Being the sappy cow I am, there's LOADS of sad songs that get to me. But this song is just "deeply" sad. I only put a couple verses, but you get the idea, I think, why its so sad. Having spent most of my life affected by alcoholism in some form or another, I can really feel the loneliness in this song.

"Whiskey Lullaby"
Brad Paisley and Alison Krauss

She put him out like the burnin' end of a midnight cigarette,
She broke his heart, he spent his whole life tryin' to forget-
We watched him drink his pain away a little at a time,
But he never could get drunk enough to get her off his mind....
Until the night...

he put that bottle to his head and pulled the trigger,
And finally drank away her memory
Life is short but this time it was bigger
Than the strength he had to get up off his knees
We found him with his face down in the pillow,
With a note that said I'll love her till I die...
And when we buried him beneath the willow
The angels sang a whiskey lullaby

The rumours flew, nobody knew how much she blamed herself
For years and years she tried to hide the whiskey on her breath
She finally drank her pain away a little at a time
But she never could get drunk enough to get him off her mind
Until the night...........

 :sad2:

(and my gosh, I cant believe how many of these songs are in my music collection!!!)

I like everyone's lists! Here's a few that came to mind:

For No One-The Beatles
In My Life-The Beatles
If You See Her Say Hello-Bob Dylan
Hear You Me-Jimmy Eat World
Already Over Me-The Rolling Stones
The Trapeze Swinger-Iron & Wine
Lover You Should've Come Over-Jeff Buckley
Hurt-The Johnny Cash Version (it's eerily self-prophetic)
No Woman, No Cry-Bob Marley (partly because the lyrics are so nostalgic, but mostly because of the story behind the song: Marley wrote the song himself, but gave the credit to a friend of his who owned a financially burdened soup kitchen back in Jamaica, and with the commision his friend recieved from the record label he was able to keep his kitchen open)
Simple Man-Lynyrd Skynyrd

sdg475, Have you seen/heard this version of For No One by Emmy Lou Harris?
YouTube - Emmylou Harris - For No One

I've never heard that version before, thanks for sharing! It's quite different and a good new spin on the song, but I prefer the Beatles version. I think the dry, emotionless delivery in the original is what makes it moving.

...Where Oh where Can my bay be - Can't Remember(not pearljam!)...

Great topic! The song you're thinking of is "Last Kiss." You're probably thinking of the version by J. Frank Wilson and the Cavaliers, whose 1964 cover version went to #2 in the charts. However, it was written and originally recorded by Wayne Cochran & the C.C. Riders in 1962. It's based on actual events.

I love The Sundays cover of "Wild Horses." The Indigo Girls also have a
live cover version featuring Bande de Soleil and Michelle Malone. It's
quite good, but it doesn't compare to Harriet Wheeler's unique vocal
interpretation. Wheeler's voice just soars.

I want to hear "A Minor Incident" by Badly Drawn Boy. I'll have to look
it up.

I love Rufus Wainwrights cover of "Hallelujah." Unfortunately, I find
the Leonard Cohen original to be hard to listen to. (Something about his
delivery grates on me.) Jeff Buckley also has a highly regarded cover
of Hallelujah. In fact, Wainwright said that if he had heard Buckley's
cover before doing his own, he wouldn't have tried to cover it.

These songs are sad but I enjoy them:
These songs move me to tears and "put me in a funk," as earllogjam put
it, so I avoid them, unless that's how I need to feel at the time:
  • "This Woman's Work" by Kate Bush. (As far as I can tell, it's about what an expectant father goes through while his wife goes through a difficult childbirth.)
  • "Mad World" from the Donnie Darko soundtrack, covered by Gary Jules. (Jules somehow managed to find an extraordingary lament hiding inside the Tears for Fears pop song.)
"This Woman's Work"

Pray God you can cope.
I stand outside this woman's work,
This woman's world.
Ooh, it's hard on the man,
Now his part is over.
Now starts the craft of the father.

I know you have a little life in you yet.
I know you have a lot of strength left.
I know you have a little life in you yet.
I know you have a lot of strength left.

I should be crying, but I just can't let it show.
I should be hoping, but I can't stop thinking

Of all the things I should've said,
That I never said.
All the things we should've done,
That we never did.
All the things I should've given,
But I didn't.

Oh, darling, make it go,
Make it go away.

Give me these moments back.
Give them back to me.
Give me that little kiss.
Give me your hand.

(I know you have a little life in you yet.
I know you have a lot of strength left.
I know you have a little life in you yet.
I know you have a lot of strength left.)

I should be crying, but I just can't let it show.
I should be hoping, but I can't stop thinking

Of all the things we should've said,
That were never said.
All the things we should've done,
That we never did.
All the things that you needed from me.
All the things that you wanted for me.
All the things that I should've given,
But I didn't.

Oh, darling, make it go away.
Just make it go away now.

"Mad World"

All around me are familiar faces
Worn out places, worn out faces
Bright and early for their daily races
Going nowhere, going nowhere
And their tears are filling up their glasses
No expression, no expression
Hide my head I want to drown my sorrow
No tomorrow, no tomorrow

And I find it kind of funny
I find it kind of sad
The dreams in which I'm dying
Are the best I've ever had
I find it hard to tell you
I find it hard to take
When people run in circles
It's a very, very
Mad World
Mad World

Children waiting for the day they feel good
Happy Birthday, Happy Birthday
Made to feel the way that every child should
Sit and listen, sit and listen
Went to school and I was very nervous
No one knew me, no one knew me
Hello teacher tell me what's my lesson
Look right through me, look right through me

And I find it kind of funny
I find it kind of sad
The dreams in which I'm dying
Are the best I've ever had
I find it hard to tell you
I find it hard to take
When people run in circles
It's a very, very
Mad World
Mad World
Enlarging your world
Mad World
