Libertarians like Ron Paul are a far cry from conservatives; the only reason they run as republicans is that the two parties (Republicrats and Demopublicans) have tied up the entire ballot access and electoral process to favor themselves.

Politicians run under the (R) or the (D) because that's the only way they're going to get the funds they're looking for to run a campaign come election time. The fact that we do have politicians who are registered as Independents in government shows it can be done without excessively pandering to the interests firmly entrenched in either of the parties they claim to be against. But those are very few and very far between.

If the ultimate goal was to create a viable third party, the ground work & lobbying would have been put in place ages ago. There would already be prominent faces within that party that their affiliates and followers can look up to. Alas, most of these so-called "independents" are just opportunists looking to cash in on the anger and disappointment of others, and are never organized enough to make any real differences whatsoever. That's why Ron Paul runs under the (R). And if he gets their nomination, you can expect that he'll provide all those beneficiaries that shower him with funds on the right their due "lip service", which will be much different than what he's tooting now. Just ask the John McCain of 2000 and the McCain of 2008 about that.

With all this Ron Paul speculation, I wonder whatever happened to the Lyndon LaRouche acolytes?
Oh he and his little fascists are still very much around, in California at least. I nearly came to fisticuffs with one panhandling for him in front of the Trader Joe's in San Diego last year. Still pushing that people with AIDS should have been "removed from society and quarantined" bullshit.

I fought hard against Prop 64 back in the day, put on the ballot by Lyndy and his "Prevent AIDS Now Initiative Committee", PANIC for short. Cute acronym, huh? Saw way too many good people suffer and die - while time, money and energy was wasted fighting crap like that - to put up with his ignorance and impertinence. I forgot to ask the little shit if LL was still accusing the Queen of England of being the biggest heroin dealer in the world.

But we digress . . .

Well, Liz and Phil have had to find other ways to keep the Sterling rolling in since they had the Royal Budget hacked back a bit of in the 1990s when she was forced to start paying income tax. I understand Liz has personally dealt all of the first bags of China White to her servants and neighbors in and around Balmoral Castle, hiding the bags in little tea cozies. Not only has her home business increased her personal popularity among the Scots, it has substantially quieted down the neighborhood. Although recent reports form "the yellow press" have noted several uprisings among the grouse living on the moors at nearby Corgaff.

I had to mention LL because I hadn't heard anyone doing his ranting and raving for a while. He will soon die.

Hey VinylBoy,
I'm as skeptical as politicians as the next guy (as Sting said, 'they all look like game show hosts to me'), but Dr. Paul may be one of the few principled people in the House. He's consistently voted against pay and perk increases, and I pretty sure he gives some of his pay back to the Treasury. Too bad he isn't telegenic, and not a great public speaker; but a guy that's delivered 3,000 babies can't be all bad.

That's such terrible logic, and I hate this argument above all other pro-Paul arguments. Delivering babies has nothing to do with politics. Just because he used to be an OB/GYN, that doesn't affect his policies one bit.

Hey Zeuhl,
It's terrible logic, because it isn't logic; it's sentiment.
You ever notice such a overwhelming majority of legislators are lawyers? The 'Legalpunks' (as Ringer called them), write and pass the laws, are the officers of the courts, and the judges.
I guess my (haphazardly expressed) thought was, that the prominence of a legislator whose profession has nothing to do with the perpetuation of the legal/political/big-government complex (hey man, did I just coin a new phrase?!) is refreshing to a lot of folks, and maybe a bit of a point of pride in his supporters.

AND,
I'd be pretty sure his professional background affects his policies, just as all our backgrounds shape our political philosophies to one extent or another.
For example, I've noticed that most people who have actually run productive business ventures tend to be conservative or--once they devote real thought to their politics--libertarian.
On the other hand, many who depend on patronage or government subsidies for their livelihood tend to be liberal or progressive in their beliefs.
No coincidence, in my opinion.

The problems we have now are not due to smaller government, the exact opposite. Under the guise of regulation, there are plenty of anti-competitive, anti-consumer federal laws out there that are only in place to benefit big business and pre-empt state consumer protection laws.

Bull pucky. The lack of regulations has caused the Wall Street Greed. Fewer regulations, more people trying to be bleed the economy for their benefit.
