to die out due to the lack of offspring being born.

Yet human society, being what it is, has only recently allowed gays to not marry people of the opposite sex and then only in some cultures. Throughout history, our societies have forced gay people to marry and procreate except in some very limited and special circumstances. I'm not certain we can actually gauge what the supposed gene is solely on the basis of unfettered personal preference.

I believe in romantic love. I am in romantic love (And have been in the past as well).

I further believe that one can only experience it if one is ready and available for the experience.

I find that people who have not experienced it or think "love sucks" are not emotionally at a place where they can fully engage in the experience. LIke an other opportunity, if you are not prepared when love arrives, you will not benefit from its presence in your life.

Dunno that I can agree with that, DoubleD. I lust for the one I love but I also love him in ways that have nothing to do with my lust for him.

    Lust is just one emotion.

Try adding respect, devotion, adoration, care, fostering etc etc and may be these will add up to something that we don't have to "believe" in.

I don't think it exists at all. I think we all have the potentiality for every type of sexual expression.

But that is another thread.

Why the fascination with labels? Why the need to try pigeonholing such a wide range of physical and emotional interactions into an either/or dichotomy?

Some people click. When they do, they'll click on certain aspects and to varying degrees, and their simpatico will persist for some amount of time...sometimes for a long while, other times not.

Well, technically, I don't have to believe in it as I am experiencing it.

My "belief" in love is based on my firsthand experiences of it--not upon any ivory tower ideals. My thoughts of this are like a faith based in tangible facts. So, "believe" is probably the wrong word for me to use here.

I should say, I have firsthand proof of the existence of love (romantic or otherwise).

I agree that the continuum is not an either/or dichotomy. I look at the range/continuum as akin to a salad-there are MANY ingredients you can put into a salad to make it work for people and everyone's opinions of which ingredients are most necessary (beyond the base of a green, leafy vegetable) are going to widely vary.
