An actor? He basically plays the same character over and over. An open secret in Hollywood is that there really are no actors out there. All you do is find the actor who most closely resembles the character, and then cast the actor in that role. Hollywood is silly.
That's been the cliché since they first started making motion pictures commercially around 1910; it was firmly in place by the early 1920s. New York is filled with "actors" and Hollywood's full of "Movie Stars".
But give a NY actor the chance, and he'd break an ankle jumping at a chance to make a movie, and Broadway has been a showcase for Movie Stars since forever (well, at least since the 1940s); when sound was added in the late 20s and Movie Stars suddenly needed "voices", stages in London and NY were pillaged for talent.
The fact is that there is a certain charisma that's required for film work that isn't necessarily required for stage work just like there's a stamina required for stage work that certainly isn't required for film. Ego is a requirement for success in either endeavor.
As to RR: he's almost as pretty as Brad Pitt, almost as funny as Dane Cook and has an insane amount of charisma. His image is fey and metro/queerish, but that probably has little to do with who he is five minutes after getting out of bed before all that charisma kicks in with a cup of coffee.
