    Saddam sentenced to death

This is hardly a surprise of course. There is a lengthy (potentially open ended) automatic appeals process and a further verdict to come so he may end up a double swinger.

Never mind that Bush/Blair will no doubt try to milk it for electoral/political advantage and that this may go down well in the west. But with rival groups voicing their views on the streets and violence already could it kick the ongoing insurgence into overdrive?

Conspiracists will no doubt say the verdict (and the timing of it's announcement) were engineered for this purpose.

The timing is a bit curious, eh?

Amazing that we've killed at least 100 times the number that Saddam is being hanged for, just to get to him.

Good riddance. Now, should be interesting who his replacement is.

It is also interesting that he wasn't tried for any of his big crimes. ie. the ones which would implicate western governments, who were his accomplices.

Unreal...disappointed because it's not the "force of unity" they were hoping for. What are they thinking? Encouraging families to pack picnic lunches and bring the kids to watch him hang?.... Seriously, I don't know why they're surprised and disappointed. It's not like Bush/Blair had the UN or the rest of the world backing them on their decision to invade or continue the war. Many are happy to see Saddam get his come uppance, but others are equally unhappy at the measures taken to get to this point.

If you look out of the window of a passing train,
As I've always said, there would of been a better way to solve this conflict with using little arms as possible.
In fact, in theory, we should of been able to kill 200 times less than our current casualty figure, to get Saddam, but thats my opinon.

I also have stronger views on the conflict, but I won't go into any detail here, as it would be far too political and inappropiate.

Lets just hope this appeal and the killing if there is one, is over and done quickly so that we can get the new democratic leader in place and restoring peace to iraq.
(My facts maybe a little out of date, please do correct me if I am wrong.)

Good riddance I say! It's just too bad he wasn't killed in Desert Storm, then maybe some of the current fighting could have been avoided. Who knows.

And you have some more appropriate legal venue in mind? He should be tried by the losers, perhaps?

    Don't be naive.

This "trial" was as much of a foregone conclusion as Goering's. Or Tojo's. Or Milosevic's, assuming he had lived through it.

You could make a pretty good case for hanging Arthur Harris, William Westmoreland and Donald Rumsfeld, had they worked for the losing side instead of the winning side.

One of the perks of winning a war is that the winners get to put the loser's leaders on trial, despite the fact that leaders on both sides did equally heinous acts.

Given that it could be argued that the biggest losers in the 'war' where the Iraqi people perhaps that's not a million miles from what's happened.

    1) Why 200 in particular? And how could this be achieved, whatever the figure, if the one you gave was only suggestive? Can you expand? (I'm interested.)

    2) Why not? Can hardly be far too political and inappropriate here.

That's what happens when you lose a war. You don't get to take down your biggest allies and support system over the past 2 1/2 decades.
