When Romney appointed this guy I figured he would not last. One thing you can say about Grenell he is not a quiet Repb gay go along and shut up and that is what got him in trouble with the Evangelical Right Nutbags. Romney is smart enough to know that he can't win unless he can get the middle of the road voters, To bad the Repb are held captive by the nutbags the US could benefit from a functioning government.
Grenell did had some press right after Romney announced him as the foreign policy advisor, I guess he made some tweets that were offensive to women and then deleted them. There's no way in hell I will vote for Romney, but I will say that I mostly believe him when he says he doesn't care if someone on his campaign is gay or straight. However, for him not to expect the furious reaction from the homophobic wing of the R party is like closing your eyes and hoping the sky disappears...it ain't gonna happen. The mere presence of an out gay man who supports marriage equality on his campaign staff infuriated these nitwits, who proved their muscle within the R nomination process by first pitching a fit about Grenell's presence, then criticizing Romney for caving by firing Grenell. And it was most definitely that he was fired, all this bullshit about "oh, we asked him to stay" is employment legal-ese and wiggle room. On Friday Romney appeared on Fox "news" and tried to smooth it all over, see here:
Romney Speaks Out on Grenell Resignation: 'We Select People Not Based Upon Sexual Preference' - VIDEO| News | Towleroad
and even threw a bone to the fundies with what's got to be the intentional use of the phrase "sexual preference". He must be wishing the whole thing never happened. I personally don't understand gay Rs either but I know there are some gay men and lesbians who consistently vote for the GOP. After this, though, those Log Cabin talking points about how being gay is just one issue and it's really separate from all the other policy positions, etc etc, you've got to figure that at least a few of them woke up and saw this for what it was. You can be experienced and good at what you do, but if you are gay and out you will be silenced, marginalized and neutered from the political debate. It should be funny watching the remaining gay Rs try to spin their way out of this.
