If you look at the ruler the 1 to 2 inch mark is a lot longer than the 7 to 8 inch mark. The ruler must be hanging down a lot for that kind of scale distortion.
It doesn't need to hang down a lot, try it for yourself:
Let's say his pics were taken with the camera 1' from the ruler.
Stick a ruler against your chest, parallel to the floor, 1' down from your eyes. Put a finger at the 8" mark, then angle the ruler down without moving your finger, until your finger looks like it's at the 9" mark. Check the angle :smile:

I counted the pixels for the first inch, and put the yellow line where the 8" mark would be if every inch were that same number of pixels, after subtracting a few pixels to account for the natural perspective (even with the ruler parallel to the camera, the "farthest" inches would look slightly shorter).
