Being gay and very male identified men's songs about women don't connect very well. Similarly, neither do women's songs about men. This is an example of the exclusion of gay people from our culture and, I suspect, a significant source of confusion for gay youth. Hearing these songs as a teenager, and not feeling much, led me to the concusion that I was incapable of romantic love.

I agree. I think that I feel that way about love songs in general. They aren't very genuine compared to real life. Plus, I haven't had too many guys that treated me right enough to warrant a love song. Maybe a disappointed song. Hehehe.

There are love songs that aren't gender specific like "Evergreen" by Barbra Streisand. A man could sing easily sing it. Laura Branigan and Michael Bolton both recorded "How am I supposed to live without you". Leon Russell's "A Song for You" has been recorded by both men and women. And "Your song" by Elton John doesn't mention a man or a woman.

And since you mentioned Judy Collins, when I was in Borders shortly before Christmas, I saw that she had recorded a CD, "Judy Collins Sings Lennon & McCartney." It was one of the featured CD's, so I listened to it and thought it was kind of different, so I bought it. I have a bad habit of buying something for myself when I shop for other people.:biggrin1: What's interesting is that she sings the songs the way the Beatles did, and doesn't change any lyrics. For example, she sings "And I love her" the way it was written, and does not change it to "And I love him". And on other songs she doesn't change she to he.

Yeah, there are gender-neutral songs and some female vocalists don't change pronouns, especially in recent years. However, the gender neutral songs lack, in my opinion, a certain quality of immediacy. And, FEW male vocalist leave the pronouns alone.

At any rate, that's my observation.

I used to be a big fan of Elton John and I think he's often under rated when it comes to naming artists who wrote love songs/emotionally charged songs, some of his songs are fantastic and full of short phrases that really ring true, despite him not writing the lyrics he's still the one who decides which of the songs presented to him he'll sing.

Now I'm going to listen to

Sacrifice
Nikita
We All Fall In Love Sometimes
Daniel
Sorry Seems To Be the Hardest Word
Chameleon
Blues For My Baby and Me
Someone Saved My Life Tonight
I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues

i agree with SP. with the two i named, John just fills the songs with emotion. With "Can You Feel The Love Tonight", he sings with such genuinine emotion and created such a beautiful melody, that Rice's somewhat awkward lyrics in the song hardly even matter.

and with Your Song, you just need to hear it. simple, yet truly effective.

There are a few singers who never seem to be mentioned in threads on romantic songs, Stevie Wonder for instance, yet listen to I Never Dreamed You'd Leave in Summer, it's so simple yet heartwrenching, and his other songs Knocks Me Off My Feet, Summer Soft, Ordinary Pain, You and I, and Heaven is 10 Zillion Light Years Away are all worth repeated listenings.

Jersey Girl

I got no time for the corner boys
Down in the street making all that noise
Or the girls out on the avenue
`cause tonight i wanna be with you
Tonight i'm gonna take that ride
Across the river to the jersey side
Take my baby to the carnival
And i'll take her on all the rides

`cause down the shore everything's all right
You and your baby on a saturday night
You know all my dreams come true
When i'm walking down the street with you

Sha la la la la la la
Sha la la la la la la la la
Sha la la la la la la
Sha la la la i'm in love with a jersey girl

You know she thrills me with all her charms
When i'm wrapped up in my baby's arms
My little girl gives me everything
I know that some day she'll wear my ring
So don't bother me man i ain't got no time
I'm on my way to see that girl of mine
`cause nothing matters in this whole wide world
When you're in love with a jersey girl

Sha la la la...

I see you on the street and you look so tired
I know that job you got leaves you so uninspired
When i come by to take you out to eat
You're lyin' all dressed up on the bed baby fast asleep
Go in the bathroom and put your makeup on
We're gonna take that little brat of yours and drop her off at your mom's
I know a place where the dancing's free
Now baby won't you come with me
`cause down the shore everything's all right
You and your baby on a saturday night
Nothing matters in this whole wide world
When you're in love with a jersey girl

"Crazy for You" by Madonna is the one song that will always make me think of my first love.

Others:
"Into the Night" by Benny Mardones
"Seeing You Again" by Dan Fogelberg (okay, almost any of his songs)
"Your Man" by Josh Turner
"How Deep is Your Love" by Bee Gees

Too many more...I'd be digging through my music collection all night.

Lots, I think many of us are soppy sods at heart, off the top of my head:
I'll Wear it Proudly - Elvis Costello
Drove All Night - Roy Orbison
Kathy's Song - Simon and Garfunkel
Tightrope - Stone Roses
Tomorrow is a Long Time - Bob Dylan
Endlessly - Muse

Don't know if it is too dark to be a romantic song:
I Want You - Elvis Costello

Feet in the air
Oh, don't look back
Don't look behind you
Wreckless drivin' on
Dirty back road
